I have two issues; - Copying a symlink/alias to a FAT drive crashes and hangs the entire system. (Can anyone say HARD REBOOT?) - Adobe Illustrator and InDesign is screwed to the point where its unusable. - Spotlight hangs when indexing a massive amount of data, such as a newly plugged in USB drive already full of 500gb porn.
In spite of this, I refuse to downgrade because I love the new finder (much more stable), coverflow browsing is awesome and rather quite useful, and stacks have actually proven (at least for me,) to be a space-saver, even though I didn't buy it at first.
All in all, there are some major upgrades to be done, but I'm not downgrading any time soon.
Some things are quite obvious...
Then again, if you (or anyone else for that matter,) distrusts MS that much, just stop using their OS, or deny Windows access to the internet alltogether?
Actually, my windows machine isn't allowed to contact the outside.
The only thing I use it for, are apps that doesn't work on my Mac - and those are rare... so I guess this thread isn't for me. But back in the day when I did use windows, I actually did monitor the windows update function quite closely, and I never found it to send anything it didn't need to. Besides, with the amount of heat that MS would get if someone did in fact scan the transfers and found something suspicious, I think they are careful. Atleast nowadays when they have some serious competition.
However, I'm paranoid enough to never underestimate the power of a huge company such as Microsoft. One has to make a deal with the devil in order to become that big, right? =)
They'd still need to get into your hardware/software firewall and yadda yadda yadda... I, for one, have one hardware firewall from d-link, and another firewall made of iptables in linux - it won't let anything into my network. Soooo... a backdoor named NSA wouldn't do much for about 99% of the population, who gets atleast 1 firewall from their ISP etc. Besides, if the NSA wanted your information, they'd be at your door already.
I care a great deal where the money goes, and uptil now, I was under the impression that it went to the artists. If I was wrong for trusting their promises, then that's that.
There was a guy in Sweden a few years back who downloaded an album from the internet, liked it, and sent $10 in an envelope to the artist directly. Noble for sure, but he ended up being arrested for copyright infringement.
Even if you try to do the right thing, you can get screwed over. If it turns out that that is what AllOfMp3 is doing, then I'll sign off of it.
Regardless of AOMP3's methods, I still think music is too bleedin' expensive, especially when the record companies don't give that much back to the one who actually creates the music from the getgo.
I WAS under the impression that it did - coz they said so.
And no, I don't take everything I hear/read/see seriously, but making such a bold statement on a company website that would seem to get tons of attention, didn't seem plausible to me. Obviously, there is a dispute about this going on at the moment however.
My point was that AllOfMp3 did what the porn industry did when the internet became every man's best friend: drop the prices, concentrate on the online crowd (everyone).
We don't hear the Porn industry bitching about piracy, do we?
No thats not what I said. I meant that WE as consumers aren't willing to put up the money they are asking - they need to take the lesser of two evils (their way of looking at it).
As an AllOfMp3 customer, I have to agree with what most people say; You buy more music if its cheap.
A year ago, I hadn't spent a dime on music for over 5 years. I spend about $50/month now. Why? Incentive. More music for your money. The same amount of music would end up at (roughly calculated,) $520 to buy the actual CDs. They see it as they are LOSING $520/month in sales on me alone, when they don't realize that it is BECAUSE OF the low prices that I'm spending anything AT ALL - because I couldn't afford it otherwise.
It's a "something is better than nothing" mentality that they should be focusing on, and not the "make as much as humanly possible" kind of thing.
Me, being one who loves his freedom, can't do anything but hate this shit. Besides, porn exists everywhere - why? Because people want it. If its not available on the internet, or it gets difficult to find on the internet, we'll just go back to buying magazines and videos from the adult store - like we used to do. The internet just made it easier.
I blame it all on religion. There's always this underlying thing with sex and porn being "bad". Quit being such assholes and let the ones who wanna jerk off to porn do that, and quit forcing your conservative moral onto the ones who don't share it. This isn't about protecting anyone, it's about control.
And for cryin' out loud, if you don't want your kids jerking off to porn, rip the TP cable out. Could I make it anymore simple?
This is redicilous. Isn't half the joy of the internet that there are no boundaries and no borders? People from all over the world united. Well, its a nice thought anyway *cof* china *cof*.
I was recently in the same kind of situation, only the company I work for, had a Google Page rank of 0 when I joined the team.
I spent almost 6 months 24/7 working on the new design, only to hear that there was not enough time to launch it and that we wouldn't sell one more license (of the software we sell,) if we kept the old site.
After 2 months of explaining and writing memo's, I finally got them to fix all information that was to go up, and whadda ya know? The traffic went up by 330% in a month! PageRank increased to 5. The sales have also gone up, however I don't know how much as it isn't my department.
This just proves that some people shouldn't make decisions just because they want to - they should listen to those that know best.
In the Kinderbullshit page's case, they should listen to Google - who actually know what they're doing, in comparison to their icky webmaster anyways.
I completely agree. I have run my debian system for 5 years, and I know every nook and cranny of it. There's no way I could switch to anything without starting over again - well, almost starting over.
Though one has to realized, that the vast majority of linux distributions are often small and specialized to one specific use. The distributions worthy of running on the desktop, CAN be counted on one hand - atleast if you ask me.
Debian, Slackware, SuSe... uhm, are there any others?:)
Feels a bit offtopic all of a sudden, but I'll grant a response..
So you're saying that what is preached today and the word of god are two different things? Sounds great to me. There's just one problem: It's heresy. Going against the actual word of god and preaching something else IS to go against the word of god. Period.
So why are we not selling our daughters into slavery like the bible preaches (old testament)?
Because we pick and chose. And that's fine, but don't, in the next breath, tell me that religion does NOT preach violence, when it does - we just chose to not abide by it.
What does religion have to do with anything? I thought killing people was wrong either way?
Besides, christianity (and all religious believes based the "the bible",) preaches violence and terror. Hell, "the bible" even says we should stone to death disobedient children. I wouldn't feel too good about enforcing that one on todays society.
In either case, religious believes are irrelevant in this matter.

I used to run gnu/linux on my workstation, but I switched to Mac about a year ago, and I'm very happy I did.
However, my debian server has been the most trustworthy of all my servers, running 6 years now only rebooting for kernel upgrades.
Actually, my windows machine isn't allowed to contact the outside. The only thing I use it for, are apps that doesn't work on my Mac - and those are rare... so I guess this thread isn't for me. Yea I got it, but I was in a bad mood. Long day and all. sry.
I care a great deal where the money goes, and uptil now, I was under the impression that it went to the artists. If I was wrong for trusting their promises, then that's that. Sweden already has that and always have had that.
Though as long as you can claim you don't have one, you don't have to pay it.

Uhm... I do? ;)
My 300mhz gateway and firewall is still very useful

There should be a .mp3 TLD. That would make it sooooo much easier to find illegal downloads, right?
oh wait...
True, there isn't one for the Intel platform yet - didn't know that's what he meant. ;)
I have a PPC G5 myself, so I'm content with mac-native software
Uuuhh won't be out for years?
It is out, numbnuts. I'm using it right now for cryin' out loud. Microsoft even openly promotes MS Office for Mac.
In fact; the Office:Mac is further advanced than Office for Windows.
I despise Microsoft and their way of doing things, but this they did right.
I was recently in the same kind of situation, only the company I work for, had a Google Page rank of 0 when I joined the team.

Geez... when are people gonna realize that software using digital signatures sucks? Grab Secured eMail instead and live life easier ;)

Know thy system!

JUST what I was about to say! ;>
Hell, I can't live without M2. And I'm forced to use Outlook at work... gah, life blows sometimes

Buddhism isn't based on the little stupid thing we call "the bible".
