  1. Security fears... on Security Fears Over Google Accelerator · · Score: 1

Everytime Google releases something new (and usually cool) people start complaining about security problems. Look what happened with Gmail and Google maps. For cryin' out loud, there's a security problem everytime I turn on my stupid computer (even if it is behind two firewalls). People should really be more concerned with Microsoft's products than Google's. I'm not saying we don't need to ask questions about security but we don't need to put on our tinfoil hats either.

What's kind of funny is that I didn't even realize /. had ads. I don't really ever look at the top of websites anymore because that is where most of them put ads.

// Here's how you create your own personal adblock (but it only works on things at the top of the screen): Create a lesion (how you do this is your own problem) in the lower bank of the calcarine fissure in both your occipital lobes. This leaves you with a superior quadrandanopsia. (In other words, when you fixates on a point, you cannot see things in the upper visual fields of either eye).

Thanks for the cultural heads-up. After all, since I've lived most of my life in America, being American is about all I know how to do.

I'd also like to add that the title Professor is a term of respect; however, it still gives you no scientific credibility here in the U.S.

  4. Re:I'd hate to be a paper referee after this. on Randomly Generated Paper Accepted to Conference · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'd have to say that this WMSCI is definately not run by a collection of academians. If you look at the conference acceptance letter text, the "General Chair" of the conference (or acceptance committee) signs his name Prof. Nagib Callaos. Now if this was a legitimate conference, the "General Chair" would at least have a PhD (not that that implies competence or legitimacy, per se but it is a good start). In any case, as the chair of a real academic conference you would not sign your name "Prof. whatever." "Prof." is a completely useless title. There are many people who can legitimately sign their name as "Prof. someone" but not nearly as many who can say "Dr. someone, PhD."

So really this is not a case of academians not understanding something but rather it is a case of pseudo-academians not caring.

  5. Re:openness, competition on Congress Ponders Opening up iTunes DRM · · Score: 1

While it is nice that eMusic sells non-DRM'ed MP3s (I have downloaded a number from them myself), their catalog is severely lacking. They do not have the support of many of the labels, which limits their music to more obscure (and often inferior, but not always) music. If this is what you like, then their service is great; however, the quality of many of their songs is often poor. A few of the songs I got from eMusic sounded like someone recorded the songs with a handheld tape recorder and then turned them into MP3s from that.

So, iTMS songs are DRM'ed but the selection of music (the range and amount) available and the quality of that music is superior to any other online music store (not including places like Amazon that sell CDs of course).

I know this is offtopic but I just wanted to second the motion that Ligers exist. This liger used reside at Hogle Zoo (in SLC) before she died. Anyway, she is a bit of a cult classic animal (if there is such a thing) around here, which is why the term "liger" made it into Napolean Dynamite. Just my useless factoid for the day.

"the Bush administration is alienating canada like no other administration in US history" And you think the Canadian government is not alienating the Bush administration? The way Canada is going, I'm glad if there is an alienation. From my experience, many Canadians in western Canada are highly disenthralled with their political leadership but really can't do much because after all, why would anyone of importance not live in the East? There are so many people in Quebec and Ontario compared with western Canada that the West cannot do much politically. Canada's government is only on the facade representative. Their government is a farce of democracy (just look at how their last prime minister was "elected"). It is like having New York City and Boston have all the say in how our country is run (they are great places but definately not representive of the whole nation). You may not like Pres. Bush or agree with his political views but I think you'd be lying to yourself if you said that our country would be better under people like Kerry and Kennedy (then we'd be almost like Canada, including the really high taxes).
As far as politicians go, Pres. Bush is quite moderate. Of course he has his strong conservative points but overall he is about as moderate as any president we've had recently.

About the Canada passport situation: My wife and I were visiting her family in Canada. Let's just say that you should never forget your birth certificates. We had quite the time getting back into the States. "How do we know you are Americans?" and "You'll have to come into the office." After they roughed us up a little they put us on their "dangerous watch-list" and let us come back into the U.S. That incident made us want to get passports just to make the whole process easier. We wouldn't have had much hassle if we had had our birth certificates, but even then it can be a bit of a process. Passports are much easier but requiring them seems a little extreme. They're just as easy to forge as birth certificates.

First off, nice comment - well-written and enjoyable to read.

However, to be nitpicky: You could also disqualify people who think digital watches are cool, as well as all objectivists.

Let's see, so according to your reasoning (ok, so taking a logical leap) an analog Mac would be even better than all the digital ones around? Like Charles Babbage's computer?

Anyway, death of the aristocracy is the way of the world. Those French revolutionaries did wonders to the ruling elite in the 18th century, or at least Madame la Guillotine did. Now these lower-priced made-for-the-masses Macs are threatening to do the same thing! Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity are inevitable.

Mac elitists cannot escape the floods of revolution. Of course, there will always be the facade of intellectual elitism for you to hide behind. You can hole yourself in those marbled halls of academia and scorn the poor unenlightened and unwashed masses who use Macs because they think they are cool instead of seeing the real inner and aesthetic beauty - nay, the subtle pulchritude - of the Mac. You will continue to use and enjoy Macs because they seem to imply status and class; everyone else, those wretched and huddled masses, will simply use Macs because they simply work.

Your aristocracy is over - face it. This is the end of the Big Brother of Mac elitism.
