Yeah, this only seams to work with lamertian surfaces in flat-lit enviroments.
That's not the biggest problem though, i am a 3d-artist, and it's a pain to try to make a tiling texture map out of a picture containing more than three channels, due to stupid limitations in all 2d applications.
It's often more efficient to first make the color texture tile, then create a heightmap from that data. I guess that's why they are targetting scientific applications such as archeology, that requires more accuracy, and also employs less skilled 3d-artists (no offense).
I am an graphic artist (3d/2d) and a Wacom smaller than A5 is quite useless for serious production.
Also, i don't see when i would require a portable workstation (for that is what this monster is trying to be). Better to keep the field- and office-work seperate. I'd rather have my 24'' monitor too (even though the laptop's panel has quite nice resolution)
The article mentions that too little video memory can be a bottleneck. But wouldn't squeezing 2 gigs of memory on a graphics card simply move the limiting bottlenecks elsewhere?
I am an game-developing 3d-artist, and our biggest problem right now is the lack of ability to render complex per-pixel shaders (particulary on the PS3). But this is only a short-term problem, and what would we do with the ability to create more complex shaders? Fake the appearance of the benefits of Ray-tracing (more complex scenes and more realistic surfaces) of course!
On the other hand, the film industry could be a good place to look for the future technology of computer games. And as it is right now, it's preferable to avoid the slowness of raytracing and fake the effects instead, even when making big blockbuster movies.
The ISS experiences friction from the atmosphere and requires regular "pushes" from spacecraft to maintain orbit. Even if you placed the paper airplane next to ISS, it would eventually de-orbit.
...But is working more hours actually better (for both the project and you as a person)? I work for a large computer game developer - in an industry know for insane chrunches and late hours. Wich makes a policy of ours, forced by the bosses, quite interesting:
Avoid overtime.
Ofcourse, things has to be done, but working more is not a good solution. Cutting down the workload and hiring more people is. But how do we hire more skilled developers when all experienced programmers and artists are already employed by other companies? Interestingly, people seams to be attracted towards a work situation with less flex and more structure when the come from companies with looser schedules...
...And Finland (despite resistance from the joined swedish and finnish forces) got pwned. It doesn't make the defensive maneuvers less heroic though...

...then print Tux on that silly windows key please?
Red button?
I guess you refer to "the clitoris".

Or just viral marketing for apple store?
Is it just me, but doesn't 4% seam like a ridiciously high figure when reflecting upon the problems that still exists down on US soil?
Yeah. Where are my s-foils?!
I live in the 21:st century, you insensitive clod!
That's more about the stream processor's ability to render complex shaders efficiently, than it is about the video memory.
The article mentions that too little video memory can be a bottleneck. But wouldn't squeezing 2 gigs of memory on a graphics card simply move the limiting bottlenecks elsewhere?
Indeed. I am a senior 3d-artist working in the game industry, and my salary for a game is nowhere near 100k
Who is this "traffic James" that we have to avoid?

It's just a tiny bit thinner than a Dell m1330

Boobies and people fsucking = The source of life. Racism and violence = A source of death.
If the sponge caugth fire, the microbes are probably dead by now. Right?
...what on earth where they thinking in the first place?
Change them to fluorescent lamps. Dismiss the dryer. Shut of the computer in the basement and help save the frickin world.

Isn't blank votes an option in the US? Best way to say "i disagree with both sides, but i still want to serve democracy"
Seams like we already have our global sunshade: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_dimming
...do they run Windows?

No giant enemy crabs?
