The movie industry did basically the same thing to live theater. it still lives as a niche product for those who want it, but it is not nearly as pervasive as it was.

then, get them to provide grant money for serious hardware, like 128 dual athlonMP or dual xeons with 4 gigs ram each and myrinet and a big ol' SAN,

get them to agree to let you use this cluster for whatever research goals your department chooses to target, without Microsoft's prior approval

The real problem here is the idea of "corporate personhood" which extends all the civil rights meant for people (including buying congressmen, senators, presidents and supreme court justices) to corporations.
individual people, and and not-for-profit groups can not compete with the cash generated by a large corporation.
there is one easy solution to this (unfortunately, it's not easy:).
make all elections 100% publicly funded (I believe that england does this and each candidate can only spend something like 10,000 pounds), ban any political advertizing by any non candidate which mentions, depicts or hints where a particlar candidate or party stands on an issue.
a. clearly defines my tasks
b. clearly defines my deadlines
c. doesn't change priorities every freakin day
d. leaves me the hell alone to get my work done and doesn't come by every three freakin minutes asking for a status update
e. listens to me when I tell him it can't, or shouldn't be done
f. doesn't demand to know every single thing I know about what I am doing, but only to know the things that truly matter for him.
g. one that trusts me to come to him if I need help.

the fact that in the last 3 months, 3 new PDA's have come out the primary feature of which is an integrated keyboard (yopy, zaurus and new sony)
and one of the top accessories for other PDAs is a portable keyboard should be a hint and a half.
voice recognition is useless in a cube farm environment. handwriting sucks (it is slow and painful).
