    The movie industry did basically the same thing to live theater. it still lives as a niche product for those who want it, but it is not nearly as pervasive as it was.

    just because you have managed to earn a living doing something in the past, that is no guarantee of being able to do so in the future.

    technology changes the rules, and some industries suffer, but other industries prosper.

    the movie industry needs to realize that they are not "entitled" to make money from traditional movies, they must provide us a reason to do pay them for the experience.

    if they made movies that were worth the extra $5 to see on a big screen vs. my tv, then maybe I they wouldn't have this problem.

    At family get togethers, he would gather the kids and play "Wild Thing" while
    the kids sang along.

    His and My Sister's favorite movie to watch together was "The Princess Bride"

    He was a Geek. Just last week he setup DSL and 802.11b networking in his house.

    He travelled 3 days a week, and to compensate for being away so much he devoted
    all of his remaining time to his family.

    every friday was date night with my sister.
    every saturday was spent with the kids at a museum, aquarium, zoo or nature
    park.

    My Sister always dreamed of marrying Prince Charming and being a stay-at-home
    mommy.

    until one year ago today, all her dreams had come true.

    if someone, or several someones, without knowledge of said patent, come up with the same solution to the same problem, then it clearly fails the non-obvious test, and as such is not a valid patent.

    seems like these patents would get thrown out on that basis.

    using the same techniques on a true 65k color display, you could probably get within 11% of true color.

    does that make weasel words and misrepresentations OK?

    this is bullshit marketing crap and they should be punished for it.

    dont buy this product. e-mail them and tell them you won't buy any of their products because you can't trust them.

    show them that honesty is important in business.

    the apollo orbital stack was on the order of 150,000 lbs to Moon Transfer Orbit, this thing can get 15,000 lbs to Geosynchronus Transfer Orbit, 1/10th the weight and an easier orbit.

    the space shuttle drags 65,000 pounds of cargo, plus 6 people and the whole orbiter thing to LEO, still MUCH more than Atlas-5 which is just a new generation commo sattelite launcher.

    actually, on normal targets passive detecion range is much greater, but less precise. you know where he is, but not quite precisely where.

    however, today's submarines are sooooo quiet, that they make less noise then the ocean background.

    active is great for very high precision location at relatively short ranges.

    if you are banging out active pings, your nice quiet enemy, just outside your active detection range knows where you are and can fairly easily maneuver around you.

    the counter tactic to this is a team of subs, some pinging and some passive, with the passive guys in the gaps trying to catch the sneaky bastards....

    the democratic party should be ashamed to have a legislator who would sponsor this kind of crap in their ranks.

    intel pxa250 - 400 MHz, 300 mWatts, StrongArm + mac, etc..

    power consumption/features roughly comparable, so which gives more work/cycle?

    considering that I saw this report being hyped up on MSNBC before I read about it on slashdot, I question his (and their) objectivity, I have never seen them hype any review of any PDA before.

    also, he was bitching about the size relative to a palm m505, who's primary selling point is it's small size.

    I would also note that he is comparing design/implementation rev 1.0 of Zaurus to rev 6 palms and rev 5 WinCE boxes. (remember the clamshell wince boxes? remember the original palm pilot?)

    how many 3rd party palm apps were there when rev 1 of palm or wince were released? ZERO. give the apps and platform time to mature.

    is everyone so damn intent on replacing the keyboard.

    rule # 1: if it works, don't fuck with it.

    the fact that in the last 3 months, 3 new PDA's have come out the primary feature of which is an integrated keyboard (yopy, zaurus and new sony)

    and one of the top accessories for other PDAs is a portable keyboard should be a hint and a half.

    voice recognition is useless in a cube farm environment. handwriting sucks (it is slow and painful).

    free (forever, not free for this year) copies of the software,

    get them to agree to let you use this cluster for whatever research goals your department chooses to target, without Microsoft's prior approval

    then..
    decide to target beowulf related things,
    use partition magic and repartition the drives, install linux/beowulf in the new partitions and start up your shiny new, Microsoft Funded Linux Beowulf Cluster(tm)!!

    every now and then, reboot into windows, verify that it is still useless, and reboot back into linux. send them monthly reports detailing the uselessness of windows and get on with your shiny happy life with your shiny happy linux/beowulf cluster...

    The real problem here is the idea of "corporate personhood" which extends all the civil rights meant for people (including buying congressmen, senators, presidents and supreme court justices) to corporations.

    individual people, and and not-for-profit groups can not compete with the cash generated by a large corporation.

    there is one easy solution to this (unfortunately, it's not easy:).

    make all elections 100% publicly funded (I believe that england does this and each candidate can only spend something like 10,000 pounds), ban any political advertizing by any non candidate which mentions, depicts or hints where a particlar candidate or party stands on an issue.
