Patents promote inventors releasing their inventions to the public.
eg. Someone researches a successful a cure for AIDS in their basement. w/o the protection provided by patent law the inventor of the cure has people come into his home, be charged a fee, take the cure and leave. He would make damn sure that the cure was not smuggled out of his home, in case of reverse engineering.... WITH protection provided by patent law, the inventor submits his patent and sells hundreds of cures to Pharmacies all over the world, he is no longer worried that someone will take his cure formula and use it for their own ends.
Q: 1) X wouldn't start w/o installing the nvidia binary? 2) Or things wern't as pretty w/o installing the nvidia binary?
If 1 then yeah, that is pretty disappointing If 2 then no, thats completely normal for EVERYONE (including windows users... they have install drivers too).
I have seen 4 ATI cards bomb out since 2000, all of them needed replacing. I have NEVER seen an nVidia card bomb out. From my limited point of view, nVidia sells higher quality cards.
Two weeks ago, I had to replace my ATI 1600 pro with a nVidia 7600 GS. They are roughly equivalent cards. In windowsxp running Oblivion, I notice a drop in performance with my new 7600gs. In Ubuntu Linux I notice a glxgears score 10 times higher! Now I understand that this improvement is because of the better drivers, but its all the same to me from an end-user point of view.
So, even though gaming was better with the ATI, I am happy with my nVidia because I expect it to have a lifespan much greater than the ATI, and my Linux experience (I use Compiz w/ Ubuntu) is dramatically improved.
I like the word *ruling* It makes Canada sound like a tribal nation lead by warlords.
All Hail King Harper, may his rule last 1000 generations!
P.S. "governing party" would be a more correct term, and "minority governing party" even better than that.
Why do you care how many PS3s get sold? Did you have a bad DRM experience or something?
But seriously... if you dont like PS3, fine, dont buy one. But why do you take pleasure in it not selling well? Are you that angry at those whom are able to afford one?
I guess I mean to say will Sony provide an openGL implementation that allows the utilization for their different GPU/CPUs
the opengl is provided by the hardware distributor... correct?
We are in agreement that correlation does not equal causation. Just because you learn a thing does not mean that you practice what you learn. I am not blaming violence on video games, I blame violence on the people who do violence.
However, an already violently intended person (VIP for this discussion) can learn to desensitize themselves via video games. If a VIP has never experienced video games yet picks up a gun and shoots someone in the head, he might think "OMG there is so much blood, and he fell to the ground with such a sickening thud!" and might be shocked and temporarily stop the violence. Yet when a VIP plays video games he may think "YES HEADSHOT!" after shooting someone in the head.
Creatures use games to learn things... thats the point of games. I again agree that you are learning shared collectives and camaraderie when playing Multiplayer games, but you are also learning to respond to violence when you practice violence in a violent game.
There is a correlation between video games and violence.
You see GAMES are a way of learning. When you play a violent video game you are learning to be violent. Counterstrike allows your brain to learn "this isn't a person, this is a think to kill." Counterstrike doesn't teach you how to aim, it just teaches you that 'its ok to pull the trigger.'
However, just because you learn something doesn't mean you are going to use that learning. When it comes right down to it, the murderer is a skick f#ck, and sick f#cks are drawn to violent video games.
Gun tragedies are not caused by violent video games, but to say there is no correlation is wrong.
You know, this all depends on your definition of what a "Web App" is. Lets not forget that all client side executed code is run from within the client's RAM, just because you are using a browser doesn't mean that the code is magically executed "somewhere on the net."
Now....
Lets take Google's apps for example, These applications are 1: HTML/CSS to describe what a user sees 2: Javascript to allow client-end functionality (AJAX on client side) 3: Server back end (respond to AJAX)
Soo... why is this a Web App? Lets pretend I didn't get the HTML/CSS/Javascript from Google, lets pretend I got these files from my harddrive... am I now running a desktop app, or am I still running a web-app because I am using a browser?
Lets take things a bit further now. Instead of Google sending HTML/CSS/Javascript, they send you a compiled binary, or a java JAR file. Because I am receiving these files from the web, am I now running a web-app?
Or perhaps you define a web-app based on the server/client interaction.
So, if you base your definition of web-app upon "it runs in a browser," then the answer to the question posed "Can web apps ever truely replace desktop apps." The answer is "Yes, When browsers become feature rich enough"
If your definition is based on downloading content from the web the answer is "Yes, when security is in place to trust these downloaded binaries"
If your definition is based on the client/server interaction the answer is "Yes, when the correct web services are available"
Thanks EvanED. At least someone gets the idea.
The world aint perfect, you gotta deal with what you got.

According to the wording of this article, Harper is your RULER, and MASTER. Now Bow down!
P.S. Please not Stephan Dion... the guy is a weeny.

Does the linux openGL implementation have to be rewritten, or just the applications rewritten?
It's already tight against the wall, how much more backed up do you linux geeks demand?!?
I think he means via synaptic.
Ahahahahaha ohhh tears in the eyes, that was good:)
+1 funny mods!
