I'm a Ruby on Rails Web Developer and have been working with XHTML and HTML for a few years. When I first read about XHTML and understood it, I was like "awesome" they have all of the concepts down correctly, this is the solution to the web problem. But it's not.
First off. The current web works. Almost all sites that you want to be on render decently well in IE, Safari, Opera, and Firefox. It's usable and being used.
Now there's room for improvement, heck I've cursed while trying to use CSS over and over. Looks perfect in one browsers, hideous in another. And then it'll just not behave as my references say it will. gah. But it does work eventually just with frustration.
Anyhow back to XHTML vs HTML.
XHTML is the proper thoughts and theory, but it just doesn't make sense in practice in many ways. Whereas HTML works great in practice. This is why the browsers aren't supporting XHTML 2.
Lastly there's no reason to make pages break if their formatting is a little off. That's dumb, the Internet is so much about freedom of information including the freedom to post it. Of course if they don't know what they are doing they should lean towards stuff like Google pages. But I've made my dumb mistakes and I'm glad my pages don't just break because I forgot to close my last div tag.
I believe we should add it but not require it. Due to the difficulties in defining and enforcing such a rule.
In general though as the web becomes more sophisticated we can more easily block things and this problem should take care of itself. My assumption is those running these sites do so to make a profit. And children do not buy things online, thus they are not a desirable audience. So my assumption from this is that this problem will deal with itself over time with or without a top level domain.
And in truth, so what if little jimmy saw boobies. I accidentally stumbled across stuff when I was 12 or so (and had no interest) I closed the screen and moved on. If little jimmy walks in on grandma in the shower however...he will be scarred for life. And if they are looking for it...they will find it..in one way shape or form or another.
Well Google is Evil in that they abuse the use of Beta, for instance gmail should not still be in beta, basically google keeps things in beta to keep themselves from having embrassments

We are on it, as well as sueing the energy providers we at the RIAA have big plans to sue computer makers, software makers, gas companies (how could you listen to illegal songs in the cold) as well as everyone that makes anything, because we have found it all ties in to music one way or the other. Now this may seem crazy but we have an army of lawyers large enough to take over England, and we paid off every American judge, so things so go smoothly...but you didn't hear this from me.
women try to stir up trouble to much...men only act when they actually believe they will obtain there goal...while women just like to raise a fuss, men think like engineers which goes along with our current defination of smarts. while women are better at organization and such. The fact is women and men are different, no amount of political correctness can ever change that....understand stupid women?! rephrased...men math..women clean, cook, secetary (misspelling is fun).

If your using trillian or gaim sure they are decent clients but because of their natural (being universal clients) they lack advanced and useful features and have issues with things like file transfers. And aim's client is simpyl evil, msn's is intursive and rude, and yahoo is (actually I don't use yahoo's cause noone uses it) anyways google can add a lot, just like it did to email and search.

for the last time HELLO there is a google instant messenger already. they brought it with picasa....slow people slow. It's sad...I particapate in a google based forum with 10k members and yet we talk about google more on slashdot...I mean things like this...why the hell is this posted...is this important tech news? no...whatever slashdot (I think they are being blackmailed by google or something
Exactly...I can't believe this nature thing has been going on so long...the individuals have tried to elimante it with little backup from the government. But they've found sucess....major cities have almost entirely elinated nature in the area and many animals have become extinct and endangered. But we need your help. Please kill everything you see but man...thank you for your continued support

ya this sort of change scares me...it will screw me thousands up...I have tons of devices with auto-set to change for daylight savings...and tons of software will have to be patched....it'd be one thing is they were getting rid of daylight savings...but to simply alter it is stupid...and a scary trend starting for congress
actually no....I was doing some programming in dos when I was 9 and that was actually hard..current day programming is a piece of cake for stuff like calculators
I don't know how many slashdotters actually have contact with people at age 9 but it's not very young...now if you show me a 3 year old that could pass the test then I'd be impressed...

ya but see I can go get any famous book work legally in the library and have it for a couple of weeks, but any famous movie type thing, I can go get for 5 bucks for a couple of days. So why can I borrow books for free but not movies? Books and movies have the same purpose (entertainment, self-help, documentaty to explain something, etc. etc.)

I think you've forgotten about paint, movie maker, frontpage, etc.
I know, I know, microsoft's stuff is crap but it still has software in this field. There is a third and it's name is microsoft. And there are many companies that focus on one thing, such as pinaccle and premiere. Or GIMP (I think that's right) and Photoshop.
Anyways I see this merger as something that will be really awesome, or something that will really suck, just depends on a lot of stuff

heh reminds me, the easiest way to get into people's email accounts is to ask them their "secret question". I know this from an article I read not from experience....
This has...crap written all over it. They editing was horrid, acting sucked, the cg crap was good if they would simply add textures. The editing felt like I was switching between movies. The song didn't fit. The actors were ugly in unugly roles. It's crap. Sorry to be so harsh, but looks to me like they should go for cg ship battles (add textures) that's the only thing the have going for them. And the lightsaber fights? wtf have they heard of coregrahpy? Or like emotion in the fight? or emotion in acting?! Episode 1 and 2 were good, not great or nearly as good as they should've been. This isn't even good for a "fan-film" they need to use some of that prop budget for acting lessons, and editing classes.
