It is? Sun's UltraSPARC workstations are still decent and have good graphics (3DLabs-based, I believe). They are still popular in CAD and government circles. Sun's Opteron workstations, especially the dual CPU one, look like they can hold their own quite well (dual 250 Opterons, Ultra320 SCSI, NVIDIA Quadro, and Solaris 10 or Linux). I don't know much about IBM POWER workstations, but they're still being sold. It seems only HP and SGI completely fell out of the market.
I really do wonder if there will be a backlash against Windows in the CAD/CAM realm. Sure, people loved how cheap Windows appeared to be, but when it comes to managing large projects, Windows kinda sucks (from an admin/programmer/proj.mgr./total-lock-in POV). I can imagine the enthusiasm expressed by a sys admin to have to manage Oracle-based product lifecycle systems under Windows. I hope there will be a massive migration of tools back to UNIX/Linux over the next few years.
Credit card processing is expensive no matter how you slice it. That's why so many mom-n-pop restaurants and shops don't accept them.
Pay Pal's processing is actaully relatively cheap for a very low-volume on-line business, but it ceases to be cost effective as volume increases. However, I'm sure Apple can work around that.

If more home-owners knew that just killing the bastard would be the simple solution, rather than try to make nice-nice, then either more criminals would be dead or, hopefully, deterred.
Combine this with the adblock extension, and there is no way in hell IE can compete anymore.
I agree with everything you said, execpt that I've started allowing ads to load now that I have broadband. The reason: ultimately these websites are ad-supported, so the ads should at least be displayed regardless of whether I click on them. For dial-up, however, ad blocking is a god-send.
To their credit, with a couple of days, State Farm had put the money back,...
Yes, this is to their credit, but I can imagine plenty of companies who will just hold on to the money. For example, my old cell phone company kept billing me for months after cancellation--I dread what would have happened if they got the money directly (I think this is actually part of their business model). I'm sure getting the money back from a hospital or nursing home would be like squeezing blood out of a rock. Add lawyer consultation and exhaustion from arguing, and automatic-debit just isn't worth it.
No, he's saying he was dumb enough to do anything automatic-debit. Giving any company access to a checking account for anything but deposits is just insanely stupid. It is not convenient--it is downright stupid. Why? Because they make mistakes. Where is your money? They have it. How to get it back? Sue us. Suddenly $0.37 for a stamp doesn't look so bad.
The connect / disconnect beeps for EVERY little statement drives me nuts from across the room.
It's fashionable to beep. Nextel wants exactly the attention you describe. Would their phones get noticed if they weren't annoying as hell? It's the same as instant messaging with the boop-beep and beep-boop with every damn message. When I was in college, I could have thrown a chair at the instant messengers. And they didn't have a care in the world.
What he writes is consistent within his belief system, and it shows a pretty well-thought-out theological basis for his opinions. He is also consistent in saying that he is an advocate of free speech, and he is consistent in saying that sinners are still worthy of love and compassion. None of this is homophobia or zealotry, because of the lack of knee-jerk thoughtless bantering.
Now, for your sake, I will say that I don't agree with most of his opinions, but I do respect the fact that he has spent more time thinking about the basis for his beliefs than 99% of all people combined. While I wouldn't vote for him if he ran for President, I can still find it within myself to read his work.
He's homophobic, militaristic, overly religious and a zealot - basically he is the Bush of sci-fi authors.
How so? There is plenty of theological discussion in his books, often from the point of view of someone who isn't Mormon or even religious. I generally get the impression through his work that he is pretty level-headed with respect to religion, and his characters are all extremely human with flaws and virtues intact. If Bush were to write Ender's Game, Ender would have tried to convert the Buggers before destroying them.
You mean Code Red isn't a sports drink for advanced athletes? That I shouldn't be on a dozen prescription drugs? That my children aren't better taught by a talking book? That school loans aren't the source of happiness for all successful students? That cross-over SUVs aren't station wagons? That my computer doesn't make the Internet go faster?...I don't know the meaning of my life anymore...:(
No, the original film based on the musical was not too much like the book...
Watching the actors talk about the movie on the DVD, the original movie was based on the book with the author present during filming. They didn't mention a musical. In fact, the whole movie was made to market a candy bar (Wonka Bar), but, ironically, the candy bar flopped while the movie hit it big.
Having seen only a promotional poster with Depp on it, on one hand I am skeptical, but on the other hand I wish them the best from an art appreciation point of view. The problem is that this whole Slashdot discussion is going to be tainted by us all growing up with Gene Wilder, who was a perfect Wonka to begin with, and Depp will have an uphill battle to win us over (even if he is also an absolutely amazing Wonka).
With the IBM/Lesovo deal, Sun aggressively marketing JDS in Asia, this HP PC, and with China's different opinions about intellectual property, I wonder what Microsoft is thinking about all this. Perhaps HP is saying that people in China would rather pay for better hardware and get Windows, um, elsewhere.
The whole 'UNIX workstation' market is gone.

most stores in western europe accept credit cards..
Most in the US do, also, but, especially in rural areas, it is common for small businesses to just not accept them.

Shhhh....they don't want the public to know about their Sun Solar Panel and Sun Ray perpetual energy machine...

You should ask the admin why he allowed common users to install software in the first place. I bet he doesn't even know how to prevent that.
I recommend not storing any of your personal files on computers he manages, because they'll probably be e-mailed to the world by a worm, soon.

Lies sell, since most people are stupid and believe whatever they are told.
Obviously true, since Best Buy obviously exists.
Digital-quality!
Yeah, my 1-bit digital speaker setup is frikkin awesome! R&B music has never sounded better!

The best part of CR is getting the magazine and finding all the tested models have already been discontinued!
Mmmmmmm...huge mutant donkey balls...
Maybe Willie and/or Charlie still have something to teach all of us.
My Willie teaches me something new every day!
Not that it necessarily means anything...
Given that 115% of Hollywood voted for Kerry...
Johnny Depp or Christopher Walken
For some reason, I would have had no problem with Walken in the role, but I see Depp and his Parisian-American attitude and wonder.
Are the aliens going to be led by Xenu?
No, but there is a quite catchy advertisement for Amway in the previews.
