    Explain this then. If I have cmd open under NT, and you have xterm open under X, how can you "type mkdir new" faster then me?

    So then your personal hatred for NT aside, what prevents a NT user from keeping cmd.exe running much like your xterm while keeping X up?

    I can also keep cmd.exe (or several instances of) running all day long. Wouldn't making a directory for me from it be as fast as you doing it from your xterm? D'oh? Wrong again?

    Oh yes, on a DX2-66 I have no doubt Windows 3.1 runs faster then 98. Then again I'm sure Windows 1.0 runs faster then 3.1 on it. The more advanced the application, the more resources it will require. If things remained the same we'd all be stuck on commodore 64 systems.

    Don't like Windows NT? Fine, but don't go making half assed statements that don't hold a grain of truth. Otherwise you're spreading the very same "FUD" that linux activists fight oh-so-hard to defeat.

    Um and if you're under X, how long does it take you to bring up a xterm? I'd say the same amount of time it takes me to bring up cmd.exe

    As for the other side of the spectrum, spending _all_ my time in console mode, yes this can be done in NT, why anyone would want to is beyond my understanding unless you're one of those
    neo-cli-4-ever freaks.

    Could you tell me what setting you can "dork up" during the "install?" Seperate installation of mmc doesn't exist, it's a bundled product much like control panel.

    So the original poster made a half assed comment without a grain of truth and that was supposed to be a great "hint" at something else?

    Now you hurridly switch the subject instead of apologizing for your Linux comrade's idiotic remark, fine. I've never seen the Linux community take responsibility for the crap they sling anyway.

    So what basic administrating tasks can one not accomplish in NT command line? Add users? Mount drives? View/kill processes?

    Can't "script" ? Last time I checked we had perl, batch scripts, as well as ports of various shells for shell scripting (i.e. korn shell) Cygnus toolkit and MKS toolkits provide around some 200+ tools.

    It might not have the same amount of tools that are available for Linux but it's hardly forgotten or a joke.

    Which *GASP* you can also do from the command line in Windows 9x/NT/2000

    Or are you also one of those high tech wiz types that don't believe there's a command line in NT?

    Anything anti-microsoft that is spewed from advokiddies is always regarded as well informed truth, never can a Linux advocate be accused of mud slinging ;)

    Uh whooptie, does this mean that any future Linux installs should be judged by the 1.x kernel tree? Is Redhat 6 the same as Redhat 4? If we took a Redhat 4 box today, how many upgrades would it need to be secure and bug free? There is no need to "hope" for stability, just find a Win2K beta tester and ask them what their experiences have been. The majority will tell you the same thing. On supported hardware with microsoft certified drivers Win2K is rock solid.

    Actually if you speak to the beta testers, the majority will tell you that W2K is indeed the coolest thing since sliced bread. Of course every Linux advocate will claim that beta testers are all really microsoft employees who's past times include eating babies and planning to take over the world.

    "Stupid enough to buy w2k" ? Um have you tried windows 2000? Wouldn't it make sense to buy it if it worked for that person? Or is every Windows user now "stupid" as Linux is obviously a better solution in every way imaginable? Hold that banner up high smartin and chant "Linux is all about choice, the only choice we let you have is Linux"

    Actually, OpenGL AFAIK was never shipped as part of the drivers included on the OS cds. OpenGL drivers have always been the job of the IHV to provide. Nothing new here. As for directx7, well I can tell you that the newest beta drivers from nvidia work quite nicely for me (Final release cd)

    Umm you should remind yourself that you're reffering to Windows 9x, not NT/2000. With the addition of directx7 2000 now being as good a gaming platform as 9x while being a Multi-user OS and quite stable.

    It's dissapointing to see people looking for an easy chunk of change to make via this loophole. Typical slashdot "Let's rip off Microsoft" response aside I think this is a pretty good deal for the average consumer. It is because of deals like this (I think Compuserve also has something similar?) that lower income families are able to afford a first time low class computer. Please don't "screw" MSN over this, it'll just end up hurting a lot of future possible computer users if MSN closes this deal offering.

    It's interesting to see that half of these awards apply to Linux, or open source unixes only. Getting an award for a closed sourrce BeOS or Windows developer is definately a lot harder then it is for a Linux one (Which fits in virtually every category) Very dissapointing indeed. If Slashdot wishes to be percieved as an "unbiased news source" this is definately not the way to go.

    Okay, someone explain this to me. The DVD association is angry at the folks who broke their encryption (and created a tool that would make dvd copying a reality to break loose)..and Slashdot is endorsing the cracking of dvd's protection schemes? So piracy is something that should be championed? Either I'm not seeing something here, or piracy has become a "good thing (tm)" Quite frankly I don't understand any of this. Of course it's easy to stand up for the little guy fighting the big corporation, but is dvd piracy really something that should be encouraged?

    Actually there is a NT services for Unix downloadable pack which also includes a telnet server. (For NT4) As for shareware daemons..hell, there are quite a few shareware, freeware, commercialware, etc. There is also several ssh ports for NT AFAIK. Obviously NT is not the answer for you, however it's the answer for someone out there, hence the commercial packages.
