My Question would be, do the geeks of the world have any responsibility to teach the non-geeks abit about how computers work? If so, at what point does that responsibility end? Yes, there are people who just use their computer for very basic stuff, and really don't have the desire (Or need?) to learn that there is anything beyond the programs that are bundled with windows. Then there are the people who know they can do more, or realize that that Windows/IE are bad/not secure, but really have know idea where to start looking for the information. Then, as stated in several posts here, there are the people that really don't know that there's anything else out there. Those that claim to be OSS-proponents should be happy to spread the word, and help educate people about their options. Word-of-mouth IS the best advertisment for any product, more so when its the ONLY form of advertisement for the product.

I think Lucas is more like Dave Matthews, realeasing the same thing over and over.

Actually, the network (CBS), was _trying_ to find a way not to pay him. The lawyers basically told them, nope, he didn't cheat, it's your fault, ya gotta pay him. The next season, CBS did double the number of patterns on the board, from 6 to 12, to try to prevent that from happening again. Sadly, Larson lost all of the money in a bad real estate investment deal (I guess he finally did hit that whammy), and died of cancer nearly broke. I did see rumors of a film based on the story, with Bill Murray as Michael Larson.

Does the patent cover the same process with, say, one step added? It could be worked out the same way a copyright on music is worked out (Think "Pressure" by queen and "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice). If a certain amout of the code is the same, then yes, it violates the copy right. I does seem to be an unpopular sentiment around here, but certain things tha I create, yes, I want them protetced. People create for 1 of 2 reasons. 1: They create for the sake of creating, and letting people use and enjoy the creations (Your local bar band, Open source Software) or 2: To make money (Brittney Spears, Microsoft). Its important to keep in mind the which on the creator falls into .

  13. But People Gladly Pay Service Charges on WA Bans Gift-Card Expirations, Fees · · Score: 1

I worked for Hoyts Cinemas for uite a while in the late 90's. Just before Christmas one year, the company had decided to start charging a $1 surcharge on every $15 book of gift certificates. They didn't expire, but the customers had to pay the surcharge up front. I was amazed at how many people didn't even bat an eye at the fee, but I was more suprised at how many people complained about it, but still payed it!!! Related, but different: At the same time, the powers that be decided to sell discounted tickets in books of five for $25, plus the dollar service fee. How ever, we would only roll those out for a bout a month at a time, and they would only be good for a certain time period, ussually months away (ie books that were sold in December would be good for febuary and march). Apperently, some one in the home office didn't do their research, as we found out latter that any type of coupon that is paid for cannot have any time resrtictions in the state of New Hampshire (I'm in Maine).
