I agree. My original myth box died after 5 years due to HD failure. While setting that up took a good week or so the first time, with one major update consuming 1 day, when I built the new box I installed Mythbuntu and was running 0.21 in hours with only a few minor config issues to mess with that we fixed relatively easily.
I've never used XvMD, but I can say that I've used VDPAU to play back 1080p with great results. I haven't tried any of the 0.21 VDPAU enabled myth builds yet (I use mplayer as the video player), but VDPAU is working great. I assume the myth native player utilizing it will be fine. It takes an incredible load off the processor when playing hd content.
I really hope so. But I don't trust the banks to eventually pay it all back. They're certainly off to a very slow start. And I have no faith AIG will be able to pay its share back in the next century let alone the next 10 years. AIG should have been left to burn....
You really think its actually going to cost what they say?? The unfunded part I speak of is the costs they ignored, the future savings they planned for that will be unrealized, and the general fact that there's nothing I see in any of the bills that will actually make health care cost less, which they also assume to be true.
The unfunded liabilities of universal health care will make Medicare part D look like pocket change.
I know the US is spending too much money, but for stories like this it pisses me off because the US government couldn't be farther from funding the things I'd like to see it fund or not fund for that matter.
I wonder if thats not part of the problem. Currently everything Washington does is spelled out in US/THEM terms. NASA is not well defined in those terms, so it gets left in the cold while those in power fund only the things that are ideologically theirs....
Which, by the way, is a horseshit way to run a country....
Um, if _I_ were President, I would immediately put a stop to the Treasury handing out any more TARP money and fully fund NASA's budget.
There that wasn't so hard.
And yes, it is what I would really do if I were President. I believe completely that the TARP program was one of the worst things my Government has ever done.
Well NASA sure as heck isn't raking in the funding under Obama either. And don't go saying he'll be giving more funding to have NASA do Earth Science either because of his stance on Global Warming, because he isn't doing that either.
All I see right now is liberal special interest groups getting waaaayyyy more money than NASA is even asking for showered on them and NASA continuing to get the shaft from this administration just like they did from the last one.
I am sick of hearing how science can now breathe a sigh of relief because Obama's in the White House. They won't be doing anything at all unless they get some real funding pretty soon.
I'd have to agree. I think what we are seeing is the full taking of power of the Banking-Content complex with banks and entertainment industries calling almost all the shots in government.
Look, banks are getting Hundreds of Billions of dollars thrown at them and NASA can't even make a case of increasing funding by single billions of dollars.
The Military will eventually be cut back dramatically, the leading edge of this is the new weapons systems, which is whats putting the aerospace and defense contractors in a bind.
I know I've brought up before, but theres a hell of a lot of engineers and scientists being thrown out of the M-I complex right now, but the politicians are stressing 'science and engineering' education. My response to this is what the fuck are they doing this for? Specifically the Banking-Content complex has absolutely NO value for science and engineering (I count the quants as complete sellouts so they don't count and lord knows that the content industry has NO ONE who understands technology at all).
Look, banks are getting Hundreds of Billions of dollars thrown at them and NASA can't even make a case of increasing funding by single billions of dollars.

We are in an age where those who handle the money and sell sight and sound think they're the only game in town. The Industrial part of the complex is completely gone.
This logic just pisses me off right now. NASA is asking for an extra $3 billion per year to build a new viable replacement to the space shuttle. When you contrast the other things the gov't is wastefully spending its money on its ridiculous.
You could fund NASA the extra $3 billion for
10 years instead of bailing out GM and Chrysler
or
Nearly 57 years instead of bailing out f-ing AIG
THAT is government waste. Spending for NASA has always provided benefits for science and impacted our daily lives. Its a worthy endeavor and something necessary to IMHO spur on the advancement of the human race.
Politicians make a great noise about "science and engineering" being important to this country. Lets see them back up those words. If NASA's new rockets die on the vine the politicians will have shown their true beliefs on this issue. If this nation fails to renew its capability for manned spaceflight, in my opinion, we will also distinctly show that to America, science and engineering don't matter anymore. Why not become a doctor or lawyer, oh wait, the doctors are going to get screwed by health care reform, so why not just become a lawyer if you want to be successful. This country no longer rewards those that build and design great things anymore, the money game and the ever growing soulless corporations get quite literally TRILLIONS of dollars in support from the government, and one of the biggest science and engineering problems we are trying to solve right now gets told "sorry theres not enough left for you". Its utter bullshit.
Sure our government doesn't really have enough money right now, but not because of NASAs budget issues, it because they've been handing it out like f-ing candy to assholes on Wall Street who f-cked the country over and went laughing all the way to the bank(err government). We need to get all that money back (or at least stop giving it away) and start spending it on the RIGHT things.
I was refering to gas prices in the US. Each countries transportation system is unique, I believe in the US the tipping point for gas causing severe economic problems is $4/gal.
You are somewhat correct about aviation though. However there has been some efforts lately of using ethanol for plane fuel, so a bio option for aviation may be available in the future.
The problem is that while an incremental increase over time in the cost of gas will be dealt with and adapted to by the populace.
Wholesale drastic increases like what you're proposing, have ENORMOUSLY destructive consequences.
It's like "Field of Dreams". If you build it they will come. It IS sadistic to destroy the transportation infrastructure you have by pricing it out of everyones reach when the replacement technology IS NOT READY!!
If the endeavour highlighted in this article is successful, then no matter what the price of gas, these batteries are going to put the internal combustion engine out of business. Once this technology gets implementable and begins to be utilized, it will replace the old. But you can't put the cart before the horse and punish people for using gas when there are no real alternatives.
And yes, current electric/Hybrid cars are not true alternatives. Hybrids don't get that much better mileage than some of their pure gas counterparts, all telsas are waaaay to expensive, and the Volt isn't here yet.
I am certain we will all have electric cars in the future, I just don't want to see the chaos of your proposed gas prices happen first.
What many Euorpeans would find very hard to get their head around is the extreme lack of population density of much of the United States. The nearest commuter train to where I live is over 4 hours away by car. Mass transit in the rural US will not work because there is not enough population density to make it pay off.
You can tell everyone to move to the city to increase population density, but the people in rural areas are needed to grow the food the cities need.
The $4 / gallon barrier I describe in my original post is due more to the geography of America then it is to anything else. We are just more spread out than Europe. Now true, we can buy more fuel efficient cars (I just got a new 30 mpg one myself), but we're still going to be driving more, much more, because there aren't any other options.
Different situations lead to different needs. The US does need more mass transit, but to bring that to some of the more rural populations of the country, its going to be very very expensive.
Forget modding this thread, I have to respond to this.
You really want that!!!!??? $20-$25 a gallon?
You do realize that the prices you are hoping for represent the end of civilization as we know it.
Having better battery technology is essential, and I have hope for it, but it has to be REAL and then it will take over.
The price you and so many others want to see gas at is utterly destructive unless a new technology is already replacing the old technology.
We have so far barely survived a $4 a gallon gas shock last year, in fact the long term impacts have yet to really be felt. I firmly believe that the gas shock was the trigger that started the entire recession.
$20-$25 per gallon gas would plunge the world into a new dark age. People like you who wish for this are sadistic bastards.
Its definitely something these Apple folks should keep in mind, because the path back to Apple will be pretty rocky if the MS stores fail and they end up on the street.
Gonna blow my mod points with this, but to me that means that if my PC and another users PC are sending "data" between each other and we encrypt that data to the point where it can't be discerned what the data is, the the ISPs on both ends should do NOTHING to stop that communication.
As long as we take away the ability to determine what is legal/illegal via encryption, net neutrality means that any encrypted data must be allowed on the wire. And if they make encrypting network transmissions illegal they'll break the VPN networks that American business relies on.
I really like this position being taken by the FCC.
You've got that right. What really pisses me off is that of all those things, if it were up to me, I'd fund NASA first.
Also, the other thing that pisses me off is that NASA's only looking for and extra $3 billion a year. All these other programs have hundreds of billions of dollar pricetags.....
By the way, it is my sincere belief that if NASA whithers away and dies, there will be no amount of money that can be spent by the government that will be enough to encourage students to be more interested in science and engineering. NASA's PR woes mirror the PR woes of the science and engineering community.
I'm sorry but having an app store and causing problems for some developers beats having no app store at all.
Note: I think iTunes 9's focus on improving the app sync and letting you layout your iPod Touch/iPhones screens speaks volumes about how successful the app store has been.

MythTV versioning has always been goofy. Been using it since 0.11 and yes every 0.01 increase is a major release.
I've never used XvMD, but I can say that I've used VDPAU to play back 1080p with great results. NASA needs to live within it's budget.
Except that what's being asked of for NASA to do is akin to asking someone to drive across the country and then giving them $20 for gas.....
I really hope so. But I don't trust the banks to eventually pay it all back. They're certainly off to a very slow start. And I have no faith AIG will be able to pay its share back in the next century let alone the next 10 years. AIG should have been left to burn....

Ah, poaching is not pro-Apple spin. It's what Microsoft is doing and more power to them for doing it.
I know when I look to my former employers to hire away people I call it poaching, cause thats what it is.
But as is so often stated today "its only business," so tough luck if people leave.

It is not a first-person shooter... yet.
I'm not so sure. Just add one more aspect
jobbing??
You know, if you'd have had your left hand in the appropriate "home" position, you might have gotten to the g key.
Well, that does it, maybe touch typing IS needed in schools.... ;-)
