Why anyone would want to work for this company is beyond me. Why?
"We have employee monitoring software in use and need to track the usage of the console. So, it seems best to use a capture card along with some type of viewer utility. This would allow us to have a record of when and how long the console was used, in case anyone else in management ever has a problem."
Sure, I don't have a game console at work. But I don't have anyone breathing down my neck if I play some flash games or watch youtube videos or whatever during downtime. I'd much rather work someplace where I'm trusted to get my work done on my own (which I do) without excessive monitoring than someplace where they keep tabs on what their employees are doing "just in case". Free game console or not.
You just made all of my social interactions with male peers for the past eight or nine years make sense in a handful of sentences, and for that I must thank you.
I don't believe he ever said or implied that being attractive had no negative points, just that it is an inherent benefit - or perhaps it's better to say weapon - in human social interactions. Somewhat akin to the two-edged sword analogy, it can either help or hurt you. Attractive people either wield their attractiveness knowingly to further their own ends, or unknowingly and to an unknown end. Using it actively can cause unforseen negative repercussions (fanboy stalkers etc.), and using it unknowingly causes all sorts of benefits and detriments to the attractive person and to those around him/her. Being unattractive works in much the same way, albeit with vastly different effects.
Hmm. I have several issues with what you claim to be the beliefs of the Catholic Church, but this isn't the time or place. But yes, I am well aware of the origin and reason for the creation of the Nicene Creed, both religious and secular. The reason for its continued existance, however, is another matter and not one of history but of theology. But hey, if you wish to use your theology training to rationalize things such as it being said that Jesus will come again into effective meaninglessness, I have absolutely no objections. I just doubt the Catholic Church would agree.
Oh, and I hate to break it to you, but Jesus isn't coming again. His second coming was his Transfiguration (after he rose from the dead). It's just that the Fundies/Literalists don't even bother looking up "Revelation" in a dictionary. Revelations is basically another story about Christ *in the past* but written with a lot of religious symbolism. No prophecies.
Tsk. Don't go to church much, do you?
"On the third day He rose in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end."
Straight from the Nicene Creed. Said at every Catholic Mass, and a recital of the cornerstone of Catholic beliefs. Yes, the whole Fundamentalist interpretation of what that specifically means isn't accepted, but that doesn't mean the Catholic Church doesn't believe Jesus is going to come again. You should've just kept your post on the topic of Evolution.:P
Maybe the Patent Office should just be a kind of notary who only records when someone came up with the idea, just to give him or her the legal basis for later defending his or her rights, but does not examine whether the idea is original.
They already have that; it's called registering copyright.
Obviously you've never owned a cat. Cats are never impressed. They're demanding, manipulative, generally self-centered, and always time things to be as inconvenient as possible.
In orbit around Earth? Why would you need that? The Moon isn't that far away, after all. If we focused the funding on making a base on the Moon, it would be quite easy to do without any sort of space station. People were going to the Moon long before we had any silly orbiting stations.
We could just forget the orbiting station, build a base on the Moon, then work towards Mars. We'd probably need some sort of halfway point between the Moon and Mars, but that's totally different from this.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of these rumors about Google (the ones that aren't wishful thinking by fanboys) are actually released specifically so Google can see what people think of the ideas. The Google articles on/. are an excellent resource for the feasibility of Google adopting various ideas.
I'm not a farmer or anything, but you should take into account that most crop plats have entire substantial portions of the plant completely removed. The fruit, the seeds, the leaves, sometimes the entire plant, and so on. In this case, however, all that's being actually removed is the oil from the fruit, and the rest of the fruit is being dropped back on the plants. I don't think there are any other primary crop plants where the bulk of the harvested material is even considered for being used as fertilizer, as the point of a crop plant is that the harvested material is wanted as the crop.
Not that I'm saying it will work; just that it doesn't seem as blatantly impossible to me as you say.
It's not intended to be "breaking news" so much as "something that most geeks would be interested in reading". Most geeks aren't interested about a restaurant with photos of famous people on the walls. Photos of a random engineer at Google and said random people are far more relevant, and therefore more interesting.
The long and short of it is: I found it entertaining, and thought that most geeks/nerds/like-minded people would also, and therefore posted it to the one site where I knew they'd be. Judging from not only the comments but the fact that it got accepted at all, I'd have to say my judgement was corrent.:P Your loss if you don't like the article.
I thought the "goal" of eating was to, well, not die. And I didn't think living had a goal, really. I think you're confusing goal with final outcome...
Which bothers me just as much, honestly. I know a guy who would love nothing more than to find a nice career-woman to marry and raise a family for. It's all so depressingly hypocritical. Women are supposed to be allowed to have whatever career they want and be able to support themselves and be independent, but men aren't supposed to be allowed to take care of the home and family and be dependent on all these women who'd rather not spend their time raising children.
And that's why I really don't like the way feminism is going. It's incredibly frustrating to have my peers think less of me when they find out that I don't actually want to have a career; I want to have some sort of part-time job to help out financially and mainly take care of the house and kids. Just because I can be a highly successful something-or-other and make lots of money and spend all of my time in some office doing the same basic thing for years and years doesn't mean I want to. I'd rather be poorer and happier.

I'm pretty sure, yes. They might send assassins after you, though.

6 to 8mbps is very low bandwidth?! If you really believe that, you've been spoiled terribly.
Sometimes. VHS tapes have a tendency to erode in qualilty over time, especially when watched frequently.

Much like a teenage girl, actually.
P.S. I am not anti-cat. Quite the contrary.
The scary part of that is how many people I've met who would take such a poster all too seriously and believe every word.
Good lord, 10 updates a week? I don't think I even get 10 updates a month.

Honestly, if I wanted all my files to be portable, I'd just use a laptop.

Well I can't exactly argue why people wouldn't feel sorry for a robot, since I in fact feel sorry for said robot. ;P
The videos of it trying to move with the damaged leg make it look like a crippled animal. I can't help but feel sorry for it. :(
Argh, I said that and had a sudden mental image of hordes of animal rights activists protesting the mistreatment of robots.
He was being sarcastic, you know.
I thought it was hilarious and almost brilliant - until you threw in the overused memes. Sigh. Oh well, that's what Slashdot is all about!
