you too can create chemiluminescence!! no need for those commercial light sticks!!! mix hydrogen peroxide and bleach (perchlorate) --- this will make singlet oxygen and dimers of singlet oxygen will form and emit red light, you can easily see it in a darkened room, use the highest percentage peroxide you can find, this is (relatively) safe as long as you don't drink the bleach................the mentos/diet coke thing isa hoot to do with kids
comcast in CT gives (no other options where I am):
Communications 3.9 megabits per second
Storage 472.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.2 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

and this is with a first generation Airport, last time I checked get about 6 using ethernet
elevators in new buildings have notoriously high problem rates for the first year or so
"slashdot" for the elevator crowd: http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a.tcl?topic= Elevator%20Problem%20Discussion
"Incidents involving elevators and escalators kill about 30 and seriously injure about 17,100 people each year in the United States, according to data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Injuries to people working on or near elevators - including those installing, repairing, and maintaining elevators, and working in or near elevator shafts - account for 14- 15 (almost half) of the deaths. The two major causes of death are falls and being caught in/between moving parts of elevators/escalators. Incidents where workers are in or on elevators or platforms that collapse, are struck by elevators or counterweights, or are electrocuted are also numerous."
Adobe would cost about $25 billion, or so, with $4-5 billion in sales; Apple's cap is around $60 billion with about $20 billion in sales...... Apple can clearly afford it but it is not clear that Adobe is a key to the future, the future is probably more in the media center thingie......
Aperture pegs both processors on an MBP but then so does Lightroom.... as to bugs there are about 13,000 posts on the Apple discussion site
http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
and there are probably about the same number in the Lightroom forums.... while I like most Apple apps I've been using Lightroom (so far) but it has its own "features".... both apps still seem like betas to me, both Apple and Adobe are going with interfaces unlike those in their other apps and each approach has some pluses and minuses.......... with millions of dslrs out there and more being bought every day there is a real market for this type of app and $299 is a lot less than the price of a lens (at least I get edu prices on apps if not lenses)
thomas kuhn: the study of the scientific method in 1962..... that is pretty funny (and so wildly wrong)..... started long, long before then and Kuhn's ideas tend to be much more prominent the further away from the philosophy of science one goes....
"You don't. You fire them and outsource their jobs to India." this may have been intended as a wisecrack.......... but I'm writing a memo about this now, our IT (at a university) is bloated, incompetent, overpaid, non-responsive, out of date etc etc, I figure the only way to get any change is to outsource (almost all) of them
the first draft of the human haplotype map (HapMap) is already done: http://www.hapmap.org/

the biggest threat to MSFT is that you don't need Windows or Office to do what most home computers are used for: web/photos/IM/music, occasional writing etc; somebody is going to be the next Dell by figuring out a package that many folks will buy and selling it at $100 or so- the MSFT tax- below Dell's price for equivalent hardware, it may not be this year (lots have already tried and failed) but sooner than later this is going to happen
Consumer Reports also rates Apple laptops at the top of the heap in reliability (also a user survey)
my nearly six year old G3 400 MHz Pismo is doing fine with 10.4.3--upgraded to 20 GB and 576 MB--but it is going to be supplanted by a duo core powerbook if they are announced next week, the thing is fine for email/web and occasional Photoshop but it can only play Dr. Who videos at 4.5 fps, don't even ask about HD Quicktime fps, also had a 5300 that was problem free but sold that to get the airport and other features of the Pismo
detailed review at the "camera geek" site: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscr1/
very interesting design, my guess is that the innovations in the R1 are more likely to migrate into the point and shoot lines (of Sony and the other camera companies) than into DSLRs
Rebecca Runkle of Morgan Stanley raised the price target and maintained an "overweight" rating on Apple Computer in anticipation of a strong holiday season and continued portfolio expansion with the potential introduction of Macintosh computers based on Intel chips next year.
"Apple is evolving into a growth-driven portfolio franchise," said the analyst.
Runkle expects calendar fourth-quarter 2005 results to be "impressive," driven by an expanded iPod installed base, new iPods, extended digital content and CPU refreshes.
The analyst said an Intel Mac launch in the first half of 2006 would be a major catalyst to near-term and long-term upside. She raised the price target on Apple to $70 from $60.
"As the portfolio strategy expands, margins have the potential to increase similar to other secular growth stories," said Runkle. "As a result, upside exists to current expectations and Apple shares continue to look attractive over the next 12 to 18 months."
if they knew anything about quantum mechanics (indeterminancy etc) then the board of ed would have to come up with an alternative to that as well-- of course, then they might also have to ban p and n junctions and all that other semi-conductor stuff..............
one of the nifty features of OS X is that you can clone to a firewire disk that then can be used as the startup disk on (almost) any Mac..... will the current implementation of TPM still allow this? will/does the check see if is any MacTel as opposed to that specific MacTel?
"It's got to be a site that's meaningful from an astrological point of view, but we don't want it to be in place that's so hostile that scientists and people won't go there," Halliday said.
of course he (probably) said astrophysical
I just checked on Medline (to be sure) and there is marginal evidence that quite cold conditions can have a very small effect on arthritis but no support (as I noted above) for barometric pressure effects (do a simple calculation of the force due to any feasible atmospheric effect relative to say standing up and moving about or picking something up)
it may be "widely known" that folks whine before storms..... but this is just another urban legend and there is absolutely no evidence that arthritis etc is worse when storms approach/leave and studies have shown that there is no correlation between symptoms and weather, and by the way going out in the cold and rain does not increase your chance of getting a cold.....
I hear that the RIAA is going to sue anyone who plays music (from any source) loud enough for anyone else to hear........
"single user license" means single user........
geez, your're right, K9 is coming back, I thought that your comment was a joke
the BBC should make the content available (legally) to the folks in the US, but who knows when that will be (the new episodes are much better than I expected)
geez, if you worry about this---what about when (most of) the W-68 design somehow made it onto the web a few years ago? it may be still out there....... the hard part is getting the U235/Pu239- not in building the bomb, as far as we know everyone has had success on their first try (now that is scary)

way back when Sun's market cap (now about 11 B) was bigger than Apple's (now about 72B), just two years ago the market caps were about the same
well, I ordered one with a 7200 rpm 100 GB; big jump from my current pismo G3 400 (10x ?) that runs 10.4.3, will post specs and pics when it arrives

way back when Kaleidoscope was a nifty UI app for OS 9 and the guy who wrote it (Greg Landweber) went to work for Apple
