  1. It worked extremely well. Competition skyrocketed, prices dropped. If the government actually got off its ass and fulfilled it's mandate instead of being corporate lapdogs and kept them from re-merging, you'd have a lot more than 4 major telcos in the US... which is still 3 more than you had in 1983.

I sometimes forget how out of touch with reality the users on sites like Slashdot and HN are. Facebook has been a place to find work for years now, with massive groups centered around all sorts of jobs. I'm on a local group for people working/hiring in food production (restaurants, catering, etc) and there are 36 thousand(!) members. I got a friend who does prep work and bartending, said she hasn't found a job outside of Facebook in 2 years.

Using writers is the only way to create more than a small fraction of the TV time people demand.

What's the problem with just watching the good shows? I mean, if you decide to consume everything, then there's no form of expression that worthwhile. Do you realize the utter garbage that is published every year, the hundreds of thousands of hours of unlistenable music, or wasted pieces of canvas. The only difference between those and television, is that you have access to the vast majority of TV being made in your market. The fact that there are good show, and that they can be so good, means that television is something worth paying attention to.
