Anyway, I was working on some school project, printing transparencies out of PC Globe. We had a drawer for paper and printables in general, so I reach in, pull out a piece of transparency film and stick it in.

    It too never came out.

We ended up printing out the 'rear end' of the printer until it was returned to OSU some four years later. It wasn't really a problem, other than the fact that pages comming out that end had to be re-sorted. The first page came out on the bottom, right side up, instead of on the bottom, face down. When my dad was working on his manuscript, it didn't make him happy at all.

The thing is, when you're trying to get your critically acclaimed lower-budget movie into the oscars, do you go with the encrypted screeners? No, you release an unencrypted screener, and everybody sees it. Boom, you've got an underdog success... and we're back to everybody releasing.

Or that many Academy members won't want to hook up a special DVD player each time they watch a movie? Remember, the studios want as many Academy members as they can to watch each movie, because only that gives them a shot of getting awarded. Every 'problem' a given member has with seeing a movie will reduce its chances come Oscar night.

Two areas where the USA is just out in left field, cellular services and banking. The first one has stopped suprising me, the second one blew me away. I consider my country (Poland) to be backwards, especially when it comes to commercial services - like banking. It's not.

Not only does my bank use one time passwords, the card they're on is a scratch-off card. This gives me 2 additional levels of protection. Not only does it prevent someone from peeking at my card, but it let's me verify that I made each transaction. I don't need to keep track of the last number I used, it keeps track for me. And I don't need the card unless I'm actually moving money around - all I need is my login and password.

The web interface on my bank is incredible - I can check on all transactions since I opened the account.I can set up sub-accts on the fly, issue debit cards to each of them, and my debit card works great online - so I can keep track of those internet purchases. Between-bank money transfers take a max of 1 day, usually same-day if I make it before 17.30, transfers within my bank are instantaneous - really handy for lending my brother some money *fast*.

And the icing on the cake, the thing that made me go to this bank - instant text-message updates on my current account. I get a transfer - I get an SMS, I buy something - I get an SMS. It's incredibly fast (I usually get the SMS before they hand me the reciept to sign) and incredibly useful. I know how much money I have, how much money I spent that day. It really helps to stem the spending sprees that plastic seems to lend itself to.

And all this, from my local, Polish bank.

So every couple of weeks, I'd take the bus to a large supermarket, buy stuff for 2-3 weeks and take a cab home. Now, I save both time and money just by putting orders through a local grocery store.

For fresh produce, meat and fish, I still go to the local market. But for name branded goods with freshness seals, it's online shopping all the way. Last weekend I ordered just beverages - 60l of juices, water and pop. That's about 70kg of weight (counting bottles + packaging), so I was more than happy to not have to carry it up.

There are some things I will never buy online - fruit, veggies, meat (they don't sell them anyway) - but for the other stuff, it's a great solution.
