Why do these cases seem to take for ever? Two years sofar, for evidence that SCO claims it had? In our fast tech world, a case could be solved when the technologies involved are no longer relevant for the world at the time. The worst is that the winner could have lost all potential revenue at that time.
I love bloggers for they raise issues that the main stream media chooses not to raise.
However, my issue with [some] bloggers is that some of them know nothing, and to make matters worse, they do not know that they know so little or nothing at all!
Some of these bloggers to the extreme, I am sorry to say, know so little to even know that they know nothing!
We live in interesting times don't we?
...and that ia at my formwer Univeristy (Makerere University http://www.makerere.ac.ug/, which was once one of the best institutions on the continent. But, and a big but,...let's get ready for the pundits on this issue: -
My take on pundits:
I love pundits for they throw light on issues that the main stream might miss.
However, my issue with [some] pundits is that some of them know nothing, and to make matters worse, they do not know that they know so little or nothing at all!

My former University would never have afforded a Solaris System or even Windows to do what Linux is doing down there.
I got to know that unwanted computers from the west were also being dumped there and made into useful equipment. In the early 90s, I studied Mathematics and used a 386 to simulate population dynamics in a subject known as bio-mathematics. Another win for Linux, but let's sharpen our knowledge as we prepare for the pundits.

It would be better if you provided examples of the risks one could see in an assumed example of an Open Source License. It is correct to modify your last sentence to read..."Thus, they go and write their own license to cover the percieved risks that they apparently see."?
When one looks closely at these licensing issues, one discovers that it ia always about the money and control. I will admit bias here. I read all the links with the bent mind toward the belief that it's always about the money.
I wonder whether we could finally finally have a Linux desktop candidate in Ubuntu/Kubuntu. The reviews so far and the fact that folks at Distrowatch ahref=http://www.distrowatch.com/http://www.distro watch.com/> have Ubuntu at #1 says a lot about that potential fact. I also understand that it is quite fast.
I will be doing my eveluation too, but I will go with a somewhat biased mind I have to admit. If the Kubuntu folks have not trimmed down: for KDE - sane defaults and for GNOME - making it easier to do common desktop stuff, this will be just another distro.
I wonder whether they will be considering autopackage ahref=http://www.autopackage.org/http://www.autopa ckage.org/>. Anyone know about this?
An innovation from DownUnder! Are there any other innovations from the Aussies to speak of? I must admit I never took them that serious before. This changes my mind for sure.
" VideoLAN is seriously threatened by software patents due to the numerous patented techniques it implements and uses.
Let us get the names of those entities that are threatening with software patents. I will be very willing to join the effort to turn these companies the SCO route. My fear though, is that VideoLAN and other OSS companies will simply shift production to Asia where patents are not that well respected. This will mean that the US will be left behind. We are not doing that well in cell phone technology already. Asians and Europeans seem to be very advanced. We all know that the cell phone technology we are now getting as Americans is kin-of old if one compares it with what the Asians are doing now.
I'm just tired of DiDio. Isn't she the one who said just last year, that it will take Linux close to a decade to even be percived to be competitive to Windows? I better become an analyst to. How do I start? And there is Gartner too spewing "facts" about Linux all the time...
The issue I have with this kind of reasoning is that even with the facts known, pollution especially goes on unabated! Our own president (Bush) chose to opt out of Kyoto. Meanwhile, some of our people are being found with diseases that were once unheard of just a few decades ago. Childhood diabetes is one, and what about juvenile cancer? The current research in fuel efficient vehicles and the like is driven not much by pollution, but by profits, when the price of oil reaches way up there. Who doesn't know this? Don't you?
I wish our government and scientists dedicated more work to more important issues IMO, like pollution, healthcare, deficits and the injustices of the world, government perpetuated or corporate. As I write this, I figure I might be un-employed soon, as my job gets out-sourced to Russia. In America alone, almost 50 million of our residents do not have any kind of healthcare. With all these facts, we then go round the world "preaching" fairness and prosperity.
What about in addition to mentioning Windows this or Windows that...or even Apple quicktime this or that, a link was added for Kaffeine, MPlayer, Totem or any other Linux video player? Is that hard to understand/see? Heck...
Mediocre or no Linux support is what I find on the video link provided by the story. Why? I hear Google relies on Linux a lot. If this is true, why is Linux support very disappointing? The same applies to GMail, and oh, even Yahoo!
I know that Java is used to push realtime market/financial data to a possible countless number of hosts. One only has to visit http://www.refcofx.com/FinanceChart.html?symbol=EU R/USD to see java in action, (assuming the java runtime is installed). Can one use Python to do the same? Where would it play its role? The backend or on client machines?
Yes, they are leaving us behind. When shall we hear of GMs, Chevys, Fords and other American companies making news as firsts in their respective fields? As our CEOs, CFOs and their cronies struggle with corruption allegations, the Japanese and Russians are slowly dominating us. One can hardly find an American music/video system now...next will be the automobile. We may fall just like the once great Romans did. Remember the Roman Empire?
Some control and discretion is needed here. I mean, I even do not know which story to believe on April Fools! I think this is getting out of hand.
Guys, it's already April 2nd over here. I am sure our colleagues in the US/Canada can still enjoy these jokes if they are. What the hell...Oh, I better sleep otherwise slashdot will make me run amok.
I am happy for this, but for sure, his site is gonna get the [slashdot] effect. The native GIMP interface was no good in my opinion. I pay no penny for the previledge to use it so I do not complain. I hope he's got enough bandwidth and backed up by a nicely configured Linux System.
We've seen it before. Who does not remember Trusted Computing? By the way, it it still around? Do I encounter it while using a Windows box? I will be biased here...it seems trusted computing cannot be trusted after all!

Yes, you are not alone. Many, amd more especially here at slashdot think [and believe] they know more than they actually do!
What will it be this time? Will it be AMD inside?
Luckily for us all, Microsoft's EMBRACE, EXTEND, and EXTINGUISH will not take root in this case.

Heard of Samba?
