The Japanese just like the Russians, are doing their research without any of our knowledge or bragging of any kind. I have a feeling that just like with the transistor in the 50s, these Japanese will come from behind and overwhelm our American companies in this new category of technology.
I just looked around my living room and found that I have nothing electronic made here, save for the front door lock that was made by a company in Ohio.
thru lots of glass and I have to wonder, how far behind is the space station at this point?"
Not very far behind...the Russians, whose Soyuz system is "decades behind ours", and have had almost 2,000 successful launches with it, have been very helpful in keeping the ISS going. I have also heard that they (the Russians) have been giving us some technical ideas on how to deal with the complexities of space travel. Of course NASA administrators will not admit this.
What I observe is what I call cell phone bloat. Much as I'd like to send my photo to my loved ones once a while, I resent the idea that these gadgets are no longer produced in their simplest terms as it once used to be.
Here in Canada, major Telcos charge exorbitantly just for the previledge of being able to send and/or view video. These are features that users do not use that much. How many of you send photos via their cell phones on a regular basis?
Now one sees projectors...next will be God knows what...! Maybe it's because I am in Canada and being charged unfairly. What is the experience of others?
I see some kind of retaliation or what I'd call divide & rule, by the French government. "If you do not cooperate, (read `pay for content') I will go to your rival(s)." M$ used this against IBM on a limited level in the 80s and they succeeded to some extent.
We should write to SCO to remind them of the fact. Here they are bashing the GPL yet go ahead and use content from an "unfriendly" Linux related site. After this message, I am gonna "overwhelm" their `contact us' mail box.
"The Penguin's teeth have grown"! This is what the pundits are gonna sing now. The challenge will be more prey to find. Ofcourse, everyone knows that living things have to eat every once a while. I hope Tux the penguin will find more prey.
...a comprehensive howto on how one can get and maintain clear-crisp fonts on Linux as the default fonts on my SuSE 9.2 are blurry. And now, my Konqueror, (the latest and greatest sofar), cannot maintain toolbars where I place them! What the hell...
M$ will provide a "security" patch that will check for the presence of "potentially viral" software (read Firefox) then provide a solution that will cripple Firefox's functionality. This might be in form of FF always crashing or even closing some ports that FF needs to work well. When this happens very few users will dare use Firefox again. Maybe the Europeans will tame M$ this time.
How widely is it known? I bet a good number of people know Google or Yahoo or MSN once mentioned...question is: If one went to the street and asked the ordinary Joe Six Pack about Wikipedia I doubt there would be more than 1% who have even heard of it. In Toronto where I am now, people seem to think that the world is just made of the big players in every field. Just made a call to a university lecturer here...he's never used Wikipedia and does not even know what goes on at its site! Liking up with Google might help here.
How come the article is not yet slashdotted? Is it because it is the weekend or what? This is one of the very few times I have been successful with an article within its first minutes of posting. That was good news though. Go Firefox go...!
I will answer myself. This guy is wastimg time. He thinks M$ will listen? I wish him the best. It's like talking to a statue, hoping to get an answer. I wish him luck. I suggest the following: -
Let the other browser creators build a site, publisize it and ashame M$. This might work but no guarantees.
I can see lawyers here smelling something like money in this situation. Some on one side will say it's a matter of civil rights and others will say...wait a second....this is the issue. We'll see.
Meanwhile, I guess this poor coder/programmer will be given these words....you guessed them..."you are FIRED"!
The creators of IE Eradicator http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html should sharpen their tool. Currently it can get rid of IE on a number of Windows systems. On the other hand, expect M$ to entrench IE deeply into Windows, and to also design Windows in such a way that systems that have a dis-functional IE are also broken.
My concern is M$ might put out an advisory that goes to the effect that Firefox does no good to the Windows environment, and that a user is well advised to avoid it all together.
... [Linux] zealots are gonna console themselves on this. If it were the other way round, you'd hear them praising themselves on how Linux is great as it's available on all platforms.
I see you (the submitter) have not mentioned multimedia! And ohh, the topic "successful Linux desktop" is subjective.
The question to ask/consider would be...Successful as defined by who? To me, SuSE is successful but after heavy modification of KDE as discussed here at slashdot many times, and installing MPlayer to handle all my multimedia needs. I also use streamtuner because I have not been able to fine any other KDE based directory browser, that will let you record a stream too.
Unfortunately, I have never had any success with amaroK and Kmail. Amarok keeps crashing, and its equalizer sucks, the analyzer is always behind...while Kmail cannot connect to my ISP, even after letting it detect what the ISP supports. It would be interesting to know that Evolution is just fine.
Now let me wait...to see whether there is any slashdotter who will say this is not positive. I hope there will be none. On the other hand, it would be better if Novell gives a hand to the Firefox folks so that they can deliver management tools for the up-coming browser. This is what it lacks now. In case they are already assisting in some way, my apologies. I understand IE has had this feature for ages.
What OS is it running? In case it's not Linux (chances are it isn't), can one slap Linux on it? How would it (Linux) perform? BTW, what distro would perform best?
The French are gonna face pressure from the US on this. This will be fuelled by the love-hate relationship the French and Americans have at present. P2P zealots, do not rejoice yet. You could set-up an NX server from NoMachine in France, download whatever you want and send it to GMail's GB storage, then get down to your US based system and download the "goods".

Oh, I hope my man Ballmer is awake. He should grab his bags and prepare to leave for Korea. We surely live in interesting times don't we?
You should also have asked him to install/use some form of Linux. Linspire 5.0 looks good at the moment.

Good move Google but what happens if every news organization sues or threatens to sue? Where shall we get our news from?
I wish I had mod points. I'd deem you redundant.

Look here zealots. You have your work cut out. Let the GNOME/KDE flames begin.

Our PHBs will ignorantly comply I know.

Care to give some examples? This would help...or are you bound by some non-disclosure agreement?

This reminds me of the [old] VW Beetle http://www.edmunds.com/media/reviews/generations/v w.beetle/1955.vw.beetle.500.jpg. This machine was air cooled. I do not know whether todys beetle is air cooled too.
