Being a teacher here in Canada, and having a chance to teach students from all sorts of backgrounds, I find that even students from East Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia) are better at maths than our own breed.
Heck, they even speak better English without slang and all those f**k and n* words!
These students do not use calculators yet they score well over 90% in these subjects. And they also complete tests in record time. We should not forget that these students come from regions where computer usage is very low, and are also "supposed" to be from the so called "Third World."
A student once told me that the integral I had put on the board had a problem. I was suprised....How did he know? It turns out that he had seen that particular format of the equation as one that SHOULD be on a particular format if it is to be solved by a human being. He was right.
These students have a good work ethic too. They take their studies very seriously. On the other hand, our own bread listen to mp3s and play games on their way to school. I have also heard some as even copying their homework.
Incidentally, the Canadian born students think they are special, and that they are better than these Africans. They still think Africa is so backward. One of these students' father told me that his son is a product of a "Third World" system, but better than any student in his class.
The best students in my class are ALL foriegn born, and come from 3rd word countries. I have since changed my view of the world, and plan to visit Uganda soon.
One should not think that these students were being put in a grade higher than where they should have been. They were simply smarter.
I thought that US is a free nation, where all sorts of freedeoms flourish. Thsese include freedeoms at all extremes, including the fredom to associate or otherwise. What is this man spitting?
I liked IBM PCs for a number of things. They were very durable and had very good keyboards. Even today, an IBM keyboard can with-stand coffee and hard strokes from a frustrated programmer.
But if I were IBM, I'd still maintain a presence in the PC business because it is this business that made IBM a household name. The same thing may happen to DELL or HP.
I see executives using HP or DELL at home and asking themselves: "Why not use DELL/HP for the serveices IBM wants to remain focused on?" IBM will discover that HP/DELL want to eat its last lunch!
Already, HP won a services agreement in with Canada's second biggest bank (CIBC). This trend will surely continue. I speculate that DELL will also crowd the services market once DELL discovers that that is where the action is.
Is there any remote chance of getting these spyware authors prosecuted. Where does the law stand on this? After all, it's in the US where all sorts of law suites can be entertained by courts.
My argument woud be that these authors are invading my privacy when I legitimately get onto the web.
On the other hand, I will shoot myself in the foot by seeing their potential argument too:
They could argue that by visiting specific sites and probably clicking some links, I agree to enjoying all services they offer on these sites including stuff that would be installed on my PC.
I was supprised that even though a good number of Slashdotters are programmers themselves, http://www.python.org/ was not slashdotted.
Can one tell me why I should learn python and not any other programming language anyway?
From the little I have seen, python seems to be a command line language. Is it anywhere similar to Visual Basic, which I have come to see and experience through a GUI?
The Asians have done great technological strides in recent decades. Already, in the US, the best cars, televisons, computers and their monitors radios and phones are made in Asia. Multimedia effort bore fruit in Asia long ago...we in the US are just beginning to see what can be done in this field. The problem is, when an implementation is made, we brag about it. The Asians are working like the Russians - they never brag. When one visits Tokyo, a realization comes to fact that US cities are far behind.
Services too are being outsorced to Asia. Naturally research dollars will follow. This can only be bad for American students.
Toyota, in just decades is at the fore-front of the car industry already. This is a company that made a car 40 years after Ford and GM. Contrast that with GM, the alleged giggest car producer. You will go to every continent and find Toyota in good numbers, but not for GM. Now, Ford has been replaced by Toyota. GM will be next.
Having lived in a number of Asian countries, I can attest to the fact that Asians are simply driven to succeed. They will pirate/copy and do anything to get to where they have to. Sometimes, their respective governments support them.
Pretty soon, the Asian block will be in position to threaten "economic sanctions" on the US. After all, even the flu-shot vaccine will soon be Asian made.
My beloved country USA will be left with rhetoric as the only means to apply influence arround the world.
Open source will not help us that much because already, M$'s influence is already on the decline at least in Asia.
One would easily think that the US, being a very old democracy/civilization, would be wise enough not to fall into such traps. But alas, they never learn!
This confirms to me that the US will be behind the world in a few decades. I am also very sure that portions of this custom Windows will be outsourced. The Russians will get some insight to what runs the so called "greatest military machinery" in the world.
Question is: Why are the American bureucrats making mistakes such as these?
Short answer: Some official's hands must have been greased for this deal to get a "seal of approval."
Before Slashdotters mode me unfairly, I'd like to mention that it has always been the case that whenever obvious mistakes have been made, one's hands have always been found as having been greased. Numerous inquiries have shown this.
...is to fire the IT manager, or whoever sanctioned this method of implementation. How do you fall into such a trap?
Next, they should setup a similar Linux environment and see how a similar upgrade would have gone. This should be done before the Linux zealots declare that theirs would have been any better.
In the meantime, let M$ and its cronnies be prepared for the wrath of Linux promoters.
Linux and OSS will succeed with or without M$ support. Heck, Linux has got where it is without M$ support per-se. I do not see why this should not continue.
For Intel, if there is cash to be made, Intel will go for it. What will be needed is to show M$ the numbers which will be too big to ignore.
May be it's time we start getting them manufactured in the US. We all know that the US has the "best" of technology when compared to the rest of the world.
Be careful. There's a potential of lawsuites in th every litigious American society.
We should not pride ourselves in this statistic because we seem to think that we are the greatest nation on earth, yet far behind on social issues and technology.
Sadly, our being behind is fuelled by corporate interests who seem to like the status quo solely for profits.
I urge Americans to visit Sweden, Norway or Denmark in order to see how a "near perfect" system works.
No wonder, trends on technology are now being "dictated" on us by foreigners, who seem to be way ahead of us on a number of fronts including the all important Mathematics.
I have not come across a better bootable Linux than MEPIS, http://mepis.org/. I was even able to listen to the BBC's.ram and.rm streams out of the box! I was also able to pick my favorite station that streams in Windows Media as well. No distro comes close, and its package handling and fonts are better than what most distros offer save for Linspire. And ohh...it's Debian based. Everyone should try MEPIS.
In the Linux world, we have seen this kind of argument, isn't it? "Linux is safer...", No, it isn't..." But you will agree that perception matters a lot don't you?
Example: I still have some European ancestors in Africa! They never left, and will never live anywhere else...yet I still have relatives who think there is nothing good in Africa, and would not see any reason to even visit!
From the statement "It looks at how to improve software development efficiency through visual modeling, generating code from abstract models, and systematic reuse." in the introductory remarks, I am sure Mono foots the bill here. Go Mono! I hope those in charge of filing for patents have already done so, or are about to do so.
Yes, how can one be charged for recieving a call? That is ludicrous. One week, I got swamped by spam. Messages just appeared on my phone. For each, I was being charged 10 Canadian cents. I dumped my phone company because they would not budge. Though politicians in the west talk of the free/open market, here in Canada, one cannot start another cell phone company. We cannot even watch foreign TV stations, save for American channels. This is because there is some agreement with cable companies here...in all, money is at play. Yet on the other hand, we claim to have one of the most free markets in the world. What a world!
It takes long for everything in the US. I also wonder why. But after lining there for a while, I can think of one reason: MONEY and Corporate or call it special interests. If there is any interest by any of these groups in anything, development always gets affected. That is why countries of the world are embracing Linux but the US lags behind. Western Europe is very advanced in the cell phone industry because Europeans seem to see things differently. They are more socialist than Americans.
That is why for example, Korea and Japan have been able to beat the US in internet penetration although I understand the Internet was invented in the US.
That is why the US still uses the inch and foot while the rest of the world went metric years ago!
That is why the US is still a major polluter while the rest of the world has invested in more efficient production processes.
I was shocked when I saw so many old 70's cars on American roads yet more efficient cars are being manufactured by GM and its competitors in the US.
Sadly, Americans believe that theirs is the best country to live in. I hope some can visit countries like Denmark and Sweden where I found a society so efficient that much of what Americans have to painly pay for is free in these countries.
Yes, this time, these efforts might lead to something. Does it mean that we'll have one common binary for an application for example? Or does it mean that administrators will have one certification?
I am sorry to say that I see AOL's policies as confused! Instead of at least supporting their own product in addition to IE, they whole heartedly back IE. [Some thought AOL had been bribed/bought by *cough* M$]. As a result anyway, Netscape goes to the dogs, an organization is created to oversee its development...this creates a sense of "it's done with Netscape". Developers initially fled Netscape. Now after seeing that Mozilla and its products are not doing that badly after all. AOL wakes up. I wish them well and all the success they need. This is the same thing those that do not support Linux are doing, yet Linux direction now can only be in the upward direction.
Can't be because glaucoma was very very present before anything similar to today's computer was ever produced. Read the article for entertainment purposes.

Any legal minds here?
Can one tell me why I should learn python and not any other programming language anyway?
From the little I have seen, python seems to be a command line language. Is it anywhere similar to Visual Basic, which I have come to see and experience through a GUI?
Who had attempted top kill it? Or who had declared it dead?

Nope! Not in Canada for sure.
Will Linux play a significant or insignificant role here? Ohh by the way, is Linux able to participate in such a role-out?
