Any slashdotter with some experience or has test driven JDS? Though it is based on SuSE, I still found that even with the latest SuSE product, I still had to get M$ fonts to make my drive better. If these M$ fonts will be downloaded for all systems, what is the best method of doing it? I mean, doing it with the least overhead?
As an American, I worry that our government is spending a lot of attention on air safety. The terrorists are quiet, perfecting their plans and one day...one day, they will hit us. All the railways are unsafe, a terrorist can still wait for the big political leaders and explode his car or an IED, just like they do in IRAQ. It does not take a lot of technology to defeat us. This reminds me of Somalia because even with all the technology, one bullet to the neck results in death. Our dead now number > 900 and still counting!...Cb..
I am very very impressed by PostgreSQL. I am waiting for the geeks to slap a programmable GUI onto it. I know there are several that I can mention here, but none comes even half close to what M$'s Jet engine has with Access. I once tried to put together one with PHP but the project became very complex for my managing. I abandoned the effort. Slashdotters, can we start another project to put a decent GUI onto this DB engine? When that is done, business logic can be programmed at form level, reports can be done in XML and published to PDF, even better, error handling at form level with input masks etc can be done. And before you go on, I'd like to remind you that there is Kexi, pgAdmin and so many others. What do you think?
The Russians still have the best technology in space. While the Americans were speculating about where the MIR would land, the Russian scientists were confident that it'd land on target. Indeed it did land 1.3 km within the targeted area. As usual, the Americans simply congratulated them. Russians are the only link to the ISS. They realized long long ago that the space shuttle was way too expensive...but they had one of their own that flew and landed within feet of its intended target on the runway.
To understand this, the Russians only have to prepare to sell some of their [space] tech to the Chinese, then Americans will come out screaming.
They also produce some of the deadliest weapons on earth, and all in simple production houses...and ohh...they also have the heaviest and biggest flying aircraft in the world. Please google for the Antonov-225.
Yes they were. I remember a Russian Scientist noted this but a NASA official was simply saying..."...no confirmation nor denial...". This is the usual western [political] rant. It was clear from the photos that it had to do with the insulation. The arcitecture of the shuttle is very well known.
I agree with you on all points raised but please remember that in no document introducing Linux have I ever seen the copying capabilities of Linux being introduced as having 2 separate clipboards. They always say that copying/pasting can be done in the usual "X" way and the Windows way. No mention is made of the separate clip-boards. That's why I humbly request that these two clipboard be synchronized by default in order to accommodate the two worlds of Linux, the geek and the novice.
Have they worked on the spell checker that would sometimes just turn off, or would not work if aspell or ispell are not installed? One of these should be installed by default.
What about the clip-board where you would sometimes want to highlight some text [for replacement], only to find that it has replaced the text you had in the so called X-clip board? I know it is configurable but Joe Six Pack has always found problems. A behavior more like that found in M$ windows is more acceptable. Here, the geeks can choose not to synchronize the two clip-boards.
Where is Konqueror in this project? Will it (Konqueror) simply follow the "leaders" as it has somewhat been in other instances? How can they get involved?
...because Linux is not about to go away and the most important thing is that it is not profit oriented. But as the GPL implies, you can take the code and use it for what ever you want, even controlling a nuclear reactor. Yes, M$ should live with it.
I have always thought that there could be a different mode of life out there. That is, one that flourishes on a different kind of gas other than oxygen or any other gases we know here. It could even be the environment that is different. Yet I see NASA and the SETI people looking for a life similar to ours. This is obviously waste! Remember that according to Godly people, nothing is impossible by him. So this kind of life could be possible too. How can a [small] man like me suggest new strategies to these NASA/SETI guys?
I like the screen shots. For those who have used it, can I use an alternative browser other than Mozilla? I still find the Lotus Notes interface more intuitive and simple because it uses tabs as in tabbed browsing. In a case, the browser is implemented as another tab.
Anyone know whether these airlines are using Linux in any [mission critical] way? BTW, what would you consider as the most important mission critical system? Could it be in Banking, Hospitals, Airline systems, Educational, Nuclear....? What is a mission critical system anyway?
...if in the next few months, several M$ wins are announced. Then once again, Linux zealots will cry foul. For America, I have come to realize that ego is more often than not, the most important thing. After all, there is an un-written rule that goes, "fire and hire at will". Whether a candidate can match the responsibilities of the job or not, is an after-thought. Software will be the candidate this time. Even then, blame is passed on till the smallest man is held responsible. We in Canada have inherited a few of these traits. We call this particular one "...Passing the buck...". It is very nasty when you cannot find a victim to pass the buck onto...! Welcome to capitalism the American way.
Countries like China and Russia, that are powerful enough to stand up to the US, will simply ignore those so called patents and innovate. to better their peoples' lives. We in the "third world" will follow. The Chinese are already in space, don't you think they have "trampled" on some US patents? The world will move on one way or another...with or without M$ and its patents.
South Korea as a country has an attribute that helps out. This is Population Density. South Korea has one of the highest population densities in the world. This helps out because it then becomes easier provide services to people who are geographically near each other. The other thing is ambition. South Koreans, Chinese and Japanese have a great ambition to succeed. They will do whatever it takes. Contrast that with the US government policies which only cater for the big multi-nationals. No wonder the US is falling behind fast! No televisions or radios are being made in USA! Very soon, this terrible statistic will graduate to other high end goods. Koreans are not greedy too.
Result: Research money will be channeled to those countries that have some infrastructure. It is already happening. I guess I am already off-topic. I lived in China for some time and realized that hacking and copying foreign superior goods is *cough* government *cough* funded!
The other thing is that like the Japanese, Koreans are really loyal to their country and its industries. Even those in countries like Canada buy Korean goods. This channels cash back to the mother companies enabling them to do more research. At a college where I was, the Koreans and Japanese were importing food/water and stuff from their mother countries or buying FROM stores friendly to their countries. Americans cannot be that loyal...NEVER!
Yes, Slashdotters, which among the major distros is left? Anyone know whether X.org is doing anything about the [horrible] Linux fonts found in major default Linux installs? I have always had to install M$ fonts or run the webfonts.sh script to get decent fonts. This is shameful! The Linux gurus create a world class OS but have not yet made fonts for Linux? What do you think?
...I mean, if you were SCO? Their case is surely going no where; the stock has plummeted; there is little [good] business outlook and it's unlikely that SCO will re-capture lost clients. Even then, any news that SCO generates these days is NOT about its new products but this Linux [rights] case. I guess SCO realizes that they have nothing much more to lose at this moment. We all know that like terrorists, a man with nothing to lose is a very dangerous one. Likewise, if one is desperately sinking, this individual may try hanging onto a reed hoping to survive! SCo is in this situation.
Can someone here please explain in a language that a lay man understands, what the PHP license is all about? The GPL is very clear..."take the code, use it in what ever you like, but if you ever include it in any products, the recipients of your software must be able to get the source-code with the same rights as you got from the GPLed code..." That is in the lay-mans language.
Now, can some one please paste what the PHP license is all about. Please understand that the lay-man might not easily understand legal terms, myself included.
I don't think they have figured that out yet, I think that is clear. They are struggling with not so much open source, per se, but rather they are no longer the low price solution.
I beg to differ on this. M$ have had different solutions depending on who you talk to. At one time and to some extent now, it is the FUD plus TCO studies.
The other solution will be seen in the several service packs which I am sure will break comatibility in the name of security fixes. Just wait for LongHorn. There will be very very tight integration between applications that for cities like Newham, which decided to go the M$ route it will be very expensive to jump ship.
We shall also see more donations to schools and non profit organizations in order to get generous tax refunds from the tax man.
It should be known that a man with nothing to lose is a very dengerous man. Once it dawns to M$ that Linux and OSS is really unstoppable, M$ will do all the desperate things in order to stay relevant. The price of the office suite will fall. At this point, M$ will see that there is nothing to lose.
I'd like to bring M$ down if I could. One of the ways we have to promote is to emphasize the FREEDOM and NOTcost alone that OSS brings to the table. Apart from the few ppoints I have suggested, what would you do if you were in M$ feet and you see the Linux train coming after you with no chance of ever stopping? I mean, you cannot buy them and it is very diffcult to compete with them since they are not that much profit minded. M$ knows Linux will not go away.
PHP is "Server-Side". Can it be forked into some sort of "Client-Side" PHP? Something similar to MS-Visual Basic? Later on drag 'n' drop for widgets and addition of business logic, can be implemented to create web based front-ends to popular database back-ends. Just a question.
What happened to the Trustworthy Computing paradigm? I guess if you now mention that to [Sir] Bill G., you might not get all that much! On the other hand, I ask myself why these coders (or virus authors) do not direct their energy to coding for OSS. So many projects need a hand. My help goes in submitting bug reports and cash whenever possible. [But] I could be wrong here, may be some already do something for OSS.
Yes, not impressed and very very concerned about its deployment, especially after the poorly implemented gun-registry . There is a related story here . Sometimes, "developed" nations get it wrong too!
Linux needs some serious work in this area.
I have also seen words like [T]he being used in sentences. What is going on?
Thanks a bunch,
Cb..

Russians just need more organization.
