Yes, in Canada (Toronto in particular), I see Netscape and not IE installed on the old public library computers. I guess when Mozilla is mentioned, netscape is implicitly included.
You really explained very very well. In my situation, I am just doing the basic office work. Real loads on the system are seen when backing up later at 1130 hours. I even do not know whether the apps are written to take advantage of quad or more CPUs. Any way, thanks a lot.
Really, I know this is off topic, but what are the advantages of having more CPUs on a computer system? I have been approached by various vendors explaining to me why a system with dual CPUs would be better. Wouldn't I be able to harness the same performance by using more and more RAM or just a more powerful CPU?
...is the mindset! Among the Joe Sixpacks, the Internet can only be accessed by Internet Explorer! The name says it all. I had my boss here who essentially admired my MDK 10.0, but when he sat infront of the system, he asked, "So where is Internet Explorer?" I retorted "You can use other browsers like M-o-z-i-l-l-a, F-i-r-e-f-o-x and K-o-n-q...". Then he aksed..."And those are names of applications?". "Their names are difficult to remember...!" Anyway, it reminded me of a previous boss who after booting his system with a non-system disk, said to me over the telephone..."My computer does not have Microsoft!" I decided to ask him to remove the disk in the floppy drive and asked something unrelated to the problem at hand...I then say, "Did you remember to back-up [the photos] yesterday?". He then asked..." You mean the computer would somehow explode or short-circuit"?
Yes, that's right except for those in the desert! I imagine every river deep enough can be seeded with these turbines. As the river flows, it water is passed through a giant pipe that has these blades. The blades turn generating electricity. Here no body would really need falls onto which to construct a dam. But maintenance would be a problem in my view. But before I posted this, I talked to m\one of my buddies who told me that the water current several metres below the surface of a river flows much more slowly or not at all. Any slashdotter know can confirm this?
That's KDE 3.1.2? Did I read right? If so, it's not worth a bother. TurboLinux grabs the 2.6 series kernel and then uses the old KDE? Where have these people been?
Yes, the Russians have been doing this for years. They undoubtedly have the best engineered and reliable systems in the world. The Americans now rely on Russian rockets. Their Buran (shuttle clone) landed withing 5 feet of its intended target...more accurate than anyone has ever achieved. They retired the MIR successfully with an accuracy of 0.5km when most western observers were worried that it would fall on them. They have the biggest and heaviest flying aircraft in the world. It will still dwarf the A-380. It once carried over 120 SUVs over Sudan to Entebbe when there was the great rally. I had the opportunity of seeing their ambitions on paper. The problem is funding. Best of all, they are darn cheap, dollar wise. Let hi team up with them.
Yes, that's why I will continue using Konqueror on Linux [for now]. BTW since Konqueror is written using QT which can be used to deploy cross-platform apps, why don't we have Konqueror for Windows?
Yes, they did [voting against their governments]. But the result is legal and binding, isn't it? If it is,...then, by Holland wanting to reverse its decision, I have a feeling that is legal too...right? It seems we [Free Software Lovers] will be caught up in a legal quagmire, defined as "A difficult or precarious situation; a predicament". I hope the odds are with us.

You are a geek? Can you define what a geek is please; I am an African too currently living in the "most advanced" country in the world. I agree with you 100%. My grand-parents at 89 and 93 yrs cannot understand why one would need electricity only to dole out a fee every month if they can visit the bush and get "free" firewood. Water is collected from a nearby stream. It is pure and unpolluted by development found here, were one is advised NOT to even take a bathe in the water around. Medicines are extracted from shrubs...radio is solar powered and very simple. I want to convince them to get a cell phone which I will pay for, but I know I will have trouble convincing them.....In a nearby village, one white man visited and never went back to the UK! I could go on and on, but this will be off-topic!
This question might seem stupid for the seasoned geek but how exactly is the setup? OK, can some slashdotter inform us whether this computer setup is running some form of ltsp? Or is it running a NoMachine found here NoMahine.com ? But I do not think so again, because I see these 3 NVIDIA TNT2 32MB PCI VGA Cards probably hooked onto the System Unit. As slashdotters, I think we should be interested in knowing how the display gets its stuff and how exactly the OS gets shared. What about these cables to the monitors and keyboards or other peripherals? The standard ones seem to be short, i.e, users would have to be cramped very close together. I just do not get it!

Disclaimer: I do not touch Fedora because it will not serve me well on Multimedia as compared to MDK or SuSE. Now, for me, Linux is just OK except for fonts. I do not like anti-aliased fonts because they hurt my eyes, and they also look blurry!
However, when I disabled anti-aliasing the resulting fonts looked terrible! Why...I have no clue.
I must say this too: Installing the Yahoo Messenger was OK via the rpm and I also found its fonts OK with or without anti-aliasing.
I wanted help till a regular good geek posted this email. This email, lives in my in-box permanently in case I need it. SuSE and MDK did not do well on fonts. So Slashdotters, if any of you can provide a better way of installing [good] fonts go right ahead. Meanwhile the geek mentioned above posted the following to help me improve fonts. I have to say it worked wonders for me. Here you go...
Isn't it possible to route the output of the DVD unit to another recorder that would burn the film onto [video] tape or DVD? I am sure the graphics guys at the GIMP and MPlayer can find ways arround this new preventive measure.
Let me say on the out-set: I am not impressed. Since when has Africa been a country? This is what I find wrong in the "Western" Press. When ever something about a country in Africa is being discussed, The word "Africa" is used instead of the country. Africa is a continent with more than 50 countries, each with different peoples. I will give an example of Uganda which with is 24 million people, has more than 40 tribes. Each of these tribes is different in itself. I sympathize with those that fall into the topic's fraud.
As an African living in Canada, I hear Africa being lumped as a single entity when referring to a country in this vast place! Africa is unique in that it has climates ranging from temperate to tropical to semi-arid.
Back to the point: I agree that this piece has been very very poorly written! But it's worth the read.
Why don't slashdoters define what meta-data is in the first place? Google's define: metadata lists not less than 20 definitions. Are we talking about "data about data"?
But I cannot have KDE without Konqueror! Why? Somebody says I am not forced to use it as a browser...but nobody prevents anyone from using Mozilla/Firefox/Opera etc on M$ either. I do not get it! Am I stupid?
...as a dy trader, there is no way I could manage without Java enabled on my system. What I did though, to move the entire java directoty to a windows partition from where I mount the executable. This helps me a lot since, when ever a [new] distro is out, I do not have to re-install Java. I simply specify my old windows based path to apps like Konqeror and the rest, then life continues. All in all, Java is a blessing to me.

1)Login as root
2) Download: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/freetype/freety pe-2.1.9.tar.bz2?...
3)Unbzip and untar the file.
4) Uncomment line 439 in freetype-2.1.9/include/freetype/config/ftoption.h
5) Go back to the freetype-2.1.9 directory
6) ./configure --prefix=/usr
7) make
8) rm -rf /usr/lib/*freetype* (be careful here!)
9) make install
10) Grab Microsoft's core fonts and stick them in /usr/share/fonts
11) Start up KDE, go to the font preferences panel, and turn *off* anti-aliasing. Make sure to select the MS fonts as your UI fonts
My CAD 0.02
No...! There was Word 4.3.
