Most users aren't patient enough to deal with a buggy product
I think a few lines of code would prevent Maps from shutting off the screen. Sounds easy to me. My numerous requests have gone unanswered. Needless to say, I avoid it.
... I find that the very pleasant full-screen text-message window I used to like with Google Voice is now one I can't figure out how to reach,...
Is it just me that finds some Google apps quite disappointing? Let's look at its Maps:
Why does the screen turn off [by default] once the app is in use? Waze doesn't do this! How does Google expect us to use this app? I can't be bothered hitting the screen to prevent it from darkening on me!
I have always found its messaging apps just plain ugly. Am I alone? Google should take a look at Viber, Go SMS and many others who have done things right in my opinion.
but I would imagine that they could much more easily create a solar grid than dealing with the nasty politics surrounding nuclear, if energy was the primary concern. A bit fishy.
I agree with your sentiment. But wait!
First, its their legal right to nuclear energy. Second, they (Iran), are a sovereign nation and as such, are free to pursue their ambitions for whatever reason. Further, if we take a look at what "the greatest democracy" in the world has done, they have wasted over a trillion dollars on a plane that just doesn't measure up! This is despite having huge deficits.
Question for you: Why do ou think that their only reason for pursuing nuclear energy is for energy alone? Why? Couldn't be also because they want to learn? Heck, much of what makes today's life what it is, is that those who lived before us did a lot of research in fields that one could argue weren't meant to make Joe Six Pack's life easier. But we all benefit as time goes by, don't we?
Can someone point me to the relevant oral argument in this case? There's something, when one listens to an oral argument, that you'll never get from anything written. Thanks.
A lack of evidence means that the investigation has now ended.
I find it hard if not impossible to believe the Germans could not find any evidence. Heck, we aren't talking about some banana republic here. Or are we?
The more plausible reason is that they, (the Germans), didin't want what they have done displayed out in the open for all to see. Think of this as the "discovery phase" in a US court trial.
What sometimes toubles me is the we (read the USA), then attribute henious, undemocratic, autocratic, dictatorial, tyrannical, despotic behaoiurs to "those other regimes" around the world.
A rising tide will lift all boats," he added. "It's the beginning of an amazing moment for our industry."
Anyone remember Apple Pay with the already available credit card information? Well, according to some, it looks like a dud already. This could well be the same because I for one, have no intention of ever being a subscriber. I am sure I am not alone.
everyone else in the launch industry insisted it made no economic sense to try to recover and reuse the first stage of their rockets.
Yes, that was then - long ago. Things are different now. For instance, who in the 90s, knew you could get 8GB of computer storage at less than $15 those days? It's reality now.
"...and will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace,"
I am sure they will investigate. What I am not sure about is whether, "hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace" means anything if history is to be believed.
I beg to be enlightened: What has my the [mighty] USA done in the past, that should make me think holding accountable in the case of China means anything really?
Now, remember we as a country, do the same stuff to other countries regularly.
It is arbitrary actions like this that cause Android's fragmentation problems.
One more:
It is arbitrary actions like this that contribute to companies running out of business.
But let me ask: How can a [reputable] company like LG think that vitriol, that could potentially be a consequence of action like this will, be positive to its image? How?
Look folks, I have avoided Google Maps on Android for one major reason: The app shuts off the screen, while in use! Imagine that for a second. This has been an ongoing thing since the very beginning.
Consequently, for Maps, I use Waze which exhibits no such annoyance.
The "consume fewer calories" diet only works if you are able to keep it up for weeks or months, something most people are unable to do.
I would like you to tell me what most people are able to do most of the time and for a long time. Like I said, if one tried the MO I outlined, I can guarantee 100% success. Yes, That is 100%.
Forget all those so called diet plans.. The only thing I know that works is actually eating less. Many of my friends will not agree, but I wonder how one can gain weight by putting less calories in their system.
I have come to the conclusion that a way to specify search criteria should now prominently be featured on that Google search page.
I am aware that I can specify these criteria after a search has been performed. What I need is to be accorded a chance NOT to see results I am not interested in (like tweets), at all.
I am saddened and feel I want to kick something. From the summary: -
"...But the district now says the combined tech didn't meet their needs , and they want their money back..."
Emphasis mine.
Is it just me who sees something wrong here? So, no feasibility study was done? Who approves these things? It was very evident that this whole thing wouldn't work. Look, we hire lots of foreigners in this country, who do so well not because they were using these educational gimmicks wherever they came from, but because most of them put pen to paper and wrote something.
Heck, our students can't even write [English] well despite it being their first language! Then there is the damage done by the so called Common Core. What is wrong with these United States? You know what? When it comes to the way we teach, I am not surprised the products of our educational system go on to make such shortsighted decisions. God save us.
In developing countries, the upper half (maybe) can afford it, but the lower half live without even reliable electricity, much less a computer to grant them access to rich information/education/entertainment/etc.
While I largely agree with you, what I have seen also is that our [western] definition of development isn't necessarily other people's definition.
Case in point: We may be really technologically developed but the way of life that comes with the development has also brought with it serious issues of mental illness and a breakdown in family. I remember being in one village and the elders there told me categorically, that they do not need electricity or running water. It *IS* their choice. I was baffled! The business of refrigeration was foreign to them though some liked it.The elders were not sure how to service the equipment after we left. They didn't like the whole concept of relying on other people's tech. So, values are different.
I see a problem for us Americans. With Russia's lead, some Asian countries are beginning to conduct trade without the dollar. If this spreads, we as USA are done. The days of dominating currency markets won't last for ever. That will be ugly.
And yet over these past five decades, that same laggard country has dominated the world of science, technology, research and innovation.
When I travel especially in Asia, (read China, South Korea, Singapore etc), I find better employment of technology than in USA right from the airport! This technology isn't necessarily American at all!
What I find we Americans have, is the view that we are at the epitome of the best. You can't compare the subway system in NY to that in Shanghai in terms of deployed tech for example! NY is in the dark ages. I know because engineers from NY go to Shanghai to "learn" how things are done on such scale.
The Koreans have come to dominate ship building not using western tech, but their home grown solutions to enormous problems.
What I find is that we in America are really one confident lot, right from school kids. We also have a spirit of "self congratulation." But trust me, those Asian folks beat us in many ways.
'Facebook's misdeeds might never have come to light had it decided that simply stealing BRG's intellectual property was enough,' the company said in its lawsuit, filed Monday at the federal district court in San Jose, California.
Some bank executives acknowledged that they were were so scared of Apple that they didn't speak up.
And such officials are still employed? In my opinion, such employees are good candidates for immediate termination.
But wait! We're gonna hear about the usual vitriol from these banks. I will go something like this:
"We take [the] security of our operations and clients' accounts with us very seriously."
"We process in excess of several billion transactions daily and although fraud is part of our industry, it constitutes less than 0.1% of our business." "Our bank is committed to providing the best security there is in this business..."
Many would think if this term referring to folk who write code. This is OK for me. My problem though, would be how to address technically competent people who make nonsensical decisions.
I remember politely fighting GNOME folks over design decisions they took around the `Open File` dialog box, only to be slammed with what was referred to as "Won't Fix" because it is what they called a "Deliberate Design Decision." No wonder GNOME suffered soon after.
and finding really good people and hanging onto them is very difficult.
...and finding really good people and hanging onto them is very difficult, if in addition to not giving them freedom, you do not pay them as well as the competition...
...However, if any of those other countries did the same thing, it wouldn't be OK. In fact, we would be thanking God for the USA and its guarantee of "freedom & liberty" - the Snowden saga not withstanding...
Well said, thanks a lot. Where can I find a list of organizations that lobby for the ordinary folk? Can we have these organizations grouped by subject matter?
How for instance, is it OK for members of congress to have a medical insurance scheme that members of a certain party (that I will not mention), find so toxic to be of [any] benefit to the ordinary man and woman? I would like to know.

Just leave them alone.
Ask Slashdot: Are Post-Install Windows Slowdowns Inevitable?
When patches and updates together end up being larger than the original [OEM] install, you can see why the slowdown is inevitable.
Sounds easy to see why. No?

Wouldn't it make more sense to compare it to an A380?
No, maybe the Antonov 225 as it's bigger than the A380.
