Given this scenario, if users do not upgrade their router for a significant period of time, and/or configure the routers in a insecure manner, I would not apportion much blame on the supplier.
All routers have had vulnerabilities. The question is how quickly the manufacturer fixes them, if the vulnerabilities were a result of malice or incompetence, is what I would use to judge the manufacturers. And Mikrotik would get one of the top ranks on these parameters. The article does not bring out these details.
Peplink works like magic - failing over very gracefully. The same can be achieved on Linux through network interface bonding, or on pfSense through Link Aggregation. You would need an intermediate server on the internet that supports the same. VPS servers are cheap and suitable for this purpose.

The article does not state of all images would be cached automatically even if you have not read your mail. It only says that images would be served through a Google proxy server, which caches the images.
So if Google proxies and caches the images when you open the mail, there is no protection added from marketers, except for the fact that Google can scan the images for exploits.
And if Google proxies and caches the images as soon as the service receives the mail, marketers can verify if the address is a valid gmail address or not by just sending mails and waiting for Google to cache the image. Expect more spam if this is the case.
There will be true protection from email tracking only if Google caches the images in all emails it receives, even if the email address is invalid - and that would increase the load on Google servers quite a bit.
Such emulators have been around for long where one can use apps of one platform on another (Wine anyone). Whats the news here...? I can understand why someone would want to play an Android game or use some such app that is not available for the PC using this. But why would one want to run a browser inside Android when a perfectly good browser could be used directly from Windows. The novelty of it would wear away soon I guess.
BTW, Bluestacks runs Android apps on both Windows and Mac machines. WindowsAndroid can claim to be better than Bluestacks when they get their platform running on Mac *and* Linux too! Encryption is not going away. Any half good programmer can whip together a 3-DES or RSA routine together - why, many programming languages even have ready APIs for it.

The Indian Law permits the Government to ask for the encryption key. Now, if someone asked for an encryption key to a SSL session, pray tell me how it can be retrieved... In the GSM world, all you have to do is try your SIM on a different device, and you know if it is the network or the device. I prefer manufacturers who get users the features they need in their handsets, and telcos who look after networks. All artificial restrictions go away when you combine this with number portability.
There is no shortage of bundled and locked handsets and plans in the GSM world too. So subsidizing upfront purchase prices for the particular segment of buyers is very much possible, and happens quite a bit.
The CDMA platform may be more spectrum efficient, but IMHO, GSM wins out overall - from an user perspective at least.
ASUS Eee Box PC B202 runs Ubuntu Server like a dream. Have configured it as a PDC for my Windows Boxes, and trying to get Free Radius working for my Wifi network. Have got BIND, Squid running to provide the caching I need. Have not got started with the filtering, but thats the next stop after Free Radius. And VPN so that I can get back into home when I am travelling. Syslogd will also be nice to log my Internet Traffic. But that would be all I require. (My backups are on a DNS 323, so I dont plan messing with it. Anyway, this Eee box has only 160GB, hardly enough for the task at hand)
It sits as a headless box in a corner and I just SSH in when I need it. Pretty, and pretty impressive for the small box it is. Atom N270, 1GB RAM is enough for what I do - CPU hardly ever spikes beyond 10-15%, and RAM is more like 25% peak that I have seen when I am logged in and swap does not really get touched.
I have only one wish - a distro where all this is preconfigured or works out of the box...
For those in power who know how to wield it, such laws simply become an excuse to harass anyone and everyone as they please. In microbiology, while trying to grow bacterial cultures, there is something called as the limiting resource - sometime the Glucose added to the culture, sometimes the nitrogen-nutrient added. And the culture grows till that nutrient is exhausted. Or it has exhausted the ability to dispose waste. Some nutrients remain unused, unless the mixture was so precisely balanced at the beginning.

Used to play both Audio and Video from my computer on my TV thru the WiFi interface (also has Ethernet capability - but my living room is not wired up). I recently bought a home theatre. It now plays all that through the HDMI connection on my home theatre. It even has an USB port, and can play content directly from the USB. Catches internet radio too - the choice is limited to a couple of stations that the company appears to have tied up with. Does not handle DivX yet. However, do remember that not everything can be reduced to a dollar value (The value of a clean environment, cost of drug addiction, or the value of life, for instance). We may even be spending a very valuable resource without knowing the true value of it. A century later, if it is dicovered that a herb could have cured Aids, and we had simply burnt it to extinction this century because it was 'cheap', who is to be blamed?
We are borrowing heavily from our future generations when we use non-renewable resources, or do not clean up after ourselves.
As you rightly say, Markets represent the alternatives chosen by the society. But legislation we have represents the choices we have made as a society as to where we go. Such legislation happens only when the individuals in the society recognize the issues involved and choose to act responsibly. (e.g. rules about what we do with Antartica). The participants are the cause, and the market is the effect. Not the other way around. The market cannot predict or account for innovations ahead of the innovation.

If there is a chance for water there, there may also be a chance for life. Hitting that area in this manner may just reduce that probability to zero.
