I have been following Evolution for some time now. I have tried every release since beta 1, which was more like pre-alpha quality IMO. But, it's really starting to shape up quickly now. Beta 5 (the latest) fixes SO many bugs I could never name them all.
For anyone looking for an Outlook/Eudora replacement, this is it.
Personally, I use the Mozilla mail client because it's got mail and news together with the same interface, and I really don't need a Calendar, Contact list, etc.
I was just joking! You know all that stuff about calendars running on the Wall and Desk platform, that wasn't serious, it was a rather pathetic(apparently!) attempt at humor.
I understand the advantages of a company-wide messaging system...
Get a REAL calendar, and a notepad. They're very useful, they are fully supported on the Desk and Wall platform, and work just as well on other platforms. They're very cheap, and there are many companies that sell them, so you're not locked into one vendor's continued upgrade cycle forever.
Also, best of all, they are very resistant to virii. Really, the only virii than can infect them are co-workers who can't keep thier hands off things, who should really be fired anyway.
They are also very easy to find. In fact, just about any shopping center of mall will carry them.
9 years ago I thought of this all the time. Everytime I had to piss and missed something on T.V., I thought, damn, I wish I had an always on VCR that constantly kept like.5 hours of T.V. "buffered" so I could pause the T.V. and not miss anything.
It's a really, really, really, really simple, obvious, non-novel concept. Actually, before I even knew what a fucking Tivo did, I started working on a Linux box to do this.
I guess I'm just a freaking genius then, since this is supposedly such a novel concept. I should have patented this 10 years ago when I was 13... right...
I guess the music industry doesn't like selling music to me. I often like to check out the lyrics of a band I'm interested in to see what they're all about, sadly, that is often more difficult today with them going after these type of sites, therefore, I buy less music.
This is the same deal as (g)napster. I absolutely hate listening to the radio, so the Internet is the only way for me to listen to something before I buy it. The music industry is making this more difficult, therefore, I buy less music.
When lyrics were more easily available and MP3s were more easy to get a hold of, I bought more music.
It never ceases to amaze me how hostile this industry is to it's best customers...
I made no such claims at all! Where the fuck did you get that? Just like I said, YOU are looking as hard as possible for anything that might even have the remote possibility of maybe perhaps in some small way be a sign of bigotry. Sir, you need to embrace reality.
Perhaps, just maybe, there were mostly white people who tried out for the parts on the show. Who knows, you certainly don't, so maybe you should just STFU for now.
The original series had a diverse cast on purpose, to further a good cause. In the shows that followed, the best people were chosen for the job, except Voyager where perhaps Janeway was specifically cast because they wanted a female captain.
I'm not a bigot, I was raised without even realizing there was tension among races in this country. You probably don't believe that though, because I don't personally go looking for bigotry in ever detail of everything.
"Mm. Note the implicit assumptions being smuggled in here: that it is reasonable to expect that "the best people for the job" will be mostly white males (rather than being uncorrelated with race and sex"
Wow, you're really, really trying hard to label me a bigot for disagreeing with you on this, but you've ended up just pulling stupid shit out of your ass.
"For reference, do you also consider the complaints in other threads of redneck stereotyping"
Yes, I do consider that to be whining. There are plenty of shotgun toting redneck farmers, just as there are plenty of cases where there are mostly white people (and no gays) in any given place...
Perhaps the creators of the show just picked the best people for the job and were unconcerned with "affirmative action"-type bullshit.
FWIW, I am no bigot and have absolutely no tolerance for bigotry. However, I also have absolutely no tolerance for people who actively look for bigotry in every little thing forcing people to be wary of who they choose for a job, etc for fear of presenting the appearance of the slightest miniscule possibility of being a bigot.
You're assuming I am a Libertarian/Conservative, while I am not. I find most right wing nuts equally offensive, as they tend to try to force their beliefs upon others just like extreme liberals.
When someone complains when there isn't more ethnic diversity or gay people on a television show, I consider that to be whiny, especially in light of the fact that ST has always been very ethnically diverse.
Oh no, they're more worried about trying to create a good show than trying to be PC to pander to all the whiny wacko liberals who think it's their right to force their views down everyone's throat.
Can we please not bastardize everything in existence just to make a few whiners happy?
Aren't college students supposed to be adults? Why is it that college students are treated like children? I know, I know, most of them do act like children, but treating them like children just reinforces that.
I say let them fail. Fail enough classes because they're not paying attention and maybe they'll start to take things more seriously.
Another great move by a PC manufacturer! Who needs the best chips on the market based on cost/performance anyway?
It never ceases to amaze me, the utter shit that PC manufacturers sell to people. Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc., sell absolute complete shit. They're always trying to make it difficult to upgrade, or they're fucking up Windows and making it incompatible with Office(yes, Compaq did this once... talk about an oversight), or combining good CPUs with shit for ram etc...
If you ask me, the only way to go when purchasing a PC is to buy the parts you want and put it together yourself. I have never seen an off-the-shelf PC that was something I would want to use.
That is really quite stupid. If you read further comments, this issue has already been resolved in an acceptable manner by both parties. I don't think it's necessary to boycott kernel 2.4.10. Christ that sounds ridiculous...
I wish everyone would stop being so overdramatic, it's almost making me sympathize with the bullies that used to pick on computer nerds like us ; )
Personally, I would ask for an OS that I was allowed to install on more than 1 machine without having to pay 1/4 the cost of the hardware that it's going to run on. I would ask for an OS that I don't have to call up some company and get some key in order to install. I would ask for an OS that I can install on a new machine that I build myself without having to buy another license. I would ask for an OS that doesn't intentionally break old software and ODBC drivers that my company needs to operate. I would ask for an OS that I don't have to purchase from a company that has a reputation for doing audits that cost large companies millions of dollars and weeks of wasted time. I would ask for an OS where ALL the APIs are published so I am on even footing when writing competing software. I would ask for an OS that isn't developed by a company that uses licensing terms to try to silence criticism of said company. I would ask for an OS with development tools that are affordable for me to use for hobby programming. I would ask for an OS NOT made by a company that puts restrictions on what type of software/licensing terms are acceptable to develop with their software. I would ask for an OS that doesn't limit, by licensing terms, how many clients I am allowed to deal with at a time, etc.
Personally, I would as for an OS that isn't Windows XP.
This is so excellent, continued support of gaming on Linux despite the fact that there is absolutely no money to be made with it.
Although, this port was done by one guy at id, and in just a few days from start to finish, so maybe this particular linux port will generate a better than negative revenue stream.
Hopefully they will release a Linux version of the final product, and hopefully they will have a way to gauge how many people use it, and hopefully everyone who uses Linux and plays these kinds of games will buy it. hint hint, please drop a little money in support of gaming on Linux if you care about it at all ; )
Damn, michael is SO fucking dumb. You have no fucking idea what you're talking about, so STFU. Your little comments are a pathetic sign that your journalism skills need some serious work.
Please, STFU and let people who have a better understanding of what they're talking about comment.
The U.S. hasn't even FIRE A FUCKING SHOT YET! They may very well really botch it, but until we even know WHAT THE FUCK THEY'RE DOING, STFU!

They have not, officially anyway, declared a jihad. However, Usoma bin Laden, and all who follow him, have.
Here, read the interview with bin Laden, it's all right there.
Not only is bin Laden pissed at the U.S. being mostly Christian, he's pissed because we aren't allowing them to literally exterminate the Jews in Israel. But it goes farther than exterminating the Jews in Israel, he really wants to exterminate all non-Muslims around the world.
And for all the Liberal Europeans blaming U.S. foreign policy on the whole mess, watch out, he doesn't like you much better and wants you dead too.
note: I'm not condoning U.S. foreign policy, there's plenty I don't agree with, however, preventing other middle-eastern countries from taking over Israel and exterminating the Jews is not one of them.
Peoples, EVERY SINGLE BIT OF TECHNOLOGY ___CAN___ be used by the government for draconian purposes. The arguments agains face recognition are all assuming that the policies regarding face recognition will be draconian in measure, but if you can argue that, then you should arugue that the government should not be able to use computers, because they _CAN_ have databases of our information, guns, because they _CAN_ be used to kill innocent people, etc, etc.
It's the same argument that we fight against that is used to rob us of our rights when dealing with copyright on digital media.
Just because technology CAN be used for something bad doesn't mean it will be or should be banned because of the possibility, again, it is the same argument that most of us are so much against.
That would surely be a software issue. What I mean is, the system would surely alert authorities whenever a suspected terrorist is spotted, who would then review the images and see what took place. You may be questioned, but that's not different than anything today. Today, if you are spotted in a confrontation with a known criminal, you will surely be questioned.
I hate to be forced to point out the obvious, but the Linux "community" is not some homogenized group of like-minded peoples working together for the exact same goals. The Linux "community" consists of millions of people ranging from professionals in film studios to pimply faced nerds who hang out in the computer club in school talking about how much ram memory the computer their mom bought them has.
Then we also have RMS and ESR, self appointed (GNU/)Linux advocates who are so out of touch with reality that one scares people with how big a gun nut he is and the other lives in his office at a university and is affriad of water, both of which can't stop arguing for 2 seconds in the name of furthering some of the shared goals they have.
note: I still respect them both, but I think they could do more good if they'd just learn to friggin calm down

"It's a patent on the concept of freezing a live feed and buffering the incoming picture"
Isn't that "pausing" live T.V.?
This is a type of pausing, so, you're wrong...
