I met Rob at a Linux conference in Atlanta around 1998-99...
We started talking and he was extremely excited and explaining about Slashdot's amazing rise.
He kept saying... "I'm "Phat" and sticky.. I'm Phat and sticky!!"
The "Phat" was the cool factor...and the sticky was how people just seemed to hang around on Slashdot all day. Obviously, it really helped Slashdot's value and worth.
Rob also showed me a picture of his lovely wife and told me how glad he was to be with her.
I left that conversation with a big smile on my face and hoped we would meet again soon.
Back in the bust of 2000-2001 my brother ditched IT in favor of going back to school to become a radiation therapist (cancer treatment). It took him about 4 years to complete this transformation and today is he starting his new job! I am quite proud of him.
I considered doing something similar by becoming a clinical neurophysiologist. You assist surgeons to prevent damage to nerves during proceedures. It would have yielded a MS. I declined to do that in favor of going back to IT one last time, at a "Telcom Giant", and earn my MBA instead.
Now before you scoff at my choice let me explain my rationale. I knew that healthcare would be booming for some time to come. I also knew that tech related work in the healthcare sector would also fall to global outsourcing. See radiology, etc... You can imagine that all manner of people will be rushing into this new bonanza much like the 90s internet craze.
The best bet you have IMHO is to create unique skills that facilitate entrepreneurial activities effectively. You can bet that the companies you work for will keep an eye on lowering costs(You!). You need to be your own boss to have any type of control over your future. Think of how many bosses you worked for that you actually though were better at that than you?
I'm not saying an MBA is necessary. I destroyed two start ups before going to business school. I hope that trend does not continue. What I am saying is that you absolutely have to invest in yourself now more than ever before. There are plenty of hungry workers overseas that are now closer to you...
This healthcare story is very depressing. By and large, government and healthcare are both cost centers IMHO. Keep raising your costs and see how well you compete in the global economy.
Work hard, learn hard, squeeze the maximum yield from life.
Let me explain.... my parents would often lament the state of our country. I would inevitably come to the conclusion based on discussions that they have turned over a totally screwed up country to the generation(s) that follow. When I suggested that to them they were not pleased... but I maintain it is the truth.
They allowed this nonsense to fester for quite a while... the impact of their apathy goes way beyond this specific case.
I just don't see how th US can maintain any type of global leadership in the future, let alone hold its ground with the legacy we have to deal with now. This crap is like quicksand!!
It would be nice if Sun hired the Jython team as well.:) Consider that they would then have two very popular scripting languages nicely supported under their portfolio.
I just don't think they are taking.NET seriously enough.
You do realize that the main purpose of the MRI is to put a "moment" or torque on the bound cellular water? When the water returns to its rest state it emits radiation that is detected for the pretty pictures. You might be feeling that effect as there is vastly more water in your body than metal ions.
Admins are not necessarily coder are they? You have to be a fairly savy developer to be able to use Dtrace. You ultimately need to fix the code and need someone to modify it.
Having said that...I am sure it will get easier to use in the future. I for one welcome all the help I can get. Admins included!!
I spent a considerable amount of time trying to do a real world IVR engine in python with C extensions to the driver library. It was to be multithreaded... not multi process. I COULD NOT get it to work correctly... and yes I know about the "Allow threads" directive for the C calls. I even asked the amazing brain trust at the Pycon in 2003 what could be done. My conclusion was that no one else was trying to do what I was:(
The Global Interpreter Lock seems to me to be part of the problem. I think the Jython implementation worked with "native" Java threads.... I wonder if IronPython uses native.NET threads?
I like the promise of rapid application development in python but it needs to be able to take advantage of multiprocessor/threaded CPU architectures to be useful to me. I know you can use the multi process approach but frankly, this is a wart that rubs me the wrong way.
I was doing some low voltage wiring repair at a high end lighting retailer. Turns out that their shrink was staggering before they simly installed some video cameras in the wharehouse. Some of them were not even functional, but you could not tell which. Their employee theft problem went away over night. The threat.. implied or real.. of watching employees is often enough to encourage desired behavior. It is a direct application of game theory.
I guess some clever data miners will have a field day but really.... how many feeds can you keep track of. I don't want to be that connected to that many people on that level. What a hassle:)
I keep older computers around with the vague intention of actually playing some of those "good ole games" when I have some free time. Turns out my free time is getting harder to come by... I may never have a chance to play with this cool DOS.
I am just amazed at how complicated life is getting. My mother is in her 70s and would have NO clue what the heck that warning even means. She did surprise me once by asking about a firewall!
Pretty soon you are going to need a staff of people in India to help you run your busy life in America.
I have to agree here. I think the biggest "thing" stolen is the victims time. It would have taken some amount of effort to have something worth stealing.
These situations are sure to be on the increase. I am interested to see how they progress.
He identified that dehydration elevates histamine levels. Higher levels contribute directly to pain. Quite clever really...
He may have said some wacky things... as do most docs that figure out one aspect of physiology and assume they have the whole figured out. In this regard, he is typical
I just don't see how Python is going to make it big with such poor threading. This is quickly becoming the era of multi-core, multi-thread systems. I hate to say it but Java does have that covered. Sun's new T1000 and T2000 servers are targeted at this important and growing segment.
I suppose you could use Jython and get the benefits that way... (it is much slower and way behind C Python).
Before you flame me, let me just say that I spent a great deal of effort trying to build a threaded telephony server in Python and it was just not possible.
You are joking I hope. I know teens feel it isn't fair. Too bad. They have their whole lives to smoke, drink, watch porn, and enjoy ultra violent content. I am not an anarchist. I am not a fan of government control either.
Your worry about morailty is interesting. Is it moral to try to prevent measurable damage that would be caused to these children? I think it is reasonable to try.
I suspect you missed the fact that you can vote when you are 18. Why don't you let 8 year olds vote? Can you seriously argue that maturity does not matter and children can make decisions for themselves?
I completely agree. I am quite sure that the under 18 crowd cannot buy pornographic magazines or see movies rated NC-17. Oh, let us not forget they can't by cigaretts either.
Youth (teens) simply are not mature enough to be treated as adults.
I know that ultimately the parents are responsible. However, I see no reason to exclude video games. Is sex and violence good for minors or isn't it? Lets at least be consistent.
I know all the academic types would scoff at such a plan, but it may be very easy to generate a respectable amount of income. Ticket sales should not be restricted to members only.
The logistics could be hammered out with endless blue ribbon committee meetings.
I used to be a member of the IEEE, I felt the dues were way too high for what you got.
Just a thought. Go ahead and throw your stones now.
Heh, I went to U of R. Earned my BS and MS EE(92). One of the main reasons I chose Rochester was an issue of Scientific American published in 1985 which was telling of the wonderous miracles to be seen at the LLE. At the time I was a Naval Nuclear Reactor operator who won an ROTC scholarship.
I never actually did any work there, never worked in the nuclear field again, and only used the LLE to park my car when going back to Rochester for home comming. What a bummer.
Good Luck with your reasearch my friend. I wish you all the best success.

Remember that all errors do not have the same severity or impact the user experience in the same way.
That could seems pretty low considering how many people have had their hands in it "cleaning it up".
I would be proud to be a part of that team. Let me just say GOOD JOB!

Dumb Asses. They just need to go to the goodwill and get a complete.. tricked out vintage system of their own. Data loss my eye.
I guess some clever data miners will have a field day but really.... how many feeds can you keep track of. I don't want to be that connected to that many people on that level. What a hassle :)

I am also an athiest by the way.
Does anyone where we can get a free poster of the Periodic Table or better yet, a chart of the nuclides! It would be great for home schooling :)

I went to Rochester. It is certianly not liberal in comarison to places like Emory. I agree that RIT is more blue collar and down to earth.
Nuff Said
Ack... she is nasty.... she lookls like a dried up skeleton. Imagine having sex with that desicated mummy. Bah.
