    I have been hearing this fusion is just around the corner crap for at least the last 20 years. Even my own school (University of Rochester) had a massive laser lab for doing fusion research. I had more than a passing interest in this since I was a Navy Nuclear Operator.

    Wake me when they get it working.

    Well since you asked....

    I suspect that the old supplies are using simple linear components. The typical design calls for voltage regulation to be done by an active element. This causes some(a bunch) waste as heat disipation.

    Newer technique: switching power supplies. The output is actually across a capacitor. It's voltage is sampled and if it diverges from the desired, the pulse width of the square wave it is fed by is modulated. Essentially, you give the capacitor more charge if the voltage drops. Capacitors tend to resist a change in voltage across them. There is less heat lost using this scheme since the pulse is either on or off.

    I agree. I find the show a nice distraction from my totally crappy life ;) I mean what are all of the complaniers really bitching about? Do they think this series is going to change their lives; make them rich or popular with the ladies? It ain't gonna happen. I take the show for what it is. Simple entertainment. They make argue that, it is, in fact, not entertaining. To them I say "...So don't watch."

    I really don't mind if these sci-fi production companies chooose to film in Canada because it is cheaper. However, I really get freakin irritated when their Canadian actor's hideous accents wreck the mood. I mean these are supposed to be Texans, and people from Las Vegas. It sounded like I was watching CNBC.

    OMG, I just came from the Alumni Weekend up there. What a small world. We used to have problem with security when I was living in Phase. We lived in Slater (top floor) and would torment the frat (Phi tau) with a water baloon sling shot whenever we got bored. They would send up their pledges to try and screw with us, but those door have great locks on them. We also build a home made 500 watt per channel amp, with big assed speaker (tm) that we would blast till late into the night. The cops would come by becuase people across the river would complain.

    Ahh... those were the days. Have a pint at the OLD TOAD for me dude.

    With all of the assaults on music and such.... it seems like now is the time to scoop up some nice used analog gear. You have your reel to reel tape, audio cassette, etc.
    Ultimately, the sound still has to become analog before you can hear it. (This may change in the future I'm sure) IT may not be ideal but at least I will have my music without some company breathing down my neck.

    I would also add that SAP-DB's replication amounts to bulk data loadign and unloading with it's Replication Manager. Umm... I prefer the Replication model that Microsoft SQL server uses where there are publishers and subscribers, and it proceeds aomewhat automatically once set up. I mean calling bulk data load/unload replication boggles my mind. It must be a German thing ;)
