  1. Big reason is the maint. on The Continuing Death of Pinball · · Score: 1

I was at a Video Game Trade Show in Vegas last year. Happened to go to a Pinball repair Mini class hosted by Stern I think. He basically said that the reason that pinball is losing popularity is that the maint is not being done on schedule. Hence the machinces break down (especially the older ones) and it upsets the consumers when the game doesn't work. It costs more to operate the pinball versus an ordinary video game. So they are less profitable. Bottom line they just don't net as much cash.

My favorite Postgres pain was when we were seriously considering it to replace MSSQL server. I kept trying to reference another database from the current one in a stored procedure. My assistant was finally told that it is not possible on the support mailing list. I was SHOCKED. I consider partitioning things in seperate databases a minimal requirement. I don't know if Postgres will ever get it, nobody seemed to share my concern on the list.

Oh well, Thankfully there is SAPDB and Firebird around.

  8. A series of books like this for higher lvl coding? on Knuth Releases Another Part of Volume 4 · · Score: 5, Interesting

The main reason that I have been hesitant to purchase and slog through these books has been the fact that they are written with an outdated assembly language for a non existant processor. I realize that the point is to learn these algorithms, however, since I rarely if ever code on that level any longer, is there an alternative? Something using a language like Java, Python, or even, ack! , 'C' would be more to my liking.

No flames please. This is just an honest question.

  9. I'm sure this is related to melatonin levels on Sleep Less, Live Longer · · Score: 1

There was an intersting study done by a scientist at Monsanto where he observed increased life span in animals who were fed a restricted tryptophan diet. Very nearly to the same extent as calorie restriction achieved.

Now. Melatonin is derived from Seratonin. Seratonin is derived from tryptophan. Seems logical that supression on the melatonin axis is the beneficial effect here.

He also noted that taking seratonin antagonists, there are a few out there, helps some cancer patients in remarkable ways.

It is definately worth more study if you are interested in life extension, and loath engaging in calorie restrictin ;)

It also seems likely this is the case as insomnia could very well be related to lower melatonin levels, perhaps they have an enzyme "deficiency" which is relulting in their hormonal cascade having low melatonin with normal tryptophan consumption.

  10. I have two EE degrees, only use them at parties. on Non-Traditional Career Routes? · · Score: 2

I have a BS and MS in EE. It gets me interviews but I program exclusively these days. It seems to me that it does carry some level of respect for the person who gets the degree, it isn't a cake walk. Occasionally I use my DSP education in my work, but not that often.

For the most part, I get the satisfaction of knowing in intimate detail how most things electrical work. Sometimes it even impresses women at parties who have had too much to drink.

I guess the bottom line is, if your enjoy the subject matter, stick with it. If you can accomplish finishing that degree, you can do almost anything.

You don't clean up threads... that is an odd thing to suggest. When a thread is done what it is supposed to process it should terminate itself. It is very tricky to properly terminate one thread from another, if it is at all possible within your programming env. At the very least threads need to be aware of shutdown situations.. and then gracefully exit if that is possible.

You are mistaken. It would be very foolish to injest Americium. Typically, particulate radiation eg alpha and beta are shielded for the most part by your skin. If you inject or injest these types of emitters... you will totally deposit their energy inside your body. They destroy by ionizing other molecules in their path until their energy is spent. Alpha radiation is particuarly dangerous; it's having a +2 charge and a mass of 4. Therefore it has the shortest effective range and the most damage. When it is internal there is nothing to protect you.

I don't think you understand the concept of reactor "criticality" based on your above statement. Being critical in a reactor simply means you are producing the same amount of neutrons from fission that are required for the next "cycle" of the reaction to proceed at the SAME power. That is not a bad or dangerous thing.

I was an EE grad, MSEE 92. This question rings very true in my ears as the same situation I was in when I graduated! I was faced with some harsh realities of looking for work during a recession. I came to the realization that my carrer would ultimately be more portable if I persued the software development path vs hardware.

I cannot stress this enough... I gained superior job flexibility over being forced into serious hardware design niche dead ends.

I happened to have been forced to learn some C for doing DSP work before graduation and I landed a job doing same for the Navy on a contract basis. These days, many more companies need custom programming, as compared to EE expertise.

I also enjoyed the faster rise in pay thanks to the demand surge for software. I expect this trend to continue.... many hardware jobs are/were being moved overseas.

You individual needs will be different but I suggest you cuddle up with a good book on programming and just jump right in.

    Free book suggestions.
