"On the other hand, some of the downsides of a society without government are visible, as the country is divided by warring factions and the roads have gone completely unmaintained"
Well at least they can pick up the phone... and call someone who cares!
Thanks for the informative review. Sounds like an interesting book/package. One of the reasons why I hardly use linux (although I've got it set up on a dual partition) is that basic tasks seem to have such a steep learning curve. Perhaps this book might help me overcome those.
"PHP, Perl, Java, C and C++, and Visual Basic, C# and ODBC"
Does the author show each and every example in all these languages? If he did, no wonder the book's 800+ pages long!
A lot of people around my office (we're all laptop-toting consultants) use the travel suitcases are small enough to carry onboard airplanes, but big enough to store laptops and a whole lot more.
Saves your back because of the roller wheels, and is built for travelling so it's tough and durable. Can't go wrong there...

Yeah... reminds me of a line from Spaceballs:
"Before you die, there is something you should know about us, Lone Starr.... I am your father's, brother's, nephew's, cousin's, former roommate."
Hm... I wonder if this is coming closer to the Mark of the Beast that the bible talks about?
In Australia, they use now swipe cards to check attendance at schools. Swiping at a terminal brings up a mugshot of the student on the screen, so the staff member can perform a visual check to see why Abdul Habib has blue eyes and long blonde hair...
For Pete's sake... I'm going to get real mad if the guys on the 19th floor keep misusing our R&D technology just to fetch their morning "coffee and donuts"...
I've got hotmail, yahoo and gmail accounts. I keep my hotmail and yahoo for the addresses -- too many of my friends have them already, and I can't be bothered to tell them to change.
I got the gmail account because I was sick of cleaning out my junk folder (which counts towards your 2MB limit in hotmail).
Now that yahoo is up to 100MB and hotmail is up to 250MB, though, I'm laughing. I haven't cleaned up the junk folder, and the yahoo one is up to 2500 items!:)
I think the biggest concern is usually usability. Sure, Open Source maybe free and pretty, and have lots of bells and whistles and maximum customisability. It may even be downright more powerful and feature rich.
However, M$ throws billions of dollars into the usability department to ensure that Windows and Office get more intuitive and easier to use with each iteration.
I think when it comes to the crunch, those willing to tinker get the most benefit out of open source. However, for the general public, they usually want something with a less steep learning curve and mainstream acceptance.
You need to take into account affordability in terms of outsourcing software development contracts to. In Australia, where I'm from, the big thing at the moment is outsourcing stuff to India, as their rates are somewhere between a third and a half of our local rates - and that's after factoring in travel expenses and the like.
China might be a viable alternative, I don't know about the rest.
Working for a company that's had a pay freeze for the past 2.5 years, I totally agree with you. We have had so many people leave that I'm now surrounded by contractors.
Benefits can only go so far, but the bottom line - salary still drives and retains people.
The author dedicates the first three parts of the book (table of contents here) to building antennas, wardriving and hacking access points.
Tick.... another item on the Christmas list to myself. Should pay for itself in no time...:)

Let me guess... next you'll be telling me that cassette tapes are dead too, right?

It's a good idea to test the drive with a DVD you don't care about - you know, in case it gets scratched or something:

Ahahahahaha....
Hm... I wonder whether wardriving and hacking wireless networks would stand up in court as well... :)

Hooray! Now will there be revised system (memory) requirements too?
It breaks away from the nuke portal feel by having movable content blocks.

What if Seti@Home and the World Community Grid combined? We could find those damn aliens that are causing all those diseases in humankind!
Hey isn't that the place that they filmed a James Bond flick? :)

Amusing to know that some swear words stand the test of time, and are forever ingrained in computing history. :)
And it so happens that the fittest is currently also free :)
Haha, thanks for the trip down memory lane, guys. Now, how about my all time favourite arcade game - Alien Vs Predator?

Probably some poor, frazzled out programmer trying to meet a deadline and taking the easy option out. Either that, or a damn lazy one!
