Don't think it's just for when you forget something - most of the time, I remember how to type gtk_menu_get_attach_widget(), and what arguments it needs; I just can never be bothered to type it over and over again.

Of course it's trying to look like the rest of the linux desktop, it uses the same widget set! Sure, you can use one of the High Contrast themes or Simple or somesuch, and Gaim is going to look ugly that way because that's what you've chosen it to look like.

Completely different widget sets (MSN Messenger, WMP, Office, usual win32) on the screen at the same time? That is ugly.

  16. You keep changin' when you oughta be a samin' on Flock, the New Browser on the Block · · Score: 2, Interesting

The most innovative thing about Flock is that it's trying to do away with the notion of "browsing." ... Essentially, Flock's software is intended to serve less as a window into static Web content than as a customizable conduit for participatory Web services, from Flickr to del.icio.us to the collaborative online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Are they trying to turn browsing into browsing here? I think they may have overdone the alliteration, but I don't really understand what they're getting at. 'Browsing' the Internet is probably the best term here, even if it's not static content that is being browsed.

Besides, products that try to change or turn away the norm tend to not get very far - see Opera vs. Firefox and IE, or (more recently) disposable DVDs vs. normal ones.

I don't think this is going to get very far at all, even with the big limelight given to it by Slashdot here.

I don't know how anyone can go "Microsoft can't include any good applications by default, so that's ok, we understand". It is not ok! Microsoft's monopoly means it has to play by different rules - and in this case, the rules are making its products worse.

It is true that MS Paint isn't powerful enough, and neither are any of the other utilities. And yes, better functionality should be included, but as long as Microsoft is clinging so desperately to its monopoly, that isn't going to happen.
