My kid has never run out of money in his account because we taught him that spending every last penny is a dumb, self destructive thing to do. We openly discuss our finances with him and always have. New form factors might not be as hard of a sell as you think. I have notice that when it comes to LED, many of the big box stores actually sell fixtures that have the bulbs permanently wired in. The premise being that the bulbs will last the life of the fixture. So, those manufactures clearly believe that people will replace fixtures often enough to make a profit.

The early CFLs also used to emit a huge amount of IR noise. I found out about it when I was alone in my house and my TV changed channels on it's own. ~10 minutes later it changed channels again, and shortly after it turned off on it's own. It's a bit disturbing when you are in a house by yourself and the TV starts changing channels on it's own.

Not likely going to happen. More and more stores are actually adding wifi for the customers. If I am in a Safeway, the competing store is going to have to have one heck of a deal to get me to put the product down where I am and drive across town to get it somewhere cheaper. For a $25 steak, they would have to sell it below cost. For a $2 can of soup, they would need to pay me to come and get it.

That isn't necessarily true. Just as a genetic predisposition to eating your young is going to effect you evolutionarily in that even though you have technically already passed on your DNA, it doesn't help keep your DNA in the gene pool if it is destroyed before it can also pass on it's DNA. Extending the parents life beyond childbirth can certainly increase the chances of your DNA propagating through the gene pool.

Just use the Netflix player built into your TV. If your TV doesn't have it, $50 and you can have a Roku that will play your Netflix. Netflix on a gaming console falls into the category of, 'They might as well offer it since the device can handle it.' It shouldn't even come into play in deciding to buy a game system. Of course, paying an extra fee to watch Netflix on your console is just plain absurd.

  25. Re:The roads would be shut down on Speeding Ticket Robots — Laws As Algorithms · · Score: 1

The current standards are 90% not 99.9%. I'm not arguing against autodrive cars. I want them. The discussion is concerning how current, "We enforce it when we want" laws would play out. Your hypothetical 54.5 would never happen. The autodrive cars would max out at 54.5. Road conditions including other cars would put a fair amount of variance in that 54.5 max speed. The law is specifically designed to put the top 10% into the speeding category. If everyone is maxing out at 54.5, the only way to put 10% back in the speeding category is to lower the speed limit.

Our current laws rely on a lack of enforcement and a lack of consistency. This is simply one example.

On an side note, I suspect that by the time we see a less than 1% human controlled vehicle count, human controlled cars on public roads will be all but outlawed. At what percent it happens is debatable, but I suspect that at somewhere around 25% human controlled, we would see laws outlawing human control on public roads. 75% of the population would not be affected by laws outlawing human driving, so the 25% holdouts wouldn't be able to stop the requirement. Of course, the number could go higher faster depending on the FUD (real or made up) that is spread. We already see how statistics can be skewed concerning driving dangers with things like drunk driving (which I don't support, but can recognize the faked statistics) and cell phone use.
