  1. Games? on Win2000 Still Performs on 8-year-old Hardware · · Score: 1

I would have thought the requirments of many new computer games are driving PC sales. I used to use windows 95 on an 11yr old thinkpad for college work until last year. Its hardly news that Windows 2000 is good for ordinary everyday mundane tasks. I dont think many people buy retail versions on windows anyway. So it may well be that people use 2k on old machines because its good for what they want to do.

What about the concept of Self Determination? That a particular nation of people should be allowed to govern themselves.

I am a little concerned about the whole "war on terror". If you consider for a second Ireland, like the US got its independence though what would now be branded as terrorism.

Getting the English to consent to the Irish Free State required a substantial number of bombings and murders. The perpetrators of these acts of terrorism were the 'old' IRA.

The story of the 'provosional' IRA is a longer story than merely catholics v protestants. While bombing places like Canary Wharf was a despicable act, I think the provisional IRA was bred by the human rights abuses suffered by the catholics in the north. Ms Thatchers attitude was not of any assitance.

Thankfully the IRA is pretty much defunct as a terrorist organisation but unfortuantely is morphing into dangerous mafia like organisation. Their cause is largly gone, but those who are little more than criminals remain.

What in the future if we don't like our 'masters'. Will the laws and technology protecting us from "Evil Terrorists" merely maintain the status quo?

Only way that a different conclusion can be reached in an analogous set of circumstances is if the original judge is over-ruled by a superiour court, or if legislation (paid for by?!?) is passed changing the law.

So, if you go to court and are cleared of charged, e.g. if the officer takes down your licence plate wrong, and you are cleared. If on the second occasion, the officer also takes down the number wrong you will also be cleared.

Why is it for some reason everything, be it national security, convenience for civil servants etc etc etc gets considered before privacy in issues such as National ID cards. Surely, as illustrated by the many valient efforts at DRM the technical ability is there to produce a modern doucment to validate ID and also protect privacy.

When we hear PR speak about DRM its all about how hard it is to crack etc etc etc, why cant the same technology be employed to control access to an ID card, and PREVENT unauthorised access?

The UK (and those who still have time) should resist ID card proposals, if they wish to remain free of these really scary proposals.

Perhaps it is nigh time the Americans do look to their foreign policy, and not take the easy route of saying all terrorists are twisted and there is no point in even considering their motives:

Take Northern Ireland as an example:

    a) NI was to protestants what Israel was to the Jewish. Elections were skewed so Catholics could not get in power, while the RUC and B-Specials enforced the law in a way unfair and prejudicial to the catholic minority. The Catholics lived in slums like the Bogside and could only dream of worldly wealth.

    b) Catholic civil rights marchers, were attacked at Burntollet Bridge and the 'Battle of the Bogside' ensued.

c)At this point the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA, Provos) found they had enough popular support to exist and cause mayhem.

d)British Government did not yeild, but chanted out the mantra 'Northern Ireland is more British that Finchley' etc.

    e)People die

f)Eventually in the 90's (with much help from Bill Clinton) compromises are made on both sides.

g)Catholics and Protestants (or more accurately Unionists and Protestants) are slowly learning to live with one another, and while they have yet to figure out how to share power, at least the IRA are on ceasefire so long that they are considered defunct.

And this will never work for the middle east situation???

    a) Had difficulty reading the CD on my Philps DVD+RW without loading ide-scsi drivers (a command which later had to be removed so I could access the drive once I had installed.

    b) Manually install drivers for my Radeon 9700 Pro

    d) Winmodem (Drivers for RH 8/9 available, no Kernel 2.6 support)

    e) Must convince my Pen drives/Nomad Mp3 player/Digital Camera to work.

All these things *just work* in XP, and very few people have the time, interest or ability to harass their hardware into working. I recognise that much of these problems lie at the feet of hardware manufacturers who do not wish to release drivers, but its not fair to blame windows users for their choice in Hardware.
