In fact on second grumpy thoughts, that applies to all you Americans. $30k US (that's what, like, $35k Australian these days?) for a 400hp V8 muscle car? We pay that for a fuckin' Camry.
Americans would have to pay $30K for a Camry too. Of course, we could then afford insurance and gas for the Camry. I can't IMAGINE the insurance on a hot camero for a 17 year old boy.
I lost my sense of smell too. As for taste, I can only really detect sweet/spicey/salty. If I eat a fruit flavored candy... I only know it's sweet until someone around me says "I smell oranges."
I eat things I used to love and pretend they still taste good. I do eat a lot more spicy or sweet things than I probably would if I could really "taste" them. Even a well prepared steak doesn't have much taste. But a BBQ rib sure does.
Since this loss happened later in my life I "remember" what things smelled like and I have friends that describe smells to me. If you set your mind to it you can imagine quite a bit.
From the article: The traded-in vehicles must have a fuel economy of no more than 18 miles per gallon, be in drivable condition, and have been registered for at least the past 120 days.
Less than 18 MPG to get the cash!?! My husband's 2001 Dodge Durango gets 20 mpg at its worst. So his SUV wouldn't be eligable. Perhaps they should have made the mpg requirement a bit higher for more vehicles to qualify.
Your idea has some merit. But it also punishes those that are already high achievers. If I'm teaching a bunch of honor students, any improvement can only be marginal, since they are already at the top. Compare that to failing students... they have much more room for improvement.
This is a personal pet peeve of mine. I see many programs aimed at encouraging the below average and/or teaching to the middle. Meanwhile my straight A kids don't even get a pat on the back from school officials.
I've met them! I used to own a rental property. The welfare department forced me to accept a welfare family... once. These people had 4 kids. Neither parent worked. They stayed home and watched tv all day long. The kids got free breakfast and lunch at school. Heat was included in my rental. They left the windows open and wore shorts all winter! They trashed my house and moved out without the contractually agreed notice... guess who paid the tab... welfare. Or should I say the taxpayers.
These people were 'lifers' as the welfare worker referred to them. And they were raising future lifers.
In what other area can you abandon your current job (Obama, McCain and Clinton are "currently" senators) for 2 years trying to get a new 1 and NOT GET FIRED?
So when they start campaigning even earlier next time, perhaps we can have an interim election to fill their vacated seat and not pay them.
But then, some Clinton hater would off her. So that leaves us with the Speaker of the House: Nancy Pelosi (Dem). I'm sorry to say I know nothing about her.
Insurance companies can deny someone insurance for a "pre-existing" condition. So once you are diagnosed with cancer/heart disease/HIV/etc you can't switch companies. A friend of mine got turned down because she was pregnant at the time she was looking for health insurance. (yes, she should have looked before...)
Plus you see people using totally untethered laptops in the movies and on tv ALL THE TIME. Not plugged in (great battery). No cable (must have wireless access). The computer novice believes this is real life and when his computer connects to the internet that's just how it should be.
1 - they wont be allowed to work 50-60 hour weeks all the time. Managers are supposed to balance the OT across the team and the budget wont permit paying 5-15 extra hours continuously.
2 - the people you call 'dead wood' might just work smarter and more efficiently. So now they get penalized for getting their work done in 40 hours.
I for 1 have no sense of smell. Mock me if you must. There are corrective lenses for my near or far sighted friends and hearing aids for the auditory impaired. But naught for me!
Think about the last time you had a really bad cold and couldn't smell anything. Did food taste good? Could you smell a pretty flower? Could you even tell if the gas was leaking and you were gonna die in your sleep? The poster with the skunk problem would like to sleep through the night... I'd like to know if there was a skunk right BEHIND ME.
Now if only they could make it as innocuous as glasses or a hearing aid.
I used to be happy with my pay until I read that my CEO got $37 million last year. The difference between workers' pay and that of upper management is so great that it demoralizes us.
And to increase his pay he gets a bonus for reducing the US workforce and outsourcing. So, yeah, I aint happy.
My kids think I'm a dinosaur when I say things like "we didn't have: cell phones | vcrs | ipods | personal computers | digital cameras... when I was a kid." Now I look at these ads and see the advances in 'technology' in my WORKING lifetime.
In my 1st job at a VERY LARGE computer company we had "terminal rooms". For the youngsters that's a room with 10 typewriter like things that you could use to submit your code. (No screen, just test on PAPER.) Then wait the rest of the day to get a printout from another room. This was an improvement over the punch cards of the year before.
We eventual got tubes (terminals w/screen) in our offices, but usally 2 programmers per. And those had that lovely green on black text... like a DOS prompt or X screen.
My parents have a "senior citizens plan" through Cellular One. They pay like $5/month. I don't know how many minutes that buys them but they only wanted an emergency plan.
My mother doesn't even know what the phone number is !!
I was watching 1 of those mindless tv-zine shows the other day and they said now that everyone and their mother has an iPod they just aren't so "cool". When grandmas are walking the mall with white headphones Joe-urban-gansta will dump the iPod and look for the next toy.
I have a CS degree. I am female. I've been in the industry for 25 years. When I 1st started out there were not many women and there still aren't. Back in the 80's there was a push to make us feel welcome. But when you're the only girl in the organization it IS tough. I'd say for the majority of those 25 years the male:female ratio has been like 10:1. I will also step up and say those guys were not all (or even mostly) socially inept nerds.
When I had my children I had to get 4 levels of (male) management approval to take a leave of absence. 4!!. At 1 point I asked 1 of these males "who takes care of your kids"... his reply: his wife. And that was the breaking point for me returning to "programming". As a woman I wanted a life outside the office. I'm not saying all men don't or that all women do. But it sure made a differnce to me.
IMHO: women don't generally feel welcome and we want to have a life. Fixing it is tougher than offering 3 female only opportunities.
There was a grouping of the fossils... like they all died together. Hence they lived together. Lions living together, hunt together so they can take down a bigger animal.
If (when) something major causes a mass die-off of lions and tigers a pride of lion's bones would later be discoverd together, while tiger bones will be found alone.
Remember the Genographic Project? This was IBM's big thing to track your ancestry via your genetic structure. IBM wanted ALL it's employees to jump on that bandwagon.
They stayed away in droves. Hmmmm...

I was discussing this very issue with my daughter just the other day. She is investigating colleges. She happens to be a math and science wiz!
She has NO desire to go into IT. Nor do her friends.
Why?
They don't want to work 60+ hours every week.
They don't want to be stuck in a cube.
They like working WITH other people.
They like doing things after hours that don't relate to their job.
They want to have a social life, family, friends.
They want respect.
These girls have seen all the "girls can do math/science" stuff their whole lives. They KNOW they can. They will take that else where.
When IT becomes people friendly, the women will come back. Many men are leaving for the same reasons.
Exucse me, but if someone isn't "pulling their weight" they should be discharged... man/women/whatever!
I work in an office environment where both genders have flexiblity. If a man needs to take his kid to the dentist, he can. If a woman needs to work at home while the furnace gets fixed, she can. BUT WE ALL GET OUR JOBS DONE! I am not expected to do those people's job while the skip out. They get it done.
Sounds to me like your management needs to adress this.
I loooooove my roomba but would not appreciate it as a romantic valentine's day gift.

You got that right!

Billary was already president for 8 years. SHE wants 8 more.
Two points:
1 - they wont be allowed to work 50-60 hour weeks all the time. Managers are supposed to balance the OT across the team and the budget wont permit paying 5-15 extra hours continuously.
2 - the people you call 'dead wood' might just work smarter and more efficiently. So now they get penalized for getting their work done in 40 hours.
And even then I can't be sure it would work on someone else's DVD player.
The ol' VCR was easy: put in tape, press record.
There hasn't been anything on tv lately that was really worth the effort.

My mother doesn't even know what the phone number is !!
It's also called market saturation.

Let's add:
Work 60+ hours per week to line the CEO's pockets.
If (when) something major causes a mass die-off of lions and tigers a pride of lion's bones would later be discoverd together, while tiger bones will be found alone.
They stayed away in droves. Hmmmm...
