I think some one from the 1920s would be able to addapt to the technology very quickly, I think they would have a harder time with adapting to the lifestile.
1920's nerd - "This computer is the bees knees, I can find lots of information from around the world, and it makes my job more productive. I don't need to do mechnical drawings of my drafting projects, the Computer will do it for me. This is wonderfull"
2000's nerd - "Yeah, cool, want to see my case mod and have a Mountan Due"
1920's nerd - "Wow you are fat, and your teath are repulsive."
2000's nerd - "Yeah well I'll FRAG you in (insert FSP or MPORPG)!"
1920's nerd - "Pardon?"
2000's nerd - "Oh, you don't know about computer games yet...."Explanes games
1920's nerd - "Shocking! I'm going back to the 20s"
I think 'technomancers' would be a better description. Prehaps that is a good lable for the subset of geek that hacks obsolite (aka 'dead') technology and makes it into something cool.
That is what keeps me on an x86 box. Not so much games, but the fact that I can go and buy a new part when something brakes. Or I can buy a shiney cooler part when I have the cash to upgrade.
I find your SONY/Apple parallel interesting, but I think a SONY/Jobs parallel is more fitting.
In Japan Sony is one of the largest insurance providers, one of the largest entertainment companies (Sony studios), they make need gizmos (Sony electronics), and have about a billion other divisions that are almost completely independent from the rest of the Sony empire. The only link between the divisions is the CEO, and that is a post that is strained to the braking point because of the potential and real internal conflicts'.
If we argue that Apple was made by Jobs, then Jobs is a lot like Sony. Mr. Jobs is a leading PC Provider (Mac), a home electronics provider (iPod), a leading animation studio (Pixar), a leading entertainment company (Disney), and the list goes on and on. Jobs has not yet hit the level of massive internal strife that Sony has right now, and the only way he can avoid a Sony stile self destruct is if he keeps a tight lid on EVERYTHING he touches, so his empire dose not turn on it self. Therefore the Mac can't ever be truly OSS, the iPod can never be open, and really, Disney and Pixar must distribute electric content over iTunes only.
Apple makes good hardware. But they don't make it because they love people and want to bring computers to the world. If they did it would be appel.org, and they would have a lot lower prices. Apple makes good hardware because they can sell it, and they code good software to run on good hardware because that way they can sell more. Any image of 'sleek' and 'cool' is all about getting us to give them our money.
Wow, you took my post. This is what 3D Web makes me think of. 1) 3D Slashdot - Headache, useless, also imagine turning a corner and seeing the next version of Slashdot shock-troll picture. Yech! 2) CNN3D.Com News - Irritating, I prefer text to download a video clip. 3) Amazon3D.com - I just want a list of products that match my search, not a VR Mall. I don't like the real mall, and I don't want it on my computer. 4) Google 3D - Ticks me off, makes things hard to scan.
You are right. The cards are good advertising. That is why I think RIDF taging will never catch on. For anything important it is to easy to steal the data off of it, and for anything 'unimportant' like store discount cards or credit cards, the advertising is worth more than the added benefit of being able to track me inside of Vons.
In my wallet I have the following cards: two credit cards, two debit cards (one for a medical flexible spending account), a library card, an AAA Card, a Costco card, a blue cross medical card, a Guardian Dental card, a discount card for the local tire shop, and a zoo membership. In the past I had up to four grocery store discount cards, but I got rid of them. (I keep my geek card in a passport holder around my neck;-)
I can not imagine the pain my arms would feel with that many chips in them!
A GPL game involves art, music, code, story, balancing, game play, and the list goes on and on. This involves work, time and effort. Most people who would want to get involved don't have the time to. If a GPL game was to work big time, it would need backers like OO.o or Firefox has. The problem is Firefox and OO.o provide the backers with something they can use to make money, a GPL game would be fun, but game companies wouldn't make any money off of it.
Or prehaps a move to GPL games. More game play, more story, and less blingey graphics. How many of us would help with code or art if some one came up with a good idea?
For all you know I am that rabit. And maybe it didn't die, maybe it was just pretending to be dead to get the knights to fall into a trap....wow, things become so clear without sleep for a weekend.
All I can say to that is...'w00t'. I would love to go thorugh this topic and make every one +5 insightfull. It could be like granting amnisty from bad karma. Or prehaps that isn't such a good idea.
LOL, bunneys are so cute, they are just so cuddly, the way they jump and frlic is just darling. I love it when they lick my little nose.
Sorry, I use ot have rabits and think they make great pets, and all this pink...I just had a moment...it has passed.
So can I, but the really helpful bits in on my note pad are sketches, diagrams, and doodles about what I'm listening too. Typed notes can't include that(yet). Also, pen and paper adds a level of physical interaction with the subject, therefore aiding memory. I love my computer, but when it comes to a quick sketch on the go, my note pad is still the epoch of technology.
I have never heard a peanut, almond, pecan, or walnut express religious convictions. On the other hand, the Pecan Pie is the lord of all other nut deserts.
Wow, I can imagine the next AV Package, Norton Warf. It would need to have a fire wall capable of striking back on its own (A Klingon would never let an aggressor stand), automatic redundant backups (Klingons have backup organs), and a tendency to talk back if you do something stupid (If you had any honor you would never even think of using Bonsai Buddy).
But they do spread H5N1. I tell you, the internet vital to the health of the nation. Without it we would be forced to use unsanitary pigeons to check Slashdot!
Small software base, for now. It would be very cool to see OO.o, Firefox & Thunderbird ported over. It would provide another alternative for building 'grandmother computers.' Computers that are used for writing letters and checking e-mail and that's it. No viruses, no spyware, no worms. I would never need to fix grandmas computer again!
I know I could do the same thing with Linux or OS/X, but still, it's OS/2! I declare this Cool Retro OS Day, and will now fire up my B-box, my Amiga, and a PC running PC DOS. I will play Sim City for Dos and tweak autoexec.bat and config.sys. I will load OS2 from flopy, all 27(?) of them! Horay!
Sim City 2000.
3000 was lame because it required too much micro managment.
Anything that Sid did with the Civ saga. I still play my old dos Civilizations from time to time.

But any pie is only as good as the crust. Let's hope that a Pillsbury ifruit is not in the future. Home made crust is always the best.

If all this stuff is dead...are we the zomby hord?

Fake adds in games are cool as well. Did you ever play Sim Copter? The radio adds in that game still make me crack up.

Thank's! That is very cool. Now all I need is to find that stack of flopys. :)
