I have seen Tiger Direct's advertisements in my local computer paper. Tiger Direct is pretty much a no name compared to Apple's Tiger. It's like the local Penguin's Ice Cream shop suing Linux for the use of a penguin logo. From what I can tell -- with such an absurd stretch of suing over the use of the word "Tiger" -- I am certain that Tiger Direct is merely suing to get publicity. Surely, this article alone have gotten Tiger Direct a ton of hits.
We run pricing simulations in java (which is about as computationally intensive as it gets) and we are able to do so at the same speed is the equivalent C++ code. In fact, the java code is a bit faster now, as the tools for finding the bottlenecks are much faster.
Two flaws in your post. Firstly, compilation times might be important in what you do, but it certainly does not mean it is important to the majority.
Secondly, althought your simulations between Java and C++ ran at the same speed, it is certainly not generally true -- simply because of the way Java works. To show how absurd it is to think that Java performance has the same speed as equivalent C++ code, let's consider game developers -- if they used Java to program their games, how well do you think it will run?
From the statistics of my personal website, I am getting 30% non-IE hits consistently. Because my site have a wide range of materials that doesn't really cater to a specific crowd, I have drawn the conclusion that although a large portion of businesses still use IE, Firefox usage percentages looks to be over 20% for home users, which is a significant gain over a year ago when it was at ~5% for my site. Does anyone have any statistics that separates the percentage of corporate machines running Firefox versus home machines running Firefox?
I wonder what would happen if that Exoskeleton ran a Microsoft OS . . .
Buffer overflow while mechanical hand is clutching :
Jump to random instruction . . .
Executing clutch and rip . . .
Executing slice and dice . . .
What you said is true, but you made it sound like it is a bad thing. Most technology are derived from the need for 'better' entertainment. Where would the game industry and graphic technologies be if people were not interested in making games and enhancing gameplay?
The Japanese do have a genuine interest in robotics. And it is true that the anime and game industries are big factors in Japan's advances in Robotics. Because of mainstream interest in mecha, especially Gundam, advances such as Sony's QRIO and Honda's ASIMO are made. From bioengineering to fire-fighting robots, these advances in robotics are helpful in many aspects of our lives.
Starting from plastic models of their favorite mecha, the Japanese have a genuine interest in robotics. The anime and game industries are big factors in Japan's advances in Robotics. Because of mainstream interest in mecha, especially Gundam, University clubs and hobbyist start huge projects on trying to replicate the cool mecha seen in anime.
Contrast to Robot Wars with wedges slamming each other (which I find to be quite monotonous and repetitive after the first few times), I believe that the path the Japanese are taking -- bipedal robots which are more versatile -- will benefit mankind in terms of usefulness and application. Heck, even the Japanese version of Robot Wars is much more entertaining to watch, with the robots going through various attack patterns. Check it out here
"What would you, the Slashdot community, do to make it big on your own using the Internet?"
Having a site with your work isn't enough these days. Unless you are the best of the best out of the billions of sites with the same type of content as yours, you won't be recognized. Although it might sound like a joke, but doing something wacky and weird will get you all the attention on the internet, as people start propagating and promoting your site to others. Take Star Wars Kid, realultimatepower.net, Yata, etc, for example, instant fame in a matter of days. Now, shifting from wackiness to the content you are promoting might be a more difficult challenge.
It seems a lot of Slashdot posters marvel at how hair and clothing affects how people react. Ahh, the beauty of an epiphany experience: To finally realize the importance of hair-style and fashion, an aspect of the outside world that Slashdot users have neglected ever since they first touched a computer.
Setting: A static old-school DnD first-person dungeon view is displayed on the mobile screen, with two Chainsaw Zombies going through a "chainsaw swipe" attack animation periodically:
You gain Right Circle Strafe!
ChainsawZombies_00 attacks. You dodged!
Your machine gun crits ChainsawZombie_00 for 20 damage!
Right Circle Strafe fades from you.
ChainsawZombie_01 hits you for 30 damage!
You gain Left Circle Strafe!
You switch to Rocket Launcher.
ChainsawZombies_00 misses you.
Your Rocket Launcher hits ChainsawZombie_00 for 50 damage!
ChainsawZombie_00 is knocked back!
Left Circle Strafe fades from you.
Your Rocket Launcher blast splashes ChainsawZombie_01 for 20 damage!
ChainsawZombie_01 crits you for 60 damage!
You die.
"No exactly. Everybody dislikes microsoft the open source fanatics are doing something about it."
I can tell you that there are some on Slashdot who loves Microsoft. I've seen people posting legitimate issues in Halo and XBox stories, and they get flamed. A lot of Slashdot users owns an XBox and gladly buys XBox games to support Microsoft.
I don't think corporations (specifically Microsoft) will support the changing of the patent laws anytime soon. Especially when open-source is such a big threat, Microsoft needs as many patents as possible to keep its grip on the market.
In the 3D fighting game genre, Soul Calibur is one of the most popular. Really, the other competitors are Virtua Fighter and Tekken. Perhaps it is your opinion that Soul Calibur isn't every bit as good. But as a martial artist and an avid gamer, I can tell you that Soul Calibur's fighting engine is well beyond that of many other fighting games in terms of strategy, robustness, and depth.
It has always been my theory that dinosaurs did not all become extinct millions of years ago. With so many cultures having stories and legends of "dragons" and "gigantic beasts", I think dinosaurs still existed a thousand years ago. If so, perhaps this particular finding is from a dinosaur that died during a period of time more closer to our own.
What other purpose?? It's the perfect device for Female Public Washroom Security monitoring! Every company should have multiple mobile monitors installed -- for the security and privacy of the females, of course. We take a No-Pervert stance in OUR company.
I wonder if they will implement a "Senior Transport" function for this robot. If so, then it would be an awesome feature, because I would get to see George Bush fall off of this one as well.
But if they were truly smart, wouldn't they be able to adapt quickly, and be able to conform their thinking to integrate themselves with the rules and guidelines?
I think smart people tend to overthink problems. However, I think this is what separates geniuses from the everyday smart Joe: Whereas a smart person crack under pressure, a genius can conform their thinking to rules. Geniuses also don't overthink problems because they can see what the problem is asking from all perspective.
I'd hit it over the bloated Ms. Windows.

Those things must have been tasty if they went so extinct. Maybe I'll get to taste one in my lifetime...
You don't need to wait, just go to your local KFC. Dodo Birds will just taste like chicken.

Roboshark vs. Land Walker vs. Exoskeleton
Who wins? My vote is on the Exoskeleton. But the Roboshark equiped with laser eyes might pose a challenge.
Any ideas for what the logo should look like?
A better joke would be: How many people can you freak out driving that shark around popular beaches.

That is not possible. The servers has been down for the whole day. Like every day.
Perhaps Darl McBride intended this all along. He was sacrificing himself and his company for the good of mankind and Linux!
