Soul Caliber III PS2 Only?

Courtesy of Joystiq, the inkling of an exclusivity deal for the next iteration of the Soul Caliber franchise. Sony and Namco may be in talks to ensure that Soul Caliber III only appears on the PS2. Still up in the air, of course, so take it with a grain of salt. From the article: "...nowadays when developers label a game as exclusive, the footnotes usually read 'for about the next six months or so.' There's a chance that Namco may just be making Xbox, Gamecube, DS, and perhaps even PSP owners wait until 2006 for their daily recommended amount of fighting game goodness."

I bought the GameCube and the Xbox version. I skipped the PS2 version completely because it was clearly the worst of the three - not just in terms of the special characters but in the graphics as well.

If all of the characters had been in every version, I would have actually only bought the GameCube version... but only because it was out in Japan before the domestic release (the Xbox version was not, as I recall). Domestically, I would only have bought the Xbox version. So really, nothing would have changed for me - in both cases, I would have ignored the PS2 version.

I honestly think multi-console owners would have shunned the PS2 release regardless of anything. It looked noticeably worse than the other two, with lots of jaggies and slowdown. Control-wise, I don't have any problem playing the game on the GameCube controller, but real hardcore fighters just use an arcade stick anyway (in other words, playing on the PS2 controller with its non-standard diamond-shaped button layout is no better for fighting games than the GameCube controller). Honestly, the Xbox controller is the worst of the three for fighting games because the action of its buttons is not fast enough, but again, I don't buy games based on the controller, I buy based on what the best version is. There are so many specialized controllers out there these days that the first party controllers really are not a detriment to anything.

Most people who bought the PS2 version bought it because they only own a PS2. I think that would have been true regardless of what characters were involved - in fact, with all else being equal character-wise, there's really no reason at all to buy the PS2 version. Maybe the Xbox and GameCube numbers would have flipped, but PS2 sales would have still been 2nd or even 3rd (you gotta think some people actually did buy it for Heihachi, as he's the only actual fighting game character of the three special characters). It can't cost them that much to develop 20 character models and a look-and-feel mostly borrowed from SC1.

Furthermore, I bet a lot of fighting game developers would love to sell 2 million copies. For example, Virtua Fighter 4 is a PS2 platform exclusive, and it didn't even sell as well as the SC2 PS2 release. Hell, even Tekken 4 didn't sell as well as the PS2 SC2 release. The fighter genre is tired and saturated, so 2 million units is nothing to scoff at.

So, where does somebody explain to me why making this a platform exclusive will suddenly boost sales?

Sure, there are more PS2 consoles out there than the Xbox and GCN combined, but there are also a TON more PS2 exclusive games to compete with. If your game isn't the absolute most sought-after title the world has been waiting on for years, you're probably going to get looked over by most of those PS2 owners, who are faced with a sea of hype flowing from every direction.

GCN and the Xbox, on the other hand, offer a clearer landscape. Most of the crappier developers stay on the PS2 for the market share, since they know they won't sell enough copies on the Xbox or GCN to justify the cost of a cross-platform game. That makes the games a little higher-quality, but also creates a little scarcity in variety. Thus, any good 3rd-party release for these platforms tends to get hyped up by the community for free, and sales are usually as good as on the PS2.

So, when a company thinks they can improve the success of their game by shutting out these markets, I have to call bullshit, especially when their last release on three platforms was quite successful.

The PS3 is Confirmed to be backwards compatible. So the PS2 Library is going to roll over to the PS3. Maybe with some enhancements like better AA to make games look even better on the new engine.

However the opposite is true with Xbox2. And the the game would more then likely be part of the release lineup for Xbox2, which would be limited to early adopters.

It would seem to me, that Nintendo should be fighting for it as well. Their new system is also backwards compatible.
The only reason I can see The GC not being viable, is the fact that the PS2 is in more homes then a GC.

If Namco are hoping to push the eye-candy any further than they did with SC2, they're going to have a very hard time limiting themselves to the PS2.

Of the three console versions of Soul Calibur 2, it is worth noting that only the PS2 version has very noticable slow downs on some stages when 'big effect' moves are performed. Try playing with, or against, an Ivy on an animated stage and revel in the frustration of missed frames and distorted timing.

So I really do hope that if it is an exclusive release, it is indeed only for six months or so.

Making the game ps2 specific should allow for a few design comprimises that speed up the game on the ps2. I have to wonder if SC3 will be much more than the SC2 that should have been...

If it does turn out to be a joke though, it'd be a shame... I really like the character design of the circular-bladed femme-fatale. The models for Mitsurgi and Taki look great too. Here's hoping that the joke is the part about the game being exclusive to the PS2, and not the game's existence.
