Yeah, then have loads of bogus data rows in your database from all the failed attempts, or the increased work of purging them. But that only works for membership type stuff, what about contact forms, or other forms of submissions...it just get to be a hassle...
Ya know, I hate CAPTCHA too, but to this point, it is THE ONLY thing I have been able to do to stop stupid emails coming through my contact pages on my web sites...granted, the recipient (me) is the only person that gets the spams, so my forms haven't been exploited, but it's still annoying to get the crap myself.
If anyone has a better idea to stop people from hitting my contact form, I am all for it. To this point, lots of things have had small impact, but nothing has had the results CAPTCHA has.
Was at a rising star in the.com market, we all dressed casual, company parties were beer bashes, people were over-paid, schedules were relaxed, it was great, I was stoked with my career choice.
Then the bubble burst, I was laid off, ended up consulting at various stuffy corporate entities that one could barely laugh without the PC police finding you, dressing in business/business casual with rigid hourly requirements, bosses expecting you to work late/weekend to fix their lack of planning/understanding problems...that sucked ass...
It seems jobs are ripe for the taking again, and I am now pretty happy working at a middle of the road cultured place, business casual, relaxed schedule, decent pay and fun people...not everything, but at least something I don't dread going to every day, which is nice.
some people choose the stupidest shit to get worked up about...BBC is a business, they they made a decision, deal with it, if you don't like it, it's not like there aren't other options...
Man, get a life, people...it's too short as it is without giving yourself a coronary over something so incredibly trivial.
My work has all been simple procedural scripting that is completely uncompiled and freely editable...yes, I will license it however I wish...it is the truest form of open source. I will do with it what I please, market it how I please and license it how I please.
I have developed open source web apps, have managed the projects and such...I call them open source and likely will be doing so again, and I will license (or not) my application however the hell I want to (or not at all)
I like to point out to the members of my forums, so they know why myself or staff tends to take a more active roll in moderating or just cooling things down...it leads to a better community for all...these kind of stories just piss me off...everybody is a toughguy behind a friggin keyboard.
Agreed, and I also think Microsoft has been unfairly targetted by these silly laws...Microsoft, Google or anybody else can not (or should not) be forced to open their code to anyone...they provide a set of tools to access their processes as they see fit, so whatever, they don't owe anyone anything.
Why must they open up their processes because they are a leader? I have never understood that...they don't owe anyone that the way I see it, they are still a private company...they are just winning, why punish them for it?
Google is breaking no laws I know of...yes, they are growing (or, have grown) into a user data powerhouse...but I am happy for Google, they are a great internet success story, put out great services for their users charge reasonable (if any) fees to use them...I use Hosted domain email, docs and spreadsheets, AdSense, Earth, Traffic, and more...more power to 'em...rock on Google. Keep giving me these great services and they can have my surfing activities logged...it's not really much exciting.
I have a few Linux geeks on my studio recording forum that get a lot done with multimedia production, but it's not for the masses yet, every now and then a greenhorn will try and end up frustrated and angry...
And I have yet to see a Linux based tracking app that even comes close to Sonar, Cubase, ProTools or anything like that...until that happens, forget it...it doomed to a niche' life.
WTH is up with this society that keeps finding more and more reasons to blame anyone and everyone else for bad things that happen except the person/people actually responsible. Ya know, don't blame guns, don't blame gun dealers, don't blame auction sites, the blame falls solely on the scumbags shooting them...whether they had a troubled childhood, substance abuse problems, molestation issues or whatever else, it still boils down to being THERI FAULT, they did it. Guns don't fire themselves...at least none of mine every have.
have good content, based on keyword analysis, that people value, keep it current, organize your content properly, lay out your titles and page content strategically and accuraterly and you'll do fine on any search engine, try to game 'em, they'll get ya...
Who cares who owns it, besides, as a pretty successful AdSense publisher, I am glad the possibility of a bigger footprint of what I can advertise and at what kind of revenues...Since there is currently no automated, contextually sensitive advertising system that even comes close to AdSense.
My girls still play Barbie video games and whatnot so it has not been an issue...however, what I am taken aback by is even comparing the "violent" games I played compared to what is out there now...when I was a kid the violence consisted of hitting somebody with a sword (or whatever) and the opposing player dissolving or disappearing with a weird sound effect. Today they get cut in half, one can dismember them and such things with extremely realistic graphics which in my mind brings it too a whole different level.
Video games were not what my parents worried about...in my day it was Dungeons and Dragons and KISS music that would make me a murdering, theiving, satan worshiping dreg of humanity...instead I did the next best thing...got in to I.T.
I totally agree, that name puts him on a quasi-pedestal in the hacking community, it gives him the notoriety and celebrity he wants...
He's a punk-ass.
Exactly, pretty much the same way I feel when people bitch about Walmart...the big difference is Walmart didn't fire people in masses that made too much, they just never let people make that much in the first place.
I dunno, while the pessimistic side of me agrees with you, I look at my life and consider it pretty damn good...coming from a modest background with supportive parents I did stupid shit for years getting into drugs and crap...pulled myself up (with no tax money from you all) got my shit together and am now married, two great kids a nice house in an upper middle class neighborhood with a decent job and good neighbors and family...
Am I an elite, in charge and wealthy beyond my dreams, no, but I do consider myself blessed to live in this greatest nation on God's green earth.
It hasn't panned out too well for Northwest Airlines yet...I am guessing it won't work much better for CC...at least customers lives aren't at risk with CC though...
Managers don't have to be technical proficient, they simply need to know different technologies conceptually. I have found the best managers used to be developers, and, while they may have never developed.Net or Java or AJAX specifically, they have enough experience and knowledge to understand the concepts, and know who they can rely on that knows the specifics of what needs to get done.
I look at these situations much like I looks at people that cheat welfare systems and such. So many people spend so much time figuring out how to cheat a system, I wonder if that same time was spent trying to work the system the right way how much of a difference in the net outcome it would be...
So Google free speech right prevents this other clown from spreading his right of free speech...
I run Google Ads myself, and have looked at MSN's and Yahoo's and as far as I recall they openly state they will refuse ads for any number of reasons...hate sites, slander, adult content, etc, etc, etc...
And how did these RIAA folks get so much power? I really don't understand how these self-appointed rulers of the recording industry got to this point, it's really gotten to a point of lunacy...

eh, you are all just cheeseheads to me regardless of town ;-)
