What this demonstration does is make people believe they are coders. I've taken a few coding classes and while I can probably write a 'Hello World' if pressed, there is no way in this universe, and probably the next one, that I could code anything else. For whatever reason, whether I truly can't code or I've convinced myself I can't code, I can't.
This course does the opposite. It gives people the impression they can code. Some will go on to take CS courses and some of those will get their degrees, but of that remainder, only a small fraction will be good coders. The problem is, the rest, while still graduating, will get jobs in coding and we end up where we are now: abysmal code being thrown at end-users from every direction.
I know it sounds like the chicken and egg (or, how can you get experience if no one gives you the opportunity because you don't have experience?) but there has to be a better way to get good coders so we don't keep performing deja vu all over again (my apologies to Yogi Berra).
Those are private places and can do (almost) whatever they want as far as restrictions go. If you need a coat and tie to get in, they can require it. They require shoes to be worn? So be it.
Planes are the same thing.
It's not YOUR place, it's someone else's place AND it's a communal area. For the sake of sanity, preventing people from talking on the cell phones while on a flight is the very least they can do.
Neither. I'm the guy who gets called on to fix the problems created by CTOs and programmers or find ways around the problems created by CTOs and programmers.
Just what we need. More people putting out more crappy code. As if a large segment of programmers aren't already overpaid for the spaghetti they produce.
We don't need MORE programmers, we need BETTER programmers. There are enough programmers in existence (contrary to what those in the industry will claim) yet the abysmal state of software shows how poorly these people perform.
I would have no problem with a company paying a programmer $250K IF that programmer could produce good code on a daily basis. Instead, we have hordes of overpriced, egotistical, self-important hacks who believe they're worth more than they're paid and the shit we are forced to put up with every day proves it.
Now that we are searching for evidence of this hologram, and may be close to establishing something approaching 'proof', won't the folks projecting the hologram alter the program to make it more difficult for us to determine if we are living in a hologram and thus negate our findings which will lead us to do more research and in turn cause the hologram to be changed again? Rinse and repeat.
As to the 'continue anyway' button not working, I found the same thing so I did a right-click, Open in new Tab and got in.
If Yahoo keeps pulling this shit, I won't use them any more other than to comment on their stories which say, "Look at [some random star] in her hot dress!" which they insist on sticking in a Flash format.
... updating a browser... is NOT mandatory. it's optional.
Don't tell that to some of the people on here who will immediately whine, "But this version fixes bugs and closes vulnerabilities. Don't you think about the children?"
It's the same thing with XP. It's a great OS which satisfies the needs of 80% of the users on the planet, yet people will whine about them not jumping all over W7.
Just because something's new doesn't make it better.
'I want to everybody to be clear: the people at the NSA, generally, are looking out for the safety of the American people. They are not interested in reading your emails. They're not interested in reading your text messages. And that's not something that's done.
So this is like, "If you like your insurance, you can keep your insurance." Got it.
Explain how it is hyperbole to state one is treated like a criminal when trying to board a plane when:
You can't walk up to a ticket counter and pay for your ticket with cash
A background check is run on you by the government when you purchase your ticket
You have to remove articles of clothing to prove you aren't carrying something dangerous on the plane (leaving out the fact that a stainless steel pen makes a very handy weapon as do hands and fingers)
You can only bring small quantities of items such as toothpaste, water and other items on board the plane
The passenger list is sent to the government before the plane leaves to see if you're part of a criminal organization which means your entire history is checked (which is different than the above listed entry)
You can be placed on a no-fly list for any reason whatsoever without a viable recourse to get off the list AND which the government will deny you are said list but still won't let you fly and won't give a reason why you can't fly
Now it's your turn. Explain how anything I just mentioned is either not a fact or hyperbole as it relates to one being treated like a criminal when attempting to fly.
I will weep for you as the $95 fine is "forcibly extracted"
At which point we go back to the courts and show that the activist Republican Justice John Roberts was wrong in declaring this a tax since it raises no revenue and that the government cannot force people to hand over money to private companies. Problem solved.
This was never about people getting health insurance. This was about making sure those who have chosen not to take personal responsibility for themselves can leech off everyone else without changing their ways. If the President truly wanted to make us all healthier, he would have pushed for higher taxes on tobacco products, forced people to undertake exercise to keep their weight down and would have gone full bore against drug dealers.
But he didn't. Instead, he took the easy way out and made everyone a ward of state by making sure they have to keep paying and paying and pay some more for the above mentioned people without the ability to exercise conscientious objector status like the religious wackos do every time the issue of abortion or contraceptives come up. If they don't want to pay for abortions or contraceptives because of their beliefs, why can't I not pay for the medical costs of smokers, the obese, alcoholics and drug users? Those are just as much choices as a woman taking contraceptives or having an abortion.
Then I guess they shouldn't have tried to steal someone else's property.
It's like when someone tries to steal copper wire and gets electrocuted. It might seem harsh to some (not me), but if they hadn't been trying to steal, they wouldn't be dead.
I prefer the world we have, in which men and woman exercise free will.
Yet somehow I don't have the free will to not hand over my money to private companies because if I don't, the money will be forcibly extracted from my bank account.
I don't understand why the lunatic fringe of Slashdot treats this short procedure as some unconscionable violation of basic human rights.
It has nothing to do with a lunatic fringe. It has to do with not being treated like a criminal by default, which is what the TSA does. You are a criminal, plain and simple, unless you can prove otherwise.
That mantra is the complete opposite of presumed innocent until proven guilty. If you feel like being treated as a criminal is acceptable, then there is no hope for democracy.
I think courts should strike down these special tax deals as a violation of the equal protection clause.
Considering the courts have said it's perfectly legal for the government to force people to hand over their money to private companies or have the money extracted from their bank accounts, I can't see a scenario where these same courts would say it's illegal for a community to put taxpayers on the hook for the lost taxes.
already has significant training procedures to accommodate big processes (like, say, a government would have),
HAHAHA! Thanks for the laugh.
I speak from experience when I tell you you're dreaming if you think government has training procedures. We have a training group and my area (the IT side) does more to train end users than they do. We keep wondering why we're paying these people when everyone comes to us with training questions.
we think this will change the way insurance works,
So if they find I'm a good driver, never getting in any accidents, maintain a good distance between myself and other vehicles, don't get any tickets, they'll give me a huge discount, at least 50%, from what I'm paying now, right?
*crickets*
Insurance company: We're sorry, we don't operate that way.
Me: Yeah, thought so. Just another scam to hand over my money to a private company.
then the insecure system is what is dangerous, not the alleged criminal.
There is no alleging about it. People who deliberately break into someone else's systems are criminals. By your logic if I leave my door unlocked and you walk in and steal my stuff, I'm the one at fault. Nice way to blame the victim. Do I need to drag out the rape example?

social services for all those laid off employees would have been over $100 BILLION.
Considering over $1 TRILLION was spent bailing out the banks and Wall Street, that doesn't seem too bad.

to whine about an injustice
Thank you for confirming this is an injustice.
Except it's not a tax since it raises no revenue. It's a government mandate that I hand over my money to a private company. How is that a tax?
Then I guess they shouldn't have tried to steal someone else's property.

Naw, we can't do that. That would mean taking personal responsibility and we know that's an evil concept which shall never be mentioned.
Clearly you don't understand the purpose of 3D printing. As Raj and Howard showed, you can print your own whistle. In only 3 hours!

Yeah, but don't tell that to the people who marked me flamebait for stating the obvious.
How many cars are on the road compared to how many Teslas?
If you have tens of millions of cars and trucks (pickup trucks) on the U.S. roads, you are bound to have many fires for various reasons.
When you only have a few thousand of a specific car on the road and several catch fire, you need to ask questions and investigate.
Anti-freeze, I've been told, has a slightly sweet taste. You can add it to someone's drink without them knowing it. Until they have kidney failure.
