When I was in Highschool we joined a competition called Canada FIRST Robotics, Basically they give you the board and some motors and relays, and you have to build a robot which will compete in some kind of game. In the year we did it, The game was a Giant 48' x 24' Pacman game where 4 Robots had to run around and pickup yellow bean bags and launch them into a rotating goal hopper. It was probably the highlight of my highschool career. Google it for more info.

Maybe, but look at the kind of math that gets taught in schools now. Maybe back in the day students were flexing their brains with the crazy arithmetic skill they had, but you probably weren't doing 40 terms of a Fourier series either. Just because we're slower to multiply 3 digit numbers in our head than students of yesteryear doesn't mean we're crippled.

*sighs* Oh Parents. He's an idea. Stop worrying about the evils of Television and Computers et. al. Stop Lobbying the FCC to censor all broadcast media. Do some parenting. Sign your kids up for swimming lessons or something, expose them to a variety of things so they can learn what they enjoy, but if they get their work done, if computers are what they enjoy, regardless of what they're using them for. LET THEM USE THE BLOODY COMPUTER.

  11. Re:What of College vs Uni in Canada on How Important is a Well-Known CS Degree? · · Score: 1

It depends on what it is. For example, Engineering design in many cases requires a great deal of Calculus, Vector Calculus, Stats, and Differential Equations experience that, as far as I know, you don't usually get at College in Canada. If you want to program on the other hand, you can probably learn a lot of that at college, but in general, yes I agree.

  12. Quality of Professors on How Important is a Well-Known CS Degree? · · Score: 1

The only thing I can say that might be a benefit is that well known schools tend to attract high calibre Profs and have more connections in the industry. That's why they're well known. Schools like Berkley, MIT, Waterloo, etc. are well known because they have these crazy profs doing research, and because they have a lot of people who are again well known who have gone to school there. However: That stuff happens at the Grad level, Undergrad honestly doesn't mean anything to anyone, everyone learns the same crap, and whether you get taught Linked Lists from Prof. Joe Blow or from Knuth doesn't make a huge difference from the standpoint of the material, but it is neat to meet people who are well known like that, and get their prospective on things. If you're happy where you are, stay where you are.
