Hey, Sony, you've gone a long ways since our trip to 1998 trip to Hong Kong and your 1999 June Playboy!!! Congrats on being a first in the world! - VLL
What a utopic point of view you have [throw a few bucks].
br>
I'm sure the accountants and tax grunts are thinking "gee... I think I want to influence the software industry and put my personal million bucks into the game." NOT. maybe "what! a new software that does the work for me and I still get to make as much money for doing less work!"
I think users don't give a hoot about industry. They are self centered little professionals who have little time for other peoples professions (sound familiar?)
Interesting that the math says that each computer cost less than 3Euros (or about $3) to do. Since I imagine it would take about 10minutes for the average superman to set up a computer via some great imaging technique, that means the IT staff was working at about $18/hour.
This may be a bit off topic, but it seems obvious to me that the media, including such likes as slashdot, is loaded with people paid to sway opinion. It's cheap, it works, and all it takes is some good writing skill. The result is successful propaganda or marketing.
On the surface, it seems the camps are promoting their format to the fullest, without regard for whether they will win the format or not...
This makes me suspicious... maybe the VHS vs BETA is just a smoke screen.
Seems to me more like a DVD-R vs DVD+R pseudo-battle.
If the camps "push" the right buttons, both formats will appear in the common home device (probably even the devices on the opposing sides).
Why?
Because, this is a way to convince the public that BOTH formats need to be licenced. Both camps will make license fees, and enough uncertainty to keep the upgrade cycle moving along. (DVD peeked out, became an one-shot, and didn't need upgrades like other tech standards... example: VGA, SVGA, XVGA.)
Double the fees, and good side effects... hmmm, could it be a smoke screen?
Maybe the Real Risk of SETI and the Earth Radiowaves is that when the big-friendly alien signal comes, it hits a nice EM frequency that effectively nukes all of us?
Note that the signal wave would need to be strong enough to get to Earth and that the alien make-up might be very different than that in our cell/neuclear material...
Back in the 5 1/4" days, when floppies were real floppies...
I remember modding my 1581 Drive so that the LED that saw through the write-notch... and saved me the effort of using my crumby plastic disk notcher...
For those of you old enough to remember, that was back in the C64 days.
Errr.. the crumple zones are the shock absorbers... in effect shock-mounted. And a controlled deformable cage means more energy absorbtion as long as it doesn't deform or collapse on the occupants, that's a good thing.
I'll sell my machine with lots of RAM integrated on board. It uses a state of the art 6510 and it can play the fastest Jumpman games! And best of all, you don't need a hard drive for it to boot up the operating system!
It's made by a little known company by the name of Commodore...

, they describe the Mars Recon Orbitor which weighs about 2 tonnes, and NASA is sending to Mars... abit farther than the moon. I wonder if NASA could use the Atlas to send the $100MMan to the moon if they wanted to?
"NASA researchers tout the MRO spacecraft as the largest orbiter aimed at Mars in the last 30 years. Standing about 22 feet (six meters) tall and spanning 44 feet (13 meters) wide, it certainly outsizes the agency's other red planet orbiters, Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey. The orbiter weighs about 4,806 pounds (2,180 kilograms), but came in about 112 pounds (51 kilograms) underweight allowing engineers to fill that weight with additional propellant, extending its flight lifetime out to about 2014."
Where did the additional 2 laws come from? They don't really make sense either... for example, if I liked this babe robot/android my buddy had, I would use Law 5 and ask it to come to my secret lair... and voila, my unofficial OWNED robot! I would simply issue like "stay here" and the robot would never be able to leave.
Asimov went to great extend to explore the philosophy and implementation of his laws... even added Law 0, Must protect all mankind. It's sort of crass to butcher his wonderful concepts that help spread robotic dreams to some many young minds.
I see stores selling old PII 400's with great performance abilities.... Linux or Windows! selling for less than $50. Why not gather all the old computers in a logistic sweep, and ship them to places that need them?
It would be great for the environment, and I could finally have a reason to upgrade... 'cause I certainly find it hard to justify more power...
Errr...
I may be missing something... but I thought the article was about an effect caused by an eclipse... ie. the moon is between the earth and sun... So is this about a pendulum that's in the path? (no, not/. but the moon's shadow!) And thus, the "nightime" part or Earth has no relavence?
I think it would be a great idea to use MS Monopoly for a good cause... but how would you achieve this? The UN with the French and Germans certainly didn't agree with the US and Brits.
Maybe a good way to handle this is to send the "good" ideas to MS from the UN? have a delegation of world powers "reccommend" ideas to MS?
But it still greatly disturbs me that the "non-political" Olympics had the Iranian politics and 1980 Moscow had the US politics...
How could we find someone who could actually tell us what "good" is?
Don't count on the Canadians winning... it makes things really easy when the project is named after the original Arrow... afterall the Canadians do really want to sell lumber and no so mad cows!

In the old days.... when disk operating systems were REAL disk operating systems...
I seem to remember the "$" terminators came from the world of CP/M?
So is DOS a copy of CP/M?
"Supernova remnants in our own Galaxy and nearby galaxies are theoretically observable for over a million years."
Something doesn't sound right... perhaps I am misinterpretting "remnants".
But if SN 2004 dj is 11 million light years away, would not the event have happened 11 million light years ago? Not just a million?

Inciteful, write on!
..."billions of cash" means that we could have instantly cured software of "buggy" and "security holes". IBM 360 here we come!
... "compensation for their illegal activities" because rokzy is a better judge and jury than any
legal system, of course.
... "fucking up the industry" must be because MS has gotten rid of those 18 Wordperfect disks I used install for incompatible printers.
Gotta love the "intelligence" of rokzy...
Hey I think rokzy should be with Einstein, Newton, and Mandella... maybe not, he's better than all of them put together!
