  1. Re:Linux Desktop Thoughts... on Linux, Inc. · · Score: 1

Doom3, which will run in Linux without Cedega due to it's opengl nature and the nice people at id software, runs about 50% as well as it does in windows.

Half Life 2, with Cedega, also runs at about 50% the fps as it does in windows. In other words, I'm fairly unhappy with Cedega and Linux gaming in general. The one game that does run about the same as in Windows that I play is Neverwinter Nights.

My video card is a Radeon 9800pro and HL2 and D3 in windows fine. The games are unplayable in Linux.

I think people realize this just fine. The reason people get pissy when their flight gets delayed by an hour is because they were TOLD that it wouldn't take that long, and so they PLANNED on it not. Just an observation.

One big name game isn't going to go very far in legitimizing Linux as a gaming platform. Consistancy of big name releases for Linux is going to go a long way towards legitimizing Linux as a gaming platform. If, for example, Half Life 2 were to also come out for Linux in the near future, that, combined with the Doom3 release, would go a long way.

You aren't going to get a gamer base with a few big name games. It takes a lot, and they have to work as well as they do in Windows.

Well, if you want to be realistic about your argument (that MS Office is just too expensive) then you have to include this in the discussion. At the university I attend, I know of *no one* that bought a stand alone copy of Office. I probably know of 5 people that said "it came with my computer." The rest have a pirated copy and always have. Hell, most everyone I know has a pirated copy of windows itself.

It just isn't a viable argument to say that it's too expensive. It can easily be obtained for free.

I'm with you, I like to customize. I have used Firefox for a long time now, and I love it. But I don't really think it is obvious that everyone needs to use it. It just doesn't matter to a lot of people.

Yeah, I consider the good/bad of a GUI to be a pretty subjective thing.

I had absolutly no problem reading the text in the upper right. I didn't think the color scheme looked bad at all. No, I'm not color blind.

The placement of the tools in the lower left is bad because that's the last place my eyes will look? So the very first time I open the program, I might spend an extra 2ms looking for the play button. After that, I know where it is and it doesn't really matter as long as it's on the surface and not buried deep in some menu.

You can't spell it out point by point because it isn't as objective as bad code. If I look at the GUI and say, "hey, that's kinda cool looking," then that pretty much proves you wrong right there. Unless you go by some metric I don't know of?

I think you said it best with, "everyone, everyone has an opinion on visual things. So if it works for you, I say, go for it."

    Agreed.
