    You need both methods.

2 out of 3 companies I worked for had a whitelisted set of tools you were allowed to install. It never contained either a the full set of tools you needed to do your work, nor the newest versions. So you were completly left in the dark if you were allowed to accept this auto-update or not.

This is the setup for employees who do not handle files from the outside world and only need internal networks.

The third company went along the lines of: We've hired expert developers, they all grew up with PC, have their own machines at home - who if not them should be trusted to know what tools they need and to discern usefull tools from BonzoBuddies.

This is the setup for employees who regularly work with outside files.

I live in Florida as well. Our "Redistricting" 20 years ago was done by 3 Federal Judges.

Florida law requires districts to be Contiguous and Compact. Well, the districts were contiguous, even if only a few feet wide in some places. They were definitely not compact. And this was done by supposedly independent and fair minded (Federal) judges. That redistricting plan was the ugliest in the history of Florida.

Remember, politics is not about what is best, politics is about the least objectionable alternative.

  9. Better employment strategies on How Safe is Your Employment Application Data? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Most jobs are found through personal networking. Online applications are a "going through the motions" task to demonstrate the company hired the "Best Qualified Applicant"--the person they already wanted to give the job to. This is also true for resume collectors.

It is a far better use of your time to talk with the people who would become your future co-workers.

Additional Rule of Thumb: The company/agency will be as careful with your application data as it will be with your employee data.
