Firefox users are smart enough to know that 'Alternative' search-engine plugins ARE available.
(MOST) IE users are not as smart, even though the button in the drop down menu clearly states 'find more providers'. They probably confuse providers w/ ISP's.
What google should do is... incorporate a IE7 detection system into their adwords program and link users to the IE7 google-search plugin download/install page on microsoft.com, so that way the few lamors who actually read their ads, may even click on one, who knows.
When you ask questions to people who know a great deal about the subject, and you know nothing about the subject, of coarse they are going to get a bit tired/annoyed by trying to explain things that will take you years to comprehend, especially if it's some IRC channel. *what do you expect?*
Whether it's a Windows/*nix,.NET, LAMP, ROR, AJAX, J2EE, Oracle, or even SAP, you are bound to find SOME individuals with self richeous attitudes.
I have to admit though, after making my (computer illiterate) friends use firefox instead of IE, their PC's are not nearly infected as much as before.
However, you don't always see spyware, because most spyware is now installed via rootkits.
I have given up building PC's for people, and instead am urging them to buy Mac's for their home use. I won't even bother suggesting Linux to them, as they can't even use windows without breaking it. If they can't learn the 'basics' of windows (ie: Start Menu, Add/Remove Programs, etc), then they sure as hell aren't going to be able to figure out how to use Linux.
I don't mean to hate on the OpenBSD Project, I just don't use it as an OS.
OpenSSH however, is a great application, and is far more widely used than OpenBSD.
If they want to minimize their development efforts, I suggest they simply move away from OpenBSD. I know this will be a great loss for those who actually use it (most of them are die-hard openbsd fans, and will be pretty pissed).
If you want to develop free software, you have to expect that people will want to use it for free.
what a developer dresses like, has nothing to do with decision making.
What IT Managers decide upon, is based upon either A) their own experience, or B) the marketing-hyped FUD they read in mainstream 'tech savvy' sites like Cnet, Computer World, etc.
Why should people have to dress in a suit and tie, just to sit in a cubicle and code PERL? I do it in my underwear at home, running a multi-million dollar business (from home), self employed, all thanks to open source and learning online (for free).
my 3 years of internet addiction, now = $3.5m/year revenue, so far.
I've been trying randomly all day to connect to this application so that I can bare witness of what all this hype is about this, and after 20mins of the page loading, it opened a splash screen, then continued to load for another 20 minutes, which was when I said 'fuck this'.
Let me know when all the fanboys from digg are done slashdotting this app.
If they release the source code, then cool. Although, I suspect they will try to make this a web service, which if is the case, I won't be using it, or not until they upgrade their servers and bandwidth!
What about those botnet 'command center' servers hosted on personal/home IRC servers that use dyndns (or other dynamic dns services)?
What about ISP's in China, or other countries w/ different laws?
What about the botnets that are run on major/public IRC networks, such as freenode, rizon, or efnet?
There is no (legal) way they can get a major Public IRC Network 'taken down' because of a botnet that is connected to it, and believe me, there are plenty running on efnet!
uhh, you can include the PEAR modules within the codebase of your application, so PHP4 users don't have to already have pear installed on their server.
I don't mean, compile the ENTIRE OS from source, that will take hours, if not days (or even weeks).
Slackware is a great distro. Debian is also very nice. Redhat, Suse, Fedora, and Ubuntu are just not for me.
I like slackware because you can install ALL of the applications that come with it, and then easily 'removepkg...' to remkove the packages that I INSIST be compiled from scratch, which are usually Network/Server related.
Desktop applications I could careless about, I'll install a package for say, jedit, but not for Apache.
It's nice to be able to write your own shell scripts that perform all the required installation commands, and then easily replicate the hell out of a server farm with no hassle, but that can be done with any distro really.
I noticed that we had a lot of nationals working here, but no such security policy towards dealing with IT espionage.
We have a 'No Fratronizing' policy, which made me laugh a bit, but no IT Espionage Policy.
So, even if we have spies working here (in the development dept.), there isn't much infrastructure in place to detect their illicit activities, much less protect our data from being stolen by developers who have access to it.
It's a bit of a serious issue imo, but the upper-mgnmnt doesn't seem to care enough to do anything about it, other than call me 'pro-actively paranoid'. =p
It sure does! =)

Why do slashdot trolls get glory on wikipedia, that is only encouraging them more. =p
What about independent-artists who run their own private/independent streams?
Who is the FCC to tell me that I have to use a DRM-compliant format?
Why can't I willingly distribute my music-streams online, knowing that it can be copied?
As an independent artist, I encourage people to download my music (for free!).
I'm not trying to make a living at it, as if I were, I would have probably sold my soul to a greedy/facist/capitalist record label years ago.
Which lobbyist is behind this bill??
And to think, I actually voted for feinstein once! =/

Whether it's a Windows/*nix,
Who Cares!
I've already seen some pretty horribly written AJAX sites, which obviously have no concern for XSS or http request attacks.
This will only continue to happen as long as we allow foreign (corporate) intelligence agents (aka corporate spies) to work here on their H1B Visas.
China is the biggest threat to corporate (and political) espionage in the US today.
RedBerry... figures.
Just remember my little communist friends...
A) Red is the color of blood
not glory (errr, prosperity *cpc buzzword*)
B) The sun rises in the east, and sets in the west.
When the sun sets, only darkness will reign upon thee.
Linux viruses are called 'in-experienced administrators'.
Windows viruses are called 'marketing tactics'.
I think you're confused w/ the Java/Oracle Snob community. =p

how convenient... your 5th year of linux, and you're using a Kindergarden Distro.
Congrats! lol
It would explain the horrible back/neck pains that I am experiencing. =/

I wish all you 'botnet hunters' the best of luck.
Ubuntu - "The Dreamweaver of Linux Distros!"
I like my software and operating systems like I like my women and weed... bare/nekid, and home-grown. =)
That was always the 'lamor' or 'linux for windows dummies' distro as far as I thought.
Now, Ubuntu and Gentoo cover that market niche, so I'd have to say this is a (sad, but) good thing for the guy.
I use a lot of PEAR Modules between both versions with no problem.
For instance, the XML_Parser, XML_RSS, Mail, and Mail_Imap all work fine for me in either version 4 or 5.
uhh, you can include the PEAR modules within the codebase of your application, so PHP4 users don't have to already have pear installed on their server.

It's really sad that people are just NOW figuring this out. =/
