    and create your own centralized codebase '/usr/lib/php', thus allowing you to share the same OO code throughout all of your projects/websites on that system.

    ie: @require_once 'MyClass.php';

    A very efficient approach to managing code and developing web applications is to use a staging (development/QA/production) server environment to thoroughly test your code, and a CVS Repository to efficiently manage your code.

    A bit of discipline, patience, and common sense is also required. =)

    Simply using firefox does not make users 'more advanced'.

    Just because you prefer DIV over TABLE does not make you a 'more advanced' HTML/CSS Programmer, it actually proves your lack of experience in the real-world.

    Introducing asynchronous functionality into your web page does not make it 'more advanced', it is just an 'alternative' design pattern.

    AJAX is simply a design pattern people.

    Whoever made the site 'AJAXDesignPatterns.com', has no clue what they are talking about.

    1st off, you're a tool if you use the MS Windows OS.

    2nd off, you're ignorant for trusting Google (no matter what OS you choose), and simply retarded for WILLINGLY installing/using their desktop search spyware (err, software).

    I use google, and I am well aware of what I should and should not allow them to record. You have to assume that ANYTHING you do on google (or any other website for that matter) is recorded, being sniffed, or monitored by who knows!?

    Revealing personal information, pictures, anything on a public web site, is a common-sense 'no-no'.

    Don't blame google for their transition into the darkside, blame yourself! =/

    Chances are, anything you try to say, no matter how hard you try, will not matter to them.

    They are of the 'spoonfed' corporate-mindset type, and will not listen to you, as you are on the bottom of the ladder as they see it, or a 'maverick' as I've been deemed. lol =p

    I am suffering in a similar situation, and currently looking for a new job, and I suggest you do the same, as it will never get better, unless you become the manager.

    Linux has made many independent contractors and small businesses very successful, not to mention governments, NASA, and big corporations like Google.

    I know this move may sound like career-suicide, but if your boss wishes to flush money down the drain in software licenses (generally with the excuse of 'vendor support'), simply because he reads to much cnet or whatever, then you should perhaps consider going above his head (if possible), for 'the (financial) sake of the entire company/organization.

    Who needs packages and 'patches' when you can automate the installation/update across 12931293789321728 machines from the execution of 1 simple (hand-coded) shell script, using NFS and rsh.

    There are many ways to combat abusive listings, without having to charge people who post ads.

    In the case, Web Programming 'Standards' or 'Interpriters'?

    Until the Interpriters that are built in to web browsers can interprit compliant 'standards-based' code correctly, then there really is no need to try to be 100% compliant w/ the W3C.

    In the war of TABLES vs. DIV+CSS, I have to say that TABLES win.

    I do agree that DIV+CSS is nicer, cleaner, and easier to code... but, that means nothing to me if my site that generates 1,000,000 hits/day, is not compliant w/ the browsers that the audience is using.

    Say 2% of those 1,000,000 users use a browser that does not properly render DIV+CSS *ie 4/5 etc*, then you have just made a bad impression on 20,000 users, who most likely won't return to your web site.

    If you could care less about those 20,000 users, then fine, but if you depend on their hits to pay your bills, then you'll understand what I'm saying.

    From my experience, most IT (development) staff sit quietly, trying not to 'rock the boat', doing whatever they can to secure their jobs (generally writing un-maintainable code, or supressing knowledge transfers), and overall being as minimally productive as possible.

    Structure, Processes, Life-Cycles, and Oversight help make a simple 2 minute task drag out into weeks, and sometimes months (if not years).

    Smaller IT shops are generally far more productive, albeit under a lot more pressure to produce results.

    Non-Profit, Education, and Government IT Dept.'s are generally run the worst, and least productive.
