  1. As a college student on Interest in CS as a Major Drops · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've gone to four seperate colleges and found all of thier classes lacking. I first went to CCA, a commuity college in Aurora, CO, and then moved to Metro State College of Denver, CU in Boulder, and finilly Colorado School of Mines. Each school's CS department was not very apealling in terms of what I wished to learn. I am predominatley self educated in the first place I felt that it was unfiar that I couldn't just skip certian classes in which I already knew the critera. I finaly gave up college and just put together a decent resume and got my foot in the door working for one of the local defence contractors in InfoSec. I'm getting paid $20,000 more for my skillset than my freinds who have graduated and earned a degree (I'm getting $70,000). I feel that I'm underpaid for my skillset but I know that if I went to college and only learned what they were teaching that I would not be where I am today through self education. Honestly I would rather not goto college. I feel that college cannot teach me what I need to know. Until the day that they get better classes where I feel that I can be properly challenged then I have no intentions of returning.

I would like to thank you for taking notice of linux, however, you made a couple of mistakes. Let us review. 1) I can get it for free IF I have a paid and registered for a windows version of the software. Just because we use "free" (as in speech) doesn't mean that we are below paying for a peice of software commercially. Hell I'd pay $29.99 for a good CD burning kit if it had noticably better features than my current software (k3b). Unforunatly I do have an issue with having to buy one piece of software that is completly useless to me to use another. I have not run (MS) Windows for at least 4 years and when I did I really did not have use for a cd burner anyways. I am not below paying for (quality) commecial software I own a copy of Photoshop CS that I use on my Apple G5. I play Doom 3, World of Warcraft, Half Life 2 and UT2k3-4 with cedega and I listen to and purchase music on iTunes using CrossOver Office. Each piece of the software I have purchased and use almost daily. Just sell it for $29.99 or whatever you guys charge for your software. 2) Unlike most Windows users Linux users will read the EULA and everything else we can find on and about the software. Why on earth did you use Microsoft's DRM on a Linux product. There is no way in hell you will catch any Linux user running that. Most Linux users absolutley hate Microsoft we use Linux not always because it's "free" but because it is better than the mainstream OS (Microsoft). Excuse the analogy but I prefer to be able to grab my OS by the balls and make it do what ever the hell I tell it to. DRM in most of our opinions removes fair-use from the game. Besides it's Microsoft. Can't you use some other form of DRM or other. Please. 3) It's a nice gesture you'll probably take a lot of flak for the way it was released. Don't stop though keep working on it. The only way you get a piece of software to be adopted by the linux community though is for it to be better than everything else. Seriously I do not see any benifit to my current software. I have no intentions of installing your software until you stop the farse of a "free copy" and just sell it for fuck's sake, and remove MS's DRM and use something more appropriate ( None MS ). I most definitely would try and either defend my software or would get very hostile and insult the other person. Again with the tactics that Sun has shown in the past in terms of linux I would be curious as to see what thier responce would be. I hope this clears up what I meant in the post.

Actually here's the run down as I see it. SCO owns Unix code, and trademark for Unix. What SCO does not own is the intelectual property or the copyright for Unix, as a matter of fact Novell still owns these according to the APA (Asset Prurchase Agreement) http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=200311102 3050367 which clearly show exactly what SCO owns and what SCO does not in Schedule 1.1(a) Assets and Schedule 1.1(b) Excluded Assets respectivly. Pretty stright forward if you ask me. The thing is if this holds water in court SCO is pretty much down the drain as Novell pulled this ace out of it's sleve in it's latest "Reply in Support of Novell's Motion to Dismiss Amended Complaint" http://www.groklaw.net/pdf/Novell-56.pdf. Now if this proves true then SCO's ownership of the "concept of Unix" doesn't hold water, and all they can do is claim that the GPL is unconstitutional, which they are doing, and try and play it out from there. As for the IBM case all that they can say is "stop using our code" but in order to do this they have to prove that IBM has unix in linux.

It's not like I want to be a bad guy, but killing demon hordes to protect the masses or foiling the dastardly bad guys who are always trying to take over the world has kind of got played out. When you dial that number my home phone connected via ATA, my VoIP enabled handheld with 802.16a and my wifes phone all ring. Just one number. Each phone (although having individual IP adresses with inside my network including my modile which is VPN'd via [insert your favorite flavor of VPN technology] share 1 number. Basicly makeing my old PBX connection dead. So what's bad about this. Granted the quality is a little lesser than my PBX connceted home phone but my cell phone is pretty much worse than both. The reason for this is probably because your VoIP provider lives miles away across high latency cabling. QoS helps yes, but maybe when you have a VoIP provider that lives in the same state as you do you wont have such a bad signal. Besides it's still relitivly new give it some time so we can work out the kinks.

I fond this out the hard way playing with all differnt environment values in SuSE just to make it function. This leads me to believe that Debian is a better development platform for GNU software. Yet the main problem is still there in terms of commercial software. If your company is planning on running commercial software I would use SuSE or RedHat. They are better geared to this type of commercial software. But to be honest I'd stick with what your corporate overlords have mandated you to run. Like everyone else has said you'll find support for it much better than spending endless days trying to figure it out.

I would actually say that considering the price $700 dollars is not that expensive for a home automation device. I've seen some go for about $2000.
