I am guessing you don't know much about raiding in EverQuest if you say that. I am sure there are some cool and really fun raids in WoW but why beat your chest about it when you don't know what the other games have to offer.

I stopped playing EQ a long time ago (during Planes of Power) but Scripted raids comparable to what you describe have existed in EQ since long before WoW was released. I think that even some of the Velious bosses had rudimentary scripts but from Luclin and on there where some really complex ones, like what you describe and more. From what I hear from friends who still play EQ, the high level encounters have not exactly become simpler over time.

No, I seriously doubt that WoW has the most complex script based encounters available, so give that chest some rest. I am sure they have some nice and fun ones none the less.

    OT, but pretty funny.

A couple of years ago in Sweden a prostitute demanded to be able to be able pay tax on her income, she argued that she too had a right to the social benefits this provides (In Sweden, prostituting yourself in not illegal, pimping or buying sex is though).

After a lot of fuss with the tax authorities, she was finally granted to pay tax on her prostitution income. She then immediatley sued our prime minister for selling sex, since he got a share of the money, she argued, he was acting as her pimp.

That courtcase never got far I think, but it was pretty funny none the less.

What about the 18 year old with a 17 year old girl friend? How is that law worded, does courts have the possibility to use their own judgement?

Fixed age limits just come with so many problems, nothing says that something happens suddenly on your eighteenth (or whichever) birthday that makes you able to interact sexually without harm. There can be a huge difference between eighteen year olds and eighteen year olds, people mature differently. There is also a huge difference with two teenagers having sex with each other or some 50 year old having it with a teenager.

Courts must be given room to make individual judgements based on the circumstances. Fixed age limits doesn't cut it.

Most people are not going to respond to being unable to buy a console on launch day by saying "Oh darn, I guess now I can never buy one". Most will simply pick one up later, meaning no lost sales

This would be true if the PS3 was the only console available. But now, quite alot of people will think "Oh darn, I guess now I'll have to buy an 360/Wii instead" and this will equal to loss in sales for Sony.

This is especially true for Europe where the launch has been moved forward 4 months. Worst case (for Sony), is that they will have a hard time establishing themselves in Europe at all now, because enough consumers are tired of waiting/want a new console for Christmas/don't like being downprioritized and buy a competing console instead. Not enough fanboys/patient consumers remain to create a healthy European player base that wants to buy Sony games.

I am quite sure that Sony do NOT want this happening, if they had the capacity to create more consoles, they would, at least to be able to launch in Europe too before Christmas.

Well, this doesn't exactly help alot since copying the music is already illegal (copyright infringement) providing you can not claim fair use.

    I'll make an analogy.

Stealing bikes is forbidden according to law. But some people still steal bikes fully aware that it is illegal. So bike owners install locks on their bikes to prevent theft. But some bike thieves will just bash or pick the locks and still steal the bikes.

So, lets assume that BOAA (Bike Owners Association of America) puts some serious lobbying money towards making it illegal to circumvent bike locks. Will this stop bike thefts? Bike thieves are already breaking the law, so what makes anyone think that they will respect the latter law when they already disregard the former?

  21. Re:It will come on EU Software Patents Dead Again · · Score: 5, Informative

Actually, we already have Software patents in the EU. The layers have been using a small loophole where a computer application is said to be patentable if it has a "technical effect", meaning a physical effect. The technical effect has been quite loosly interpreted to the point where it,for example, can be a technical effect if you compress data before before transmitting if across a (physical) line, since it will be transferred faster.

With this kind of definition of a technical effect almost anything becomes patentable. It has not been tested in court though. But we do already have thousands of software patents approved in the EU. This would just have put an official approval on the whole buisness.

Not having it go through will still leave all software patents where they are, but it will also give us a better chance to fight them off.
