After hearing a bunch of sentences with strange blank spots I walked right back into the store and had to argue with the idiots that i didnt want such rubbish and that no i didnt have a CD copier in my car.

i can imagine their crappy movies are just the same. With such a closed minded mentality ill be happy to see them fail. There are a dozen other places to download movies (legally). Walmart has always catered to the stereotypical soccer mom that drives around in a Mercury minivan and is thoroughly convinced that her kids are being more negatively influenced by seeing a boob on TV than by their own theories about a guy that translated metal tablets to english using special glasses that then magically disappeared.

The article only describes about half of what symbian is all about...
Symbian, after all, provides APIs to natively interact with the OS and many of the phones hardware....this native interface requires applications to be written in C/C++. This type of development is what most people (more specifically, those in the article) complain about. I have never developed a "native" application for symbian. The main reason for this is that the IDE's and environments which nokia provides are not available for OS X.

I can attest though that Symbian (read Nokia series 60) provides an awesome JVM and set of support APIs for accessing messaging, bluetooth, networking and various other system resources. CLDC and MDIP (1.0 and 2.0) provide great libraries for developing apps well and very fast on Symbian. I have developed several Java apps for Symbian (including one which fetches the latest articles from the /. front page :-) ), and up until now have loved how easy it has been to deploy apps via bluetooth to the phone. Of course this may change with Series 60 v3 and the new "security" garbage...yet another reason to purchase an E61 now before they decide to upgrade all their decent phones to s60v3.

It does seem though that the article is a bit biased towards the iPhone. But until i see guaranteed proof that the iPhone will include a JVM and support libs for java development on it...i won't consider it "5 years ahead of everything else." And Apple's apparently lack of support for "hobby" development on the iPhone isnt much of a turn on either. So we'll have to wait and see. I wouldn't say Apple chose their own homebrew stuff over symbian because "symbian is crap" but rather because many of the things which Apple likes to do (Cocoa based guis) simply wouln't run on Symbian.

to put it bluntly, you have no clue what ur talking about. Essentially every product in IBMs portfolio excels on multi-proc systems.

Any server side app running in a remotely decent jee Application server with Stateless beans for example will scale unbelievable well onto multi-proc systems.
any application with a handler thread per incoming connection request will benefit from multi-proc systems.

the beauty of things like jee application servers is that developers design applications as if everything was single threaded, then u flick a couple switches and all of a sudden ur app is replicated and running on a cluster of 100 machines....now consolidate that into one machine with 100 procs and ull see even more performance enhancements.
DB2 is another example of an app that scales amazingly on multi-proc machines.

designing multi-threaded applications really isnt as hard as most people make it out to be. everything in the real world is "multi-threaded". when u move ur left arm up, u can move ur right arm down. if u have a robot with 4 cores....spawn 4 threads, one for each limb....if u need to multiply 4 matrices....spawn 2 threads....each thread multiplies two matrices....join the threads.....then multiply the results. u just need to get creative in order to start takign advantage of multi-proc machines.

and when i think about it...i dont think theres a single app i could name that uses only one thread.

  9. how this affects apple on Does Portable Music Have to be Compressed? · · Score: 1

I have made several purchases on the Apple iTunes Music Store...mainly a single or two and the occasional freebie of the week. But recently, I have stopped doing so. I have a relatively nice stereo at home and therefore enjoy listening to CDs over MP3s. As such, I find the "lower" prices on iTunes do not adequately reflect the difference in quality between CDs and the tracks received from iTunes. Compared to the amazon marketplace, its not much cheaper to buy music on iTunes...sometimes its even more expensive. As soon as Apple starts selling lossless quality tracks, I'll start buying full albums. The music industry is more to blame for this but it makes no sense to pay $1 per track for degraded quality music. Granted most people dont notice the difference...but the difference is there.

Its like buying a porsche with a 4 cylinder honda engine.....non-aficionados may never notice the difference....but its still there...and ud still feel cheated if u found out later on.

I dont really know why Apple doesnt offer the Lossless option....im guessing to save harddrive space on their own server farm. i wouldnt go so far as to say that they are crap.
    1. CDs are actually quite durable if you think about it. most can be put through horrible abuse and they still play. and even if they do start to skip, you can often copy the disc using error correction and you end up with a perfect new disc.
    2. CDs hold quite a lot of storage for how cheap they are. they may "only" fit about 12-15 songs on an album but thats because each 5 minute WAV file sampled at 22khz in stereo is roughly 50 MB. i can't see the music distributors pushing music on memory sticks anytime soon. that would just boost the cost even more.
    3. CDs function as a good media for storing the music over longer periods of time. if you were to rip all your music in full quality to your HDD, most with a decent music collection would require 1TB or more of storage space. its easier to let a friend borrow a couple CDs than it is to hand him a harddrive
    4. for audiophiles, the "alternative" (i.e. compressed digital music) is total crap. anyone with a decent speaker system (and i dont mean Inifinity's that you bought at Circuit City in your doors and reardeck) knows that the melody/music itself is really only about 50% of the whole package. Imaging is equally important but is something people never acknowledge (much less know about).
with a proper soundstage, you can easily A) pinpoint the location of the instruments/vocals within a 3dimensional space, B) decipher what sort of an environment the music was recorded in, and C) hear minute nuances such as lips rubbing the microphone, fingers sliding on strings, etc. with "alternative" forms of music distribution, the majority of the aforementioned is lost. get someone with a nice stereo to show you what music REALLY sounds like....and you'll never go back to an mp3 again. So for this, CDs are great. and that's why i don't buy music on iTunes. Until they get a lossless format, sure, ill download the free song of the week, but overall, no thank you.

as for the article, i think one thing the RIAA often forgets to mention is that while music sales are "slowing"....DVD sales are at an all time peak. people are opting to spend their money on a more "sensory" experience (with visuals and audio).

Throw in the fact that the average american teenager has become so superficial they are only interested in crap music anyways, its no wonder they arent willing to buy the latest britney or Juvenile CD. they may find the music amusing, but i think honestly they know that its something they will get sick of within a couple weeks.

Time is also a major factor. i remember sitting in front of my dad's CD player when i was young with a set of nice headphones and listening to a whole ladysmith black mambazo album or aerosmith classics live. This is not a typical way for a youngster to spend their time these days.

The RIAA has a relatively antiquated (and pessimistic) way of looking at things. and while there may be studies that show that there has been a decline in CD sales since the advent of P2P programs, one thing is for sure: the music industry is interested in one thing only -- making money...and if they were honestly losing money (as these studies insinuate they are), they wouldn't be in the business anymore.

  14. add-on quality vs dedicated HD player on HD-DVD Confirmed For Xbox 360 · · Score: 1

I dont see much advantage in purchasing an external dedicated HD-DVD player over a simple add on peripheral. Other than possibly the unit's ability to remember where you were in a movie when you stopped it or better software or a nicer remote....the picture quality of a movie is not as reliant on the quality of the HD-DVD player as DVDs were on the quality of the DVD player. This is because the HD-DVD player no longer needs to possess a D/A converter like normal DVD players do. The HD-DVD player plays a very small role in the whole setup. it simply needs to be able to read and decrypt info on the HD-DVD, authenticate with a downstream device, encrypt the data for transmission according to the HDCP specification and send digital bits serially using TMDS to the television. this is all in the digital domain

previously, DVD players would send a voltage signal to the television which would sample at a certain frequency, the voltage level of a single sample would represent the value to be used for a single pixel on the display...the dvd player would thus send analog streams of pixel values...so neighboring pixel voltages could affect each other's values.

since HD-DVD players send striclty digital ones and zeros (of course at a much faster rate) which are then grouped and used to determine a pixel value, theres very little an HD-DVD player can do "poorly" in terms of quality.

the advantages of dumping $1000 on a "high quality" HD-DVD player over the xbox 360 add-on are not very apparent. of course if ur connecting ur HD-DVD player to a standard TV, then maybe....or if your HD-DVD player is also performing audio D/A conversion....perhaps its more worth while to spend money on a better unit....but then again, why would you be doing either of the aforementioned things??

If the cat is sideways (with respect to the hunter) and slightly at an angle. The bullet enters behind the shoulder (which is blocking most of the head since they walk with them hanging down), punches through into the head, then punches out the front of its face. Thus: blown apart cat head.
