I generally agree, but sales tax is based on the *delivery* location. It makes no difference at all where you place the order from.

  2. I'll take the one that is $100 cheaper and replaces the internal computer with a bunch of HDMI ports.

Sadly, it doesn't work that way. The dumb TVs are low-end models that have only basic features. If you want features like extra ports, a better quality panel, a full set of adjustments to calibrate the display, TVs in that range will also have the "smart" feature. That's ok for me as long as it works normally as a monitor when it's not connected to the Internet.

Also, if you want to build a computer, where else do you go?

Amazon.com. The last time I built a computer, Amazon had nearly all the parts I needed at the same prices, including all the expensive parts. Amazon has a much better return policy. I've been avoiding Newegg since they required me to pay shipping to return a DOA power supply. It was heavy and I had to ship it from Boston to California. Amazon would have provided a prepaid shipping label at no cost.

I'm sure there's a list of affected processors with the range of serial #s. Something easy to check.

The defect is not in the processors, although people are going to be confused about that. The defect is in the Cougar Point P67 and H67 support chipsets.

  8. Re:Dear Apple.... on 'Back To the Mac' Media Event On October 20th · · Score: 1

The problem with the iMac is that it has no expandability. You can't add a second hard drive, second optical drive, and especially can't add any PCI cards. A serious user of Final Cut Pro most likely does need one or more supporting video PCI cards. Expandability like that which is common in PCs shouldn't require the premium price of a Mac Pro.

  9. Impaired hearing from concerts and headphone on Can We Really Tell Lossless From MP3? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The conclusion of the article is significant: "The only person to get all four tracks right is someone who listens to their headphones at pitifully low volumes and hasn't attended any rock concerts. We can think of two explanations. One, the subject has particularly sensitive ears, so doesn't need to turn the volume up high. Two, the subject hasn't wrecked their hearing through years of listening to a walkman/MP3 player at high volumes and/or seeing Motorhead at the Hammersmith Odeon. Arguably, both apply." From my experience, impaired hearing from concerts or loud headphone volumes is much more likely. Also, the age of the listener matters, since it is well-known that the ability to hear high frequencies diminishes with age.

I have Plextor drives and software, and check errors rates on burns from time to time. I've found that with a good quality drive, like Pioneer or Plextor, and good media, like Taiyo-Yuden, the error rate is consistently low. As with most things, you get what you pay for, and using good drives and media is cheap insurance.

In the motion to quash, the defendant's lawyer makes the point that while the court may be sympathetic to the RIAA's attempt to prevent copyright infringement, "playing by the rules" is what the court must enforce. If the rules, i.e. the DMCA, are flawed, that's not something the court can correct. Congress has to update the DMCA, taking into account the competing interests at stake.

The best bet for getting ALL channels on your PC is still the analog hole. Yes, you're stuck re-encoding the video, but most capture cards do a great job of this. HD can be a bit tough to do, but it can be done.

Is there really a way for tconsumers to use the analog hole for HD? The only way I know to do this is using professional HD-SDI equipment (for thousands of dollars.) Consumer or prosumer devices to do that are nowhere to be found. I was under the impression that is no coincidence, that any company attempting to market such a device would be sued.

  16. Re:Yeah, but.... on Variety Declares VHS Dead · · Score: 0

I've never though of VHS tapes as being more durable than DVDs. There's always the chance that the VCR can "eat" the tape, and less drastic mishandling can wrinkle the tape, which is very thin. Unlike VHS tapes, DVDs can be copied with no loss at all (possibly requiring a DL DVD), so you could always keep a perfect backup if you're worried about wear. Also, even a scratched DVD can be copied if you're willing to expend some effort to remove the bad scratches.
