Costs are completely different for government and military agencies. Everything is usually 4-10 times more expensive. Usually, it's partly because the government requires things like lifetime warranties on everything and have certain other requirements that the every-day civilian doesn't.

I understand where you're coming from and at the risk of sounding cheesy, I think this is a case where we have to be a little less... reasonable and responsible. I think for many parents, the idea of having their kids feel better now is worth more than research which may not even benefit their kids, at all.
With charity you have to remember about the people here that will not be able to take advantage of future science. So, I think Child's Play is a nice balance for all the current charities donating to medical research.
I know most people seem to believe that cats are smarter than dogs because they do what they please as opposed to a dog who seems to follow orders almost without hesitation, but I think the true reason is quite the opposite: Cats are not as smart as dogs.
How's that? Well, dogs respond to humans in an almost human way. They react the way you'd expect a person (sometimes a child) would. They obey your orders as though they felt that you're part of their pack. They seem to identify with you and they understand you. To me, a cat seems like it does as it pleases because it doesn't relate or understand humans as well. I'm not saying cats can't empathize and show some kind of appreciation with humans to some extent, but rarely at the same level as dogs.
