Larry Page: Alright everybody, I have some bad news for you. Staff: What is it Larry? Larry: Apparently the new Gpay system is no good to some guy in Greece, so scrap it. Staff: Oh no, all that work for nothing. Larry: Yeah, I know, but what can you do. Guys, I am heading back to the Garage.
Just kidding, really, your opinion is important to us!
What is the point of holding onto those fonts then? If every print job comes with its own fonts, and even similar fonts can't be used, what is the purpose for keeping rather than deleting these fonts? Seems a little crazy to me. A lot of effort, for no reward.
If this is such a trifling amount, as some people on here are suggesting, then what would be the next step for the EU. If Microsoft simply paid the fine, incorporated it as part of doing business in the EU (a licence fee if you will), then what is the next step for the EU.
Incresing the fines is one way. Stopping the sale of some Microsoft products would surely get their attention, but is this something that European businesses could actually handle? While I think it would be good to force businesses to look at alternatives, it would surely have a negative effect on businesses in the short term- thus hurting the EU.
If the EU were serious about this, they should spend a lot of money on improving the alternatives, to a point where they can replace Microsoft products. This I think, would definately hurt Microsoft.
Wow, it is almost as if there are different people, with different opinions and different needs and different wants. Surely this isn't possible. The world is consists of two people, me and not-me. Otherwise it makes it really difficult to understand.
The problem is that this will force people to upgrade, and Vista is a pretty huge upgrade for most people. So they will either miss out on the new games, or new games won't be able to utilise the new functionality of dx10.
And I haven't really seen anyone bitch about backporting new tech to XP - what are you talking about. How did you get modded to 5?
Once a format is out there, it is hard to let it go, and if consumers don't buy HD-DVD or BR-DVD, then stopping selling DVD's means stopping your sales. DVD was the fastest growth media format ever, faster then Tape, CD, VHS. With DVD Players costing as little as $39, they are about to saturate EVERY home that has a television set or two. Stopping DVD sales won't prompt someone to replace their $39 DVD player with one for $999 that plays only half of the movie releases out there, especially when most of the "new" releases are poorly dubbed older movies nobody cares about.
Come on, can you really get VHS anymore? I haven't seen it.
I take your point, but everyone has an interest in getting HDDVDs out there (except for the consumer). I really wish we had the choice, and could say no, but my fear is that they will stop selling DVDs sooner rather than later. I can see the two different formats working as an advantage for quick adoption - once one is declared as a winner, people will all jump on board as fast as they can - this can easily happen in the next couple of years.
A good idea for giving a phone to your kids. Only let them call the people you want them to call. ANd everynight you can inspect their necklace, to see if there are any neer'do'wells attached.
Because most of us are trying to discourage this star trek stereotype, not reinforce it.
Everytime there is a story about Mobile phones, there are the people who want a simple phone but are incapable of asking for one a phone shop, and there are the ones who want a trek communicator. Bravo.
This market being a bunch of grumpy old geeks who would rather be at home playing wow?
These designs are a competition for a Nokia Internship. You have to design something different, something that stands out. You aren't going to win by handing in a Nokia 3110. YOu creat something which makes people think about the future, and maybe fulfils one task well.
I call bullshit - you sold your nano because you wanted to use your phone? What, was the Nanao to heavy for you to carry around? Who are you kidding. It is a pain in the ass to use a phone as an mp3 player (note, i didn't say it was impossible, just not easy), and an ipod is almost the perfect mpy player are far as usability goes.
Mate, these are design students. These are models are more about making people think about the future, than future products.
They are competing for an internship at Nokia. I don't think they would get it if they hand in a Nokia 3110. It is about creating something wild, that fulfills a particular role.
If you can't find a phone that is easy to use (Motorola C117, C139) - then maybe, just maybe it is you.
How can you say that penalties are fair or satisfactory?? They aren't, and you can't with a straight face. It is one of the major problems with football that they are needed. Football sucks, there is no way around it... arguing more just proves my point, somehow. I mean, I enjoy a game every now and again, and will even watch most of the world cup, but it is not like it is a real sport. Seeya
If Microsoft was serious, they could show that they were interested in a truce by releasing important information.
They are not, this is just more Marketing speak, trying to soften Microsofts image. The unfortunate thing is that this works very well for them - the people who don't know any better, and the Microsoft community who hate OS can all hold up these sound pieces as comitement on Microsofts behalf.
What the hell does a truce mean anyway?? Do we have to stop programming?? Do they want out applications to stop fighting with theirs??
As the philosopher Yosemite Sam would often say, if you can't beat them, join them... then destroy them from the inside. (I added the last bit)
Which is why I work at Motorola, slowely destroying them from the inside - if you ever have a problem using their phones, good odds that it is something I did.
Don't you think it is strange that so many people are really happy to believe that it is a non-issue. Makes it easier for you doesn't it. If someone says something is bad, but that upsets your moral compass, you can't wait to bring up a dissenting view, somehow proving that the bad thing is not an issue.
You want to belive that it is not true. You make vague comments about the disparity of living conditons, but no actual facts - it makes it easier for you.

They way it was described, was that the program the customer used to create the content automatically included the fonts.
And that turned out to be Windows 2000, widely considered to be the least crap version of Windows ever.
Oooo, high praise indeed. No need to get all gushy.
What is the point of holding onto those fonts then? If every print job comes with its own fonts, and even similar fonts can't be used, what is the purpose for keeping rather than deleting these fonts? Seems a little crazy to me. A lot of effort, for no reward.

Oh come on. We all hate the current patent fiasco, but how does it really compare to the immediate problems they have in the developing worlds?
Have they stopped selling VHS?

Simple, they stop selling DVDs - which will eventually happen. Then, what are you going to do?
The fact is, they can't lose - The Content industry and the Tech industry need each other.
The only unknown factor is which one!
Does this have anything to do with Stephen Hawking urging us all to get into Space asap?? Coincidence, I don't think so.

What about a Bluetooth speakerphone badge?

Yes, all the benefits of a TV, with the added advantage of sitting in an uncomfortable chair, resting on a wooden desk... bring it on!
If Microsoft was serious, they could show that they were interested in a truce by releasing important information.

The GPL is like a nude beach. It's an agreement that you are no going to wear any clothes on this beach.
Microsoft wants to hang out on that beach but not remove thier clothing.
Not only will they not remove their clothes, but they walk around with a video camera all the while kicking sand in your face.
Or another way, a weekyl intake for the average American... just kidding, we all know that you are not all fatties.
Yeah, i wish he hadn't stolen that copy of Rolling Thunder - I was hoping to play it again, but since he stole the last one I won't be able to.
Can you put it back when you finished playing it?? thanks!

I just got a wave of mails in my gmail box that are from random senders, with multiple small 1-4k attachements.
Anyone have any idea if this works on/through gmail too?
Nah, that was just me, fooling with ya...sorry.
I don't think the article writer was insinuiting that all spammers are located in Boca Raton, USA.
I think in the early days of Spam, most spammers were from the USA, but I think that it is spread globally now.
On another note, what is the deal with so many internet scammers being located in Nigeria, or of Nigerian decent??
