And how many problems could have been solved by now, if instead of someone saying "Hey, this isn't doing what I wanted it to do!" instead they said "Wow, not doing what I wanted it to do, but this effect is pretty darn useful too!"

And this is exactly why there needs to be more "research for the sake of research" regardless of whether there is any potential direct commercial value from it.

First example that comes to mind of how the US gov seems to favor businesses over individuals is the part of the DMCA that makes it illegal for me to back up the DVDs that I payed for and should be able to back up under fair use!

I bugs the crap out of me that I had to work my ass off for the 640gold to buy an epic mount that looks like a rat with horns, aka Alterac Valley ram, and some punk with rl cash didn't have to work for it at all. Yeah they work for the cash they spend on the gold but it is a game and should be kept seperate from rl.

If gold farming is here to stay then as much as I dispise what paying real life currency for virtual items in a virtual world I would much prefer companies go the route of Sony Marketplace where real life currency for items is only allowed on specified servers. Hopefully then players like me won't have to deal with it as much.

it seems like programs changing your settings without consent is becoming more and more common. Yesterday Blizzard released a launcher thingy for World of Warcraft. The launcher scans for cheats and keyloggers etc and has links to the WoW website with news. The problem a lot of people have with the new WoW launcher is that reagardless of your systems settings it ALWAYS launches links in IE and if you have program access and defaults set to not allow IE it changes them.

If they were only interested in protecting themselves from lawsuit over a patent issue then they should make the patent public for everyone to use to make sure nobody gets sued over something as trivial as this.
