  1. No more money for Sony on EFF and Sony Disclose New DRM Security Hole · · Score: 4, Insightful

Great, now not only do I have to make sure all my users' applications are patched, but I have to track patches on every frigging DRM implementation out there as well.

    Well, payback is a bitch.

I have already steered a friend away from a Sony stereo to another brand, making it clear that Sony is not a good "citizen" and they would do well to stay clear of any Sony products.

Yes, I am only one puny person, but I've already cost them a couple of hundred bucks, and will continue do so at every opportunity.

Pham noted that TI provides its customer with support and some legal advice to keep things separate.

"Yes it's a complication and yes some customers have some issues with it and some questions with it," Pham said. "But in general, it hasn't been so much as an issue as it has been questions."

Not to speak for the parent, but an Americano is a shot of espresso with 6-8 oz. of steamed (hot) water added. Definitely a lot more "forgiving" cup of coffee than a straight espresso and much nicer than a dripped or pressed cup. I usually have one in the morning after my ristretto. Nice to have cup that lasts longer than it takes to make. But wouldn't you know, the first really good espresso shot that I've pulled this week happened to be for an Americano. Sigh...

  18. Fixed cost vs. variable cost on CIA Investing in Modular Green Energy · · Score: 1

No, in this case, it's not backwards. If the same number of dollars are worth less in the future, you want to spend them now. If you spend them later, you have to spend more of them to get the same effect. This is because -in the context of the investment we are discussing- your view of inflation too limited. Go back and read the post you are replying to. The rate of increase in the cost of oil has far outpaced the overall inflation rate. You have to take that into account, since that will be a significant portion of the money you are spending over the life of the system.

Remember, we are not talking about capital investments in general (your view is probably valid there), we are talking about the choice of making a 90% capital investment up front versus 40% up front with a large part of the remainder being a consumable (oil) that is increasing in cost at a much faster pace than the overall inflation rate. You have to consistantly make very smart investment decisions to beat the rate of increase in the price of oil on top of the overall inflation rate. It's a pretty good bet that demand for oil will increase and the supply will decrease as time goes on.

I made the change about 3 months ago, so I guess 30 days is a best-case scenario. Or maybe they are just exercising their "discretion". Maybe they don't believe someone who is "from" Pakistan. Who knows?

BTW, I clicked on the "why do we need this information?" link below the country, it says it is to make sure that if you sign up as under 18, that the applicable country's laws regarding minors can be applied.

  21. Re:It is a growing movement on CIA Investing in Modular Green Energy · · Score: 1

I understand the opportunity cost that you are talking about, but that's to varying degrees offset by inflation. Not just overall inflation, but also the added potential inflation of the cost of your consumables (look at the trend in oil prices, for instance).

If all of your costs are up front capital costs, those are the 'cheap' dollars (rupees, euros, whatever). Money is going to have less purchasing power as time goes by. This effect is amplified by the fact that the consumables are commodities that are prone to an increase in demand and decrease in supply.

But lo and behold, when Hotmail upped their storage to 250MB, my account stayed at 2.5MB (later upped to 25MB). Why? Because I'm not in the USA. Do you think changing my profile to USA upped the limit? Hint - the answer is not yes.

  24. Re:When.. on Music Labels Charge Too Much For Microsoft · · Score: 1

The recording artist gets paid last, only after all the expenses have been covered. If the album is a failure, the record company eats the loss and the artist ends up with zero -- but they're not in debt. In this regard it's better than a traditional bank loan -- if you borrow $50K from the bank to self-produce/promote/etc. your record and it only makes $25K, the bank will still insist on getting all $50K back, plus interest. They'll be a lot less understanding than the record label. A record label won't ruin your credit rating and repo your car if your album doesn't turn a profit.

You left out an important part of the equation. The record company gets to make the determination of how much was "spent" on expenses. Their accounting practices make the Enron CFO look like Mr. Rogers.

In terms of your analogy, the bank determines how much they "loaned" you, and you never see that money, they spend it for you.
