As the anonymous coward stated, there is a big red button for images. However, chances are your problem is that you need a good TIFF viewer that works with the USPTO setup. See Innomage Internetiff. They have a free version. Otherwise visit any one of the many sites that provide free PDFs of patents.

Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed. I'm pretty sure he was making an argument by analogy. It seemed pretty clear to me. Airbargs are a good thing. They save a lot of lives, but if used improperly (e.g., placing a child's car seat right in front of the airbag) they can be a bad thing (read: deadly).

Turning to the metadata: Having lots of metadata to search can be a very good thing. But, if used improperly (e.g., having the index not properly secured from outside access or malicious software) they can be a bad thing (read: security risk).

So, as the grandparent said: "Like Big Bird says, remember to put your infants in the back seat, so the "safety" devices don't kill them."

Well a company or a corporation can't really pull a trigger. An employee could. That employee would certainly face jail time. Presumably any co-conspirators would too. If the board of directors all voted to have the employee kill the person, they'd all be likley facing jail time for conspiracy and aiding and abetting.

As a brief reply, I don't think that the repair argument holds. How often do you repair your clock radio, how often do you repair your television? Not really that often. Just because it is electronic doesn't mean it will break. This is especially true when people aren't allowed to tinker with the software of the device. If the software behind these devices is handled well, I don't think you will have to worry about reinstalling the OS on your thermostat.

  19. Re:Double Edged Sword on Patents Chilling Effect on Science · · Score: 1
The maximum duration of a patent is now 20 years from *filing*. The only way that is extended is if the patent office takes too long examining the patent. Currently, a good average is about 3 years to get the patent from filing to issue (i.e., you get about 17 years from *issue*). I'm not aware of any way to renew this time limit.

The previous system was 17 years from *issue*, which meant that if you delayed your examination for years you could really extend the life of your patent (these delayed patents were known as submarine patents).

So, I really don't see any argument that the current system has expanded the old? It is simply a new way to calculate the term to eliminate people benefiting by purposely protracting their examination. In most cases the patent term comes out to be the same as the previous system. In addition, continuations of patents claiming priority to earlier filings are calculated from the priority date and, thus, have a term much shorter than 17 years from issue.

One last note... you mention variable speed windshield wipers. Do you have a reference regarding the early invention. The earliest I have found is reference to Kearns inventing the idea in 1962 and this patent filed in 1982 http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PT O2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=3&u=/netahtml/search-bool.html&r =148&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=ptxt&s1=kearns.INZZ.&OS=IN /kearns&RS=IN/kearns

So, its not so much that its from Dell or HP, just that they put a lot of crap on those things that has to boot up. I always recommend wiping these things clean and installing Windows fresh...solves this whole issue.
